    See last statement.

Placing one's number on the National Do Not Call Registry will stop most, but not all, unsolicited calls. The following are exceptions granted by existing laws and regulations - and these types of organizations can register with donotcall.gov and can purchase telephone lists from the Do Not Call Registry [6]

--The registry only applies to residential lines, not to business lines
--A person may still receive calls from political organizations.
--The organization Citizens for Civil Discourse has lobbied Congress to close this exception by developing a National Political Do Not Call Registry where voters can register their phone numbers and ask politicians to take the "Do Not Contact Pledge". Its database is not backed by the force of law and as of November 2008, only 3 politicians running for office signed the pledge.[8]
--A person may still receive calls from not-for-profit organizations.[9]
--A person may still receive calls from those conducting surveys.
--A person may still receive calls from companies with which he or she has an existing business relationship for up to 18 months after his or her last purchase, payment, or delivery from it, unless person specifically asks the company not to call again.
--A person may still receive calls from a company up to 31 days[10] after submitting an application or inquiry to that company, unless the company is specifically asked not to call.
--A person may still receive calls from bill collectors (either primary creditors or collection agencies). These callers are, however, regulated by other laws, such as those limiting them to calling during "reasonable hours." Some creditors may not call debtors who file for bankruptcy protection.

These people called my cell today and left a blank voice mail.  When I called the number back the lady asked why I was calling them!  Then she transfered me to a "William James" who asked why I was calling him!  When I stated that they called me he asked for a woman i never heard of.  When I asked what company he was with he asked my name.  I told him that if they were a legitimate company they would have my name when they called.  I again asked for the company.  He asked me why I called them and would not give my name!  I was pretty pissed by this time.  I told him he was calling a number on the do not call registry and refusing to state who they were.  He replied that he told me, he was "William James."  I told him that was meaningless, and to give me the name of the company, and the reason for the call.  He finally told me Client Services, and repeated that they were trying to contact the woman.  I told him I had never heard of her and not to call again.  He said "You have just a wonderful day," in the most sarcastic, angry tone.
Where to they find these people?  There must be some recourse for these harrasing calls.

Debt collectors are most certainly NOT allowed to call your neighbors. They are not allowed to advertise your debt or shame you in any way. If they call the number that they have on file, they are allowed to say certain things (like "business matter"), and leave a message. They are certainly not allowed to harass you, and calling your neighbors is harassment.

I deal with collections at our company, and if you lose the phone number, you do a 'skip trace'. The purpose of the phone call is to avoid a court hearing, but even if it goes that far, they MUST serve you in person, so they must have a valid address. If you move and they can't find you, they are SOL.

I've heard of a lot of things in collections, but I've never heard of someone actually doing this.

I Got The Same Call For My Stepmother In Colorado I Told Them I Had Not Spoken To Her In 15 Years. They Told Me She Listed Ny Number As A Reference, I Said That's A Lie Because My Number Is Unlisted And I Only had This Number For A yeaR And Its Impossible For Her To List This Number.I Told Them If They Called Again I Would Press Charges Then Ten Minutes Later They Called My Cell Phone Unbelievable Right. This Is Collection AgencyS New Form Of Collecting There Money By  Calling Someone You Know To Belittle You In To Paying. Then Two Days Later I Get A Call From Rent A Center For Another Friend That Put MY Number For A Reference. They Call The Person And They Dont Answer Then They Decide To Harass The Referance Into Calling They Friend This Is The Lowest Form Of Collecting And Should Be Againt The law.

Who cares what my name is replies to Please Remove My Phone Number...
It is US law that a debt collector CAN NOT contact any one but you for a debt. If they are calling neighbors they have to first state WHO they are, WHY they are calling and by doing so they are disclosing YOUR DEBT info.

If a neighbor is contacted, have them provide something in writing and file a complaint with the FCC and if you can file a law suit against the zombie debt collection agency.

Google Fair Debt Collection... The United States code bars any collection agencies from further contact if you tell them verbally and in writing. If you do it in writing sent certified and with a return receipt(meaning someone signed for it) any further contact can result in them having to pay you $1000.00 per call, attorney's fees, etc. Good info.

This number call my cell phone and my home phone but did not leave message.
The Today show had on a scam where bogus people would call you and when they did not
leave a message, when you call them back you get charged $100-200 to your phone bill by calling
this number back. So I recommend to all that you don't call back numbers that you don't
know or that is not in area codes you are used to.

Relative of mine was left a voicemail wanting to know the" whereabouts of  (my name).."....Acting like they were in search of me. They left this number but no name. Message came across like they were in search of a criminal or someone who broken the law....with their authoritative voice. Whom ever it is is harassing my relative. If they do it again I will report them to police and may file charges against them.
