Disabled Veteran replies to Ricky Bobby
Dude, I hope you don't ever run into any financial problems, you would see what it is like for some unfortunate people. I got deployed to Afghanistan while working on my degree. I came back with some very serious physical injuries that have left me disabled for the rest of my life. I can still work, but not to the same level I did before I deployed. The Army was supposed to pay for my student loans, to which they haven't paid a dime yet. For some of us its hard enough for us to have to make it through the mental and physical pain we go thru every day, let alone deal with jerks calling us about stuff we would pay if we could. Before I was deployed my credit was awesome at 800, but now its crap at below 600. Life sucks living like this and the temptation to end it all is very appealing some days more than others. So, until you have walked a mile in someone else's shoes you should refrain from making insensitive comments like this -- it could happen to you one day too -- but I wouldn't wish this life on anyone else, even someone I don't like.

Nice propagandist response. The student loan industry is one of biggest scams that government and corporate complex designed with the intent of turning the majority of graduates of universities into long-term debt slaves.

    simply curious replies to Greg
This is a very legit company.  They called a few of my relatives and references supplied by me when I took out my student loans.  I fell on hard times, moved around a lot didn't leave good contact info etc.  I was embarassed by my debt and was scared because I signed papers to repay this loan so I just avoided.  I finally called back because of messages left to those same family members and friends got tired of getting messages.  Simply curious and didn't want any messages left with them anymore I called.  I owe over 50k.  I was able to qualify for a very reasonable repayment option of $25.00 per month.  It's the law.  A person is only required to pay what is reasonable and affordable to them.  So if you can't pay a dime so be it , just send them the required documentation.  You can even get the discharged if disabled, false certification by the school, closed school etc.  I don't know I spent a good hour talking to the rep and got a lot of verifiable info from them just check ed.gov or other related websites. I was pleasantly surprised.

There have been bills coming to my house for a few years under a name I've never heard of (or can't even pronounce). Since it's a federal offense to open someone else's mail, I've sent them all back. Now, FMS is calling me telling me that I've never paid a cent on any of my loans. They are allegedly linked to my SS, but not my name. These loans are correct for loans I've taken out, and paid on under the correct name. What am I supposed to do to rectify this. I feel helpless.

Hey [***], maybe putting food on the table is a little more important than paying a higher than Christ student loan, or a bill from an ER because they can't afford to go to a family physician.  I am so glad that you have never been on a shoestring budget. I am glad that you feel it is okay to pass judgement behind the digital barrier. I am glad that I am not blind to our society's problems like you.

my mother received a call from this number 877-291-8405..... this is a authorized student loan collector with the dept of education. they help to lower or eliminate, consolidate your loan. this article shows the authorized agencies as listed   http://articlesforme.info/government-student-uncollectable.htm

    https://www.myeddebt.com/borrower/myoptions_collectionAgencies

if you don't have a student loan you might of been listed as contact to the person who signed the loan but they must verify your information or the persons information they are trying to get a hold of before they can proceed according to their rules... Its a legit call. I'm just passing the info i found researching . If you don't have a loan i would suggest you get ahold of the agency either by phone or mail to stop the inquiries.

abused by the government and you replies to fms worker
First the assumption is by you!!  As a sheltered kid I did not  have  nor would I have had the first inkling of what I was signing and it was not told to me I was marched in front of a school financial person over 28 years ago and told to sign it THINKING IT WAS FEDERAL AID AND NOT A LOAN I SIGNED A PAPER. When I switched schools they decided they could demand payment when actually I went to a cheaper school and no longer needed the loan money from a student loan company!     They then started harassing me while I was enrolled and they were properly informed of it and given the information that I was a full time student. Threatening phone calls, and letters  was the beginning of harassment and demands for payment.   Finally after 9 years and before the law changed I filed bankruptcy and it was discharged under hardship which I had rightfully proven. (You know what I borrowed then a total of $2,500.00.  When I filed bankruptcy on it they had already had it up to $30,000.00  they had taken $8000.00 out in taxes. The high rate was not the loan interest it was because they kept tacking on at least 2-3000.00  every time they gave it to a new collection agency.)   Then two years after it was discharged I guess someone did not get the memo  and I started getting calls again after it was discharged and again the documents from me were provided. You nor any debt collector prior can provide me with the original paper work to prove you have a case so for you and I hate to tell you their is a statute of limitations and there was a discharge in my case in 1998 filed and entered JUNE 1999 AND WAS UNDER THE GUIDELINES FOR HARDSHIP SO IF I GET PHONE CALLS THEY WILL BE DOCUMENTED, RECORDED  AND MY ATTORNEY WILL FILE AGAINST YOU ON MY BEHALF AND THEN I HOPE AND PRAY I PUT YOU OUT OF BUSINESS AND THEN PERHAPS YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO HARASS PEOPLE WHO OWN YOU NOTHING.  Seams to me you have been making your money on the blood sweat and tears of people who have hit hardship and with people who have never been able for unforeseen reasons which prevent them from having the money to pay!! I filled for hardship as I have children with medical issues and I also have a heart conditions/diabetic/ Cancer  which for several months of the year prevent me from working so if you think your doing the right thing by making a profit off of people who are in dire straights then God help your soul as the Bible said you can not serve two masters so pick which one this day you will serve!!!  I know who I serve and it is not a money thirsty American Government who cares little for those who truly work for a living and who are not on welfare.  (Oh but wait some of us should be I know I live below the poverty level only  my skin is white so I do not count in America)  Oh and you are wrong they can be dismissed in bankruptcy under hardship it is getting more and more easy to prove these days!!

Got a call from these people. First they told me that it was a job offer and wanted to get a hold of my son. I told them that I have no contact with him. Next they call me on my cell number and say that they are getting a hold of me because I have not called them back.  I am a retired railroad worker with no debts in default or no late payments in over 20 years! My retirement annuities come directly from the US Dept of Treasury. Basically I have over a million in my retirement account. I have read about FMS and visited their web site.  I feel lied to as there is no current connection between my finances and those of my son.  I did not cosign or witness anything. FMS is trying to be above the law and as such I will report them!  Be forewarned that if your last name matches someone they have business with, you will get a call.  Don't just hang up, gather information and report to your state and federal agencies!

That is an utterly biased, ignorant and spiteful response. "These people" are no longer the deadbeats of popular lore from 20 or 30 years ago. Get informed and quite dividing this complex problem into "those who step up and pay" and "deadbeats".

As much as you'd like the world to be binary, it's not.

Would like to verify what most of these folks are saying...this number belongs to an aggressive group of people who lie about their true intentions (the one time I unfortunately answered, he said he was calling to get a "reference" for my sister's job...my sister works overseas, so yeah, no) and harass indefinitely. We have no debt other than our mortgage...my husband's student loans have been paid off for years. Seriously would like to know how they got my cell phone number. The guy I talked to said his name was "Elliot Cobbs" and gave this number: 1-877-291-8405 press 1 ext 8610.

That's because it is a reference call. As in the person who took out the loan probably had to provide at least 3 references. congrats, some one trusted you enough to decide you could deal with the debt collectors while they ran and hide
