- Pedantic Jobsworth| 3 replieshi all,
i was mis-called by this number a few times on my mobile (thankfully not harrassed like many people here) i called back the first time and had an answer machine tell me it was homeserve, and that they would call back. when i actually managed to answer the phone, a man told me he was from santander, mentioned something about a mortgage and asked me to confirm my address for security. as we've had some dealings with santander lately, i genuinely thought it was santander and confirmed my address (i wasn't too bothered as anyone can get hold of your address if they want to). as i was at work at the time and i asked him to call back later.
after i'd put the phone down, i thought it was a bit odd for santander to call me and start asking me to confirm my details, so i checked the number online and saw this thread saying the number is for 'homeserve'. i called santander and asked them if they had any dealings with this company and why they'd have said they were santander. the guy i spoke to hadn't heard of homeserve and said that santander wouldn't have given any details about me to third party companies.
the next day i received another call from homeserve, again saying they were santander. i asked him if he was 'really' from santander or a company called homeserve, he said "oh... well... we are homeserve but we administer policies on behalf of santander"..... i promply hung up.
so i went onto homeserve's website and wrote to them via their complaints 'contact us' page. i also found the email address online for richard harpin, their CEO and copied my email to him and santander complaints department, asking what was going on, why homeserve were pretending to be santander, how they'd got my number (i won't bother posting it here as this post is getting too long as it is, sorry!)
anyway, homeserve wrote back saying they would investigate the matter, as did santander. so far i've received a phone call and a letter from homeserve saying they are doing a thorough investigation and they confirmed that they'd found the recording of one of their salesmen saying they were from santander in his telephone call to me. i'm still waiting for an official written reply from both homeserve and santander.
in the meantime (like, today) i've found that homeserve are actually listed within santander's list of 'useful numbers' as the home maintenance cover helpline, so it seems they are actually linked to santander in some capacity. but in any case, it is still surely illegal of them to ring me on a cold call pretending to be from my bank!
LET'S TAKE ACTION!!! anyone who gets annoyed by homeserve in any capacity, especially this goddamn phone number, please write and complain to:
richard.harpin@homeserve.com
and copy in complaints@santander.co.uk if anyone from this number claims to be calling from santander. let's spam the living daylights out of this underhanded company!!!!- Caller: Homeserve

- New Duke replies to Pedantic Jobsworth| 2 repliesGood job Pedantic! Santander should be ashamed to be in league with these cowboys. I'll be sending that email too, Homeserve won't stop harrassing me and none of the official bodies seem to give a toss.
- mainsailThis pest called and hung up 16th Nov 2010 at 15:10. I expect the caller is chuffed looking at this log of complaints. Really, the public ought to be given access by BT to identify and isolate nuisance callers.

- Pedantic Jobsworth replies to New Dukeduke,
if you have requested that they stop calling you and remove your phone number from their database, then they are obliged to do so under DPA.
definately send them an email and copy in the CEO, i'll actually post a copy of the email i sent them here as it might be useful to people. - Pedantic Jobsworth replies to New DukeCOPY OF LETTER SENT TO HOMESERVE COMPLAINTS DEPARTMENT VIA THEIR WEBSITE, ALSO SENT A COPY TO RICHARD HALPIN (HOMESERVE CEO) AND SANTANDER COMPLAINTS DEPARTMENT.
Dear Homeserve.
I have recently received a number of phone calls from your company. The first couple of times I didn't answer as I was at work and a message was left in my voicemail (which was blank, although this still cost me money to retrieve.)
Then yesterday I received another call from you and this time I managed to answer.
What I now understand to be one of your salesman, cold calling to sell me some kind of home maintenance cover (for which I have requested NO quote or call) asked to speak to Mr Joyce (myself) and said he was from Santander and that it was something to do with our mortgage and could I confirm my address.
I did so, believing he was in fact from Santander, but told him that I was at work and could he call me back after work. He said he would call back at 6pm last night (but did not.)
In the meantime, I started to wonder why Santander would call me asking me to confirm personal details when I have no assurance that the person asking is who they say they are; something I know banks are always telling customers to be very careful of. So I checked the number (01922 420 057) online and find that many people have had repetitive calls from this number from a company called Homeserve.
I called Santander to ask what affiliation they have with your company and why they might be calling me and, more importantly, why they would be claiming to be Santander.
Santander advised me that they have no affiliation with your company, that they would not have passed any of my details to you and that, as far as they are concerned, your salesman was pretend to be calling from Santander in order to sell home maintenance insurance policies.
Having originally requested a call back from your salesman after work only to not receive one, I wasn’t surprised when another salesman called today (while I’m at work again) around 11am. Again, he specifically said he was from Santander. Before he continued, I asked him if he was ‘really’ from Santander or from a company called Homeserve. He then confirmed he was indeed from Homeserve and not from Santander, but that Homeserve administer policies on behalf of Santander. I told him I have no interest in dealing with a company with such ‘sales’ practices and promptly hung up.
Given the above, could you please answer the following questions:
1. Why would both of your sales persons claim to be from Santander when they are not?
2. Why would he ask me to confirm personal details when, firstly, such details are utterly irrelevant to the nature of the call (cold calling sales) but to obtain personal details from someone while pretending to be from another company surely contravenes the Data Protection Act?
3. Where did you obtain my name and phone number in the first place? (not a rhetorical question – I would like specific details please, which I am entitled to as part of the DPA, seeing as you hold personal data about me).
4. Why do you use this underhanded cold selling practice? Do type the above phone number into an online search engine and you’ll find many complaints about this.
5. Please confirm you will remove my name, number, address (which I regret being silly enough to give you) and ANY other details about me from your database immediately and assure me you will NOT attempt to contact me again (other than to reply to this correspondence, obviously.)
I await your reply and hope I don’t have to take alternative action regarding this issue. - rieriej replies to Iain| 1 replyyep im fed up of this company keep calling me now! 3/4 times a day its happening!
- vicki replies to rieriejhi found these postings as i don't answer calls that don't belong to persons in my address book. they called me first at 5.27pm this evening, when i didn't answer they phoned straight back i still didn't answer. don't think i'll be answering in the future. but is homeserve the same ones who supply insurance for pipes with united utilites?

- Pedantic JobsworthTo update you all following my last posts, I have now received an official response from Homeserve, bascially skirting round the issues of this telephone number and also trying to dodge the issue that they pretend to be Santander. I'm having none of that! I've written a response pointing out why their answers are unacceptable and have demanded their proposals for remedial actions, otherwise I'll make a formal complaint to the Information Commissioner's Office and the FSA.
They have, however, asured me that my number and all personal details have been removed from their database and automated dialling system.
Please make sure you write and complain if you're receiving either multiple daily calls from this number or they claim to be from your bank / utilities company etc - it's the only way to stop them doing this.
Will update again when I hear back from them.- Caller: Homeserve
