Cheque overpayment scam - requests a big-ticket purchase sight unseen from the UAE, gets your payment details and then "mistakenly" sends a forged cheque for a vastly greater amount and asks you to refund the difference.

This is the mail we got:

Dear Dott,

Please Urgent.

Am sorry for my late response due to my official trip to Beijing,China.

Please kindly take this as an urgent issue and needed a clarification and solution as soon as possible in respect of the payment in the sum of €89,800.00 as been carelessly remitted to your company by our accounting department instead of the €39,875.00 quoted on the proforma invoice of our recent order from your company.

However,kindly look into this matter and confirm the exact amount received to enable us settle the differences and proceed with the shipment of our order.

Kindly sorry for the inconveniences this might cost you and looking forward to do long term business relations with your reputable firm.

HI Nigel, I got this same message too via email too last night.

They basically went through photographers on PHOTOSHELTER.com and decided to spam us.

I even sent over a quotation and the fool asked about how to pay. I sent another invoice with payment details and decided to call the venue as a sense of precaution. The venue didn't have any details of such a booking and I pushed the fool further to provide website details (as most companies have details anycase).

He replied back to say website was under construction. I then told him I had called the venue and no dates were in - he came up with another bogus story.

I have also traced his IP address and it originates from the USA in Seattle. that might be a fraud too as anyone can send an email using an IP mask. I sent him a stinker and told him I knew what he was up to and his spamming strategy.

Please do not bother responding if you get any messages such as this. Such a fraudulent fool.

Thank heavens I followed my hunch and intuition.

Yep, I was asked to quote for photography with a budget of less than £7,000 (I wish!)
Phoned the venue given, The Grand Pier, Weston-Super-Mare and they had taken a booking, but for 4 days after the dates I'd been given!

They said they'd had a few photographers call up but were still looking into it. So I did my own research and came up with this site. I've phoned up Rachel at the venue and told her it's a scam.

Today same message than Femi but for France... Glad having checked and found  this page !

I also received the Abdul Al Jabal message from Photoshelter.  Total scam.  I looked up the Bellezza banquet hall; they just took some photos from the real one in North Hollywood.  I quoted $21000 fee, which Mr.Abdul Al Jabal promptly accepted and he wrote back about payment options.  I told him that 50% of the contract amount was due 30 days prior to the event wired directly to my bank account, non-refundable, with the balance due at completion of the project.  Haven't heard back :)

Did you really get any money?

essentailly all of the above, 60 people 4 days, 30 images, etc.  I asked the address fo the meeting, google map shows it is the southern suburbs of Paris, the street view, a little ugly house - definitely the place for a mideastern trade compùlany board meeting

As a Photoshelter user I got the same message. Sent a estimate, received a signed estimate in return; when I asked for a Deposit up front and the name of the Company that referred me-I began to get suspicious. Checked the street address of the venue, a little apt. in West Hollwood. It's a scam be aware. If it too good to be true, it probally is!!!
