Called my mum who is in her 70's 3 times in 1 day claiming to be from Waitrose and saying with her reward points she'd won a holiday. Just press '9' to confirm it. Thankfully she didn't.

Funny thing is 1471 gives the above phone number because numbers beginning with '999' are not allocated, they are reserved for emergency services. Not sure how they fool BT into thinking that was the Calling ID.

Following my post on 14-Nov I contacted Waitrose - their response is pasted below. Caller is spoofing the number because 999999 is never allocated - anyone trying to call it locally will go through to Emergency Services after first 3 9's.

    ------------------------
    E-Mail from Waitrose
    ------------------------
There are a number of telephone scams currently in operation with the criminals trying to obtain credit card details or to get you to connect to a premium rate number.

The callers claim that they are either ringing on behalf of Waitrose or from the 'Waitrose Rewards department', (there is no such department).

The ones we are currently aware of are calls to say:

    1. You have been awarded either a prize or a holiday in a competition being run in conjunction with Waitrose. You are then asked to provide credit card details to claim the prize.

    2. There is a problem with your order, please press 1 for more information.

    3. Friends or family have entered you in a Waitrose competition to win a holiday. Congratulations on your win, please press 1 for more information.

With the last two, pressing 1 connects you to a foreign premium rate number at £50 per minute.

Should you receive calls such as these or other variations, no matter how plausible they may seem, under no circumstances should you give out your details or press 1, simply hang up.

If you have inadvertently given your details you should report this to your local police as soon as possible.

Rest assured that if Waitrose were involved in a competition of this type, we would never ask for bank or credit card details or ask you to press buttons on the phone for more information.

    Regards,

    Waitrose Customer Service.

Got home from work today and there was a voice mail and missed call from this telephone number. The message didn't say anything though - just background noise like an office. When I tried returning the call got the 'wrong number' message.

Had this number twice on 18/11 at 7.51pm then 7.52pm.  Thankfully didn't answer it.  Ruddy nuisance when you're supposed to be ex-dir. and have TPS.

They were spamming a whole load of numbers then - I got called around that time and I'm x-dir too and also have TPS. I didn't recognise the number so didn't answer either.

They keep phoning me. I have caller display and just don't answer if I don't recognise the number. I am also TPS registered. When they hear the answering machine, they just hang up. On one call, while the answering machine was playing it's outgoing message, I could hear a lady on the other end of the line and it sounded as though she had a baby with her as she was making the calls.

What gets me is that they just keep trying. Surely you realise after about 20 attempts that their call is not going to be answered.

I received a call on Friday 5th December 2008 from 01789999999. The caller offered a cheap holiday in Florida and asked me to press 9 which I did. I now understand that this call may cost me a lot of money and I'm contacting my phone company.
