Had a call this a.m. on my landline. Left an automated message on answerphone claiming I hadn't applied for my free central heating boiler. Same caller phoned a bit later from 01252670999 telling me to press 2 to take advantage of offer. Same message. Obviously a scam.

Got a call from  0044 786325689. Woman asking for company information. Didn't catch her presentation of her company, but obvious fraud attemt. Tried to have some fun with hef, then hung up. Called foreign info service, untraceable cell phone...

just got a call from 00448009961966, not being of the British 11 numbers did not answer, have call blocker
and have international calls blocked but this one got through. BT have a lot to answer allowing this type of
infringement occuring in the first place

Basically, 0044 is the International Dialling Code for the UK.  However, this thread seems to consist of various numbers with the prefix 0044.  All of them seem to be relating to assorted scams, so it is fairly certain that the whole thing is a fake.  The particular scam involved with your call is called the "Nigerian 419" scam, which is a worldwide identity and money theft scam run by a criminal gang.  The "Nigerian 419" name related to the Crininal Code number for Fraud in Nigeria which is where most of these calls originate.  They use famous names like Apple, Nokia, Coca Cola and, just to be up to date in your case, The World Cup.  However, the scam is always the same, saying you have won a raffle or a lottery.  If you respond to the SMS they will ask for lots of personal information, including a copy of your passport, which can be used for criminal activities and terrorism. They will also ask for various amounts of moneymfor tax, courier costs, bank costs or any other lies they can think of.  There is, of course, no prize.  Google has more information on this scam and there is a warning about it on the Apple website.

Hi! I'm from Germany and I have had the same today. We want to sell a house via internet and we get a call from the number 0044 7466910565. Mr. Dimitris want to buy the house with no dicussion about the price. Only the form of paying should be discussed. For a meeting I should travel to London or Birmingham to meet us. If we will not sign the contract he will pay my costs. One week before we have a call from the same person with a telephone number from Switzerland. One day later I want to call back this number and it was cancelled. During my call he tells me that he and his group is not interessted to buy it for himself. They will buy it only to rent it and we could stay in our house until we have the new habitation. So I think this could be a "RIP-DEAL" and he and his group could be defrauder which want to handle only a barter with foreign currencies.

Just the four numbers 0044, nothing else, didn't answer and no message left. Put the number in the call blocker, whoever it is, I don't want anything from them and they won't be bothering me again. Idiots.

Received a call from 0044 saying I had been involved in a car accident recently, when I told the man I hadn't he then went onto say he meant in the last three years.  When I said I hadn't he said he had received the information from "road traffic accident" and quoted my address.  I told him he was mistaken, and asked where he had got my number from, then he hung up.

I just got a call on my house phone from unknown number 0044-7021805005 and whoever it was rang off before I could answer.
