This sounds like Mark from Calahan //Quite the rude young man he is.You can tell from talking to him he is not very educated.I just spoke to the Mr Phillips at The NYSAG office..Calahan and Associates are very popular there.I recorded my phone conversation with MARK.I also filed the complanit forms and contacted an attorney here in Tenn. This guy is a uneducated, hard core unemploiable person who is getting his bell rung today.
The NYSAG has many complaintes on Mark and Calahan and Assiciates.I also mailed them (certified)a Cease Letter and well as a Debt Validation letter..I also wrote a song that includes all of my personnal info so if they use it again without permission from me .I plan to sue them for copyright infringement///DO NOT PAY ANY MONEY TO THESE CON ARTIST

I got many calls from this so called collections agency along with their threats and like many other people did not this to affect my credit report. My husband used to take most of the calls and one day I had had enough and spoke to the person myself. I mentioned how I did not appreciate their threats and did not even feel comfortable paying them anything because of their demeanor and because I didn't even know if they were a legit company. This guy "bhetzel" bragged about their companys reputation and told me I could verify with the former vendor which in our case was "thinkcash". I called "thinkcash" and they confirmed that the acc had been forwarded to callehan & associates and unfortunately I made a huge sacrifice to pay 800 in one month which this guy took directly from my bank account. Now the debt is still listed on my credit report and I have not received a paid off letter. I called them a couple of days ago and they verified that my debt had been paid off and said they would send me a letter through email but never did. I am so devastated now!!!! This is the second time fraudulent companies take advantage of my family. What can I do???

I've been receiving calls from an M Callaghan and Associates lately as well...and what's weird, is that they are LOCAL calls. I don't know how they got my number, but I've never taken out ANY sort of loan except for a student loan just recently.

From what these posts are saying, looks like a scam. Reporting to the FBI, you can too right here:

I spoke to a lawyer for M. Calahan & Associates today.  She said I owe Impact Cash  $530 but they will settle for $397.50.  I gave them my credit card information.  they are suppose to deduct it on July 22, 2011.  Is this a scam or what.

I work for a bankruptcy attorney and will have my paralegal degree soon.  So, when I say I have heard these types of stories before, I am not exaggerating.  This company has also called my cell phone.  The first thing they said is untrue.  My cell # is from a different state than where I live, and they are trying to tell me that complaints have been filed with a court in that state.  This cannot happen.  Complaints cannot be filed in a state or county where you do not live or did not live there when the debt supposedly occurred.

When trying to collect a debt, no one is allowed to obtain your Social Security number or Driver's License number without a case already having been filed in court against you, and even then it would be in writing from an attorney's office, called an interogatory.

I believe this company to be a scam.  If you are able to speak to anyone there, call their bluff.  Tell them that you intend to file bankruptcy.  Ask them for their mailing address so that you can send them notice.  I would be willing to bet they hang up or try to tell you that the debt cannot be discharged in bankruptcy.  While there are a few types of debt that cannot be discharged in bankruptcy, they are along the lines of certain tax debt, student loans, alimony and child support.

    Please be aware that:

    1) No collection agency has the ability to suspend your driver's license, "report you to the DMV" or anything else.  Threatening to do so is illegal, and you can sue them in small claims court for each violation under the Fair Debt Collection Act -- $1,000 per violation.  Be sure to note the time of the call and the threat, and then file a suit in your local small claims court, naming them as the violators, with each violation.

    2) No collection agency has the ability to "have you arrested for fraud" for failing to pay a debt (or an alleged debt).  Stating this is also illegal and a violation of the Fair Debt Collection Act -- $1,000 per violation.

    3) No collection agency may harass your family, neighbors, or employers.  Violation of this law with intent is a violation of several laws, including the FDCA and the Telephone Consumer Protection Act.  You can sue in small claims court for each violation, as can your families, friends and other individuals harassed by the unethical collection agent.

It sounds like this company, in particular, is playing nasty and using people's lack of knowledge about the system to violate their rights.  Don't take it.  Get educated on the law, haul them into court, allow them to explain their thuggish and illegal behavior to the judge, and then pocket thousands of dollars in judgments that they'll be ordered to pay.  It's the only way to stop their illegal behavior.

I have read some of the complaints associated with M. Callahan & Associates.  I find it very hard to believe that a debt collector is allowed to collect debts using such tactics and unfair practices.  Are these real experiences?  Unbelieveable!!!  Has anyone dealt with this debt collector by involving Federal Trade Commission's Fair Debt Collection Practices Act?

At any rate, I also got the call from M. Callahan & Assoc.  The message that was left on my phone appeared as though someone else or I could have been involved in an illegal, fraudulent act.  Scared the living daylight out of me. They even went as far as to mention FBI, Affidavit, contact an attorney, kind of crap.   I must admit that kind of message will get you to return their call at least.  When I finally got around to returning the call, the person made it seem as though I needed an attorney for this matter.  The more we talked, the more I realized this is a debt collector.  They never identified themselves as debt collectors.  First mistake.   I asked the person if she was a debt collector.  The person said, "No." Second mistake.   I just went online to find out more about M. Callahan & Associates and "What do you know?" They are just that - debt collectors.  I would recommend to any debtor to become familiar with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act -- IT WORKS!

God is so good.. I prayed about wondered about M. MCallahan and Associates. They are rude nasty, ignorant and dirty. They called me using a fake (court) case #, like CV??? trying to scare me. I went to school for Paralegal and I have reasearched this company high and low. I have read a lot of ugly things about theses SCAMMERS..They wanted me to send $400.00 and the rest in two weeks...lol..I was too smart for that.

God gave me wisdom on what to do and I spoke to a gentleman at a debt consolidation company and he emailed me two letters to work with any company to pay them off myself. (the letters helps avoid late fees and extra charge).

You can also sent letters to the credit beureau to get things deleted from your credit report.
