This is quite clearly a scam.  No professional company would cold call people asking for account card details.  They could easily send the paperwork to your address without verification.

I don't for one second believe the 'happy customer' comments on here!  Especially the one above with the poor grammar and spelling!  The way the number is typed is exactly the same way one of the UPI callers read back my home number - without the Zero!

Got a call from UPI just now...from Chris Parker...very heavy asian accent! Same pitch as a lot of the other comments here. The caller ID came up as International but 'Chris' assured me he was working in an air-conditioned cabin in Neath...I asked him what the weather was like in South Wales today but he claimed his cabin didn't have any windows.  He had my name and address but not my Bank name. He wanted me to tell him my Bank name so he could send me the correct form. When I explained that I have 5 bank accounts (well...2 can play at this game) he told me that I could only claim for 1 bank account. I hate this kind of abuse...makes me so cross. I will be reporting the call to my bank, trading standards, neighbourhood watch, anyone who will listen. My sympathy to all of you out there.

Rene Jones (Asian/Indian accent) has called me 3 or 4 times over the last few days, wanting to help me re-claim my last 6yrs bank charges, very much like all the other comments I've just read, I said I needed time to 'look into it further' and I said I would call back when and if I was reassured and she urged me to check out the .gov site and check out the license number (or whatever) CRM7863 that she'd previously given me, she said her employer code was 103435, that 01792 813115 was there customer services dept, she gave their ad as Sth Wales, got me to look at their web page etc and when she rang back before I'd had a chance to look at anything independently (or ring her back) and she urged me to check out the government web page using the code above, and I said 'No, I don't want to check it out using a site you are recommending, I'm going to Google it' and she said 'no, no, no, don't that, just to go straight to what-ever from your internet explorer' + I am very ashamed to say that eventually, I realised I had given them all my details (spread about, seperately, inbetween lots of jargon) and so I rang up my bank and cancelled my card IMMEDIATELY after I'd put the phone down, I then rang West Yorkshire Police who told me it was a legitimate company, and so I asked if that meant they were simply 'registered' or whether it meant they were trustworthy, only he'd put the phone down already, it's really upset me, I'm just relieved I had enough brain cells operating to at least cancel my card, as for the past two days, with my mind on other things, clearly I wasn't using my brains at all - Rene, and her supervisor(also with older English name but sounding Asian) where pushy, manipulative and agressive in their long, well rehearsed, un-interruptable pitch, lots of jargon and everything everybody else has already stated, I feel quite violated to be honest!!!  Please, anyone considering this seriously, check it out, I'm sure the C.A.B would be a much safer line of enquiry. I emailed TPS about this number as I am registered with them.  They recommend that they make a complaint using the form on their website.

    http://complaints.tpsonline.org.uk/Consumer/Default.aspx

What gets me is that this information will be passed onto this company to be dealt with.  There is no way I am indirectly supplying my information this lot.  There is a terrible contradiction with this and the instructions various agencies say about 'not' giving out personal information.

So however much I want to complain to them about this number, I will not be doing so as I feel it will add more fuel to the flames!

So who on earth can help the many 1000's of people who get these calls daily?

    I also recommend listening to:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00kcrg4/You_and_Yours_20_05_2009/

Very interesting bit about phising, vishing and SMiShing

    Stay alert people

    peace.

The company had called me a while back, they had told me I can get back £575.19 (roughly) from the charges from my bank and all sorts from over the years which has accumulated. The guy on the phone started telling me he had all this details anyway and just needed to confirm, so he told me the details such as my name, address including post code, my banks' details, sort code, etc etc. But I noticed when he gave my name, he didnt give me full name thats registered with the bank, he only gave me my name as Zack (should be Zackuariach) and then my surname, I only use Zack as my name online, and with friends etc, never when registering to something official like bank for example. I didnt tell him that he didnt get it right, he proceeded to ask me to confirm my 16 digit debit card number
which then started not to make sense if he already had this info!
But he insisted, he just needed me to confirm it. He tried to reassure me by telling me the first few and last few numbers in the card. I got my card then asked him, ok then if u already got my card details, wahts the 7th number on the card? to which he said a 9 and was  wrong so i told him so, and then he said
"its obvious you dont want to claim your money back, so I will cancel your claim, bye"

Listen up folks, here's what you need to know.

This is a serious fraud operation being targeted at the elderly and I've been investigating it for the last few weeks.

The guy running it is called Keith Penhalagan, although he has nominated his wife Julie Penhalagan as director of UPI (UK) Limited. Keith and Julie Penhalagan live at 33 Burrows Road, Skewen, Neath, West Glamorgan SA10 6AE. (Important legal note - the public are 100% fully entitled to know their names and home address - this information belongs in the public domain and is available on the Companies House website. In fact it is actually a legal REQUIREMENT that the public knows their home address!). So, if your elderly relative has been a victim of theft by UPI (UK) Limited, feel free to go round to the Penhalagans' house and ask for your money back - you won't be breaking any laws by doing so. Or alternatively report them to South Wales Police by e-mail at NeathPortTalbot@south-wales.pnn.police.uk

    Target of UPI
To contradict what 'BRIAN' claimed (in capitals), this company is alive and kicking, and calling people and giving out 01792813115 as their 'helpline' number (though 1471 just gives me "number is not available"). They claimed to know I had been overcharged by my bank, but wouldn't tell me which bank that was - they said I had to 'confirm' it to them. The only details they had about me were the normal phone book stuff. I didn't give them any more details than that; eventually (over 2 calls they made) they admitted they would charge me £49.99, but claimed that would only happen once I'd got money from the bank, and that they would be doing all the work on my behalf. Somehow I doubt that. Anyway, their sales push continues.

I am unsure about all of this.
    This is what I know.

They will know the first two digits of your sort code if they know what bank you are with, i.e - hsbc is always 40/../..
I know this from being a charity fundraiser and taking peoples details door to door.

They can get your address from your home phone number (like when you call for a pizza).

Companies can sell certain details to other companies (your interests/hobbies via previous purchases and inquiries into services) they just sell huge lists of names and numbers to a certain company selling that said product i.e - homeowners on busy roads get double glazing calls.
So if you have inquired about finacial services in any way to anyone, thats how they get your details.

    Now
The question isn't how they got everyones details, I'ts what they do with them afterwards thats the problem
We need to find someone who's actualy been scammed by them to tell us what happened.

As for thier services they don't seem to be offering anything you can't sort out yourself, they seem to be selling knowhow for fifty quid.
Their pitch is legal I just wonder whats going on behind the scenes

In an unconnected matter, I received a call yesterday from another 'Asian' sounding caller asking about whether I wanted to stop receiving 'telemarketing' calls.

All I had to do was answer a questionnaire that would last 2 minutes.  He wanted me to confirm my name, address and phone number (info free available from the phone directory).  I said I wasnt interested.

He did repeat my home number back to me, without the 0 at he beginning, just like this mob have done.

It was called the BRITISH LIFESTYLE SURVEY

    Stay alert people

    peace.

I had a call off a "Chris" who had an asian accent and a time delay (suspect overseas call centre) who said it was my lucky day as I could reclaim bank charges for the last 6 years.
After confirming my address to send a information pack to, he then said it was vital in order to claim my charges to have the exact way my name was writen on my bank card. By now I had looked up the company on the net so there was no way I was giving him anything more. Upon saying that my card was at home, he said I could go and get it now while he waited. I pointed out that would be a 2 hour round trip so he demanded (not asked) what my home telephone number was so he could call me the moment I got home. He got cut off.
Their blurb is carefully spread out so they can extract info from you bit by bit, as I am sure they would get all your bank account/card details in a roundabout way eventually, especially as the more info you give them, the more they can look up in advance as proof that they already have your details and are just looking for confirmation.
Considering there is lots of FREE advice on the net on how to reclaim bank charges, it is pointless letting any cold calling company try and "help" you.

I was contacted by a UPI representative today, didn't catch the name, Indian accent. I gave no details, but informed the woman that I was registered with the TPS and that the company was breaking the law by contacting me. She didn't know what I was talking about, natch. Have reported the incident to the TPS.

I was really stupid and taken in by them, but after a sleepless night, have rung the bank and ordered a new card. I hope something is done soon because their aggressive manner is very disconcerting to someone like me, living on their own.
