    Karen-
    Had 4 or 5 silent calls from this company, when I rang and asked them to remove our number from their system I was advised it could take up to 6 weeks!

    Sounds like Homeserve.  We are pestered with frequent calls using the name of Anglia Water because we took out drainage insurance from them and found itr was Home Ser5ve when the docs. arrived.  Constantly phoning me to upgrade to a plumbing insurance in spite of my saying I was not interested

    Actually yes, "me", from your previous ramblings I did think you would be so stupid.

    As for Homeserve's large number of policies, the great majority of them are not initially sold under their own name.    The first someone knows they are involved is when paperwork arrives ( such as described by JP above ) or on expiry of a guarantee when they come whining for an extension.

    If you don't work for Homeserve, don't you have better things to do with yourself than defend them?

    Hope not, as we are having such fun winding you up.

    Keep getting this number calling 2 or 3 times a day. We are ex dir and have the call filtering option as we were having too many calls re kitchens or double glazing months ago.
    They say that they were given our details via Severn Trent water and want to give us 3 months drain cover for £1.
    Not interested but they keep on ringing !!!!

    Ron asked you to take over. Brian, this is not a court proceeding for you to monitor for him. Is he scared of what he is missing and what legal websites he could be posting. I am now wondering if you actually know anything at all or if you just call Ron to ask him what you should write. I notice you are starting to get ore aggresive now that you realise what i am saying is correct. I am still wondering why you fail to answer my post about it says on ofcoms website about a company who does make silent calls. Read my post again, check their website ( which you are so quick to point out to people) and then tell me that what i said was wrong.
    And i would now like to tell you of an example i of what isaid ofcom or the data commisioner would do in the first instance. At my work today i received a letter from a solicitor advising tat their client was unhappy with some offers we had sent through the post and could we remove them from the mailling. So that is exactly what i have been saying allalong. And highlander, why are you winding me up.It seems the other way around as you are the one who keeps returning to to tell me "you are wrong boo hoo".
    As you have stated some people may not be aware it is Homeserve they are with. So again it goes back to my point of saying you may be a customer and not know it. You should all read any warrabty or anything you receive from your water board.

    Highlander you claim that you reported Homeserve to the data commisioner. Care to enlighten us all what they did and what the outcome of that was. Tell us all exactly how the data commisioner got in touch with homeserve and what they said to them.

    For the attention of "me",

    I spoke to my brother Ron earlier, he says that he is watching all the action in the on-board Internet Cafe. He said that me and Highlander are winning this arguement hands down. He also reckons that you are a bit thick which would explain why you are only an office junior in some crappy insurance company.

    For all the other posters in this thread, please don't pay any antention to [***], you'll find lots of good genuine advice here:-

    If it is Homeserve, that makes sense. I used them in the past but dumped them. The write regularly, and get a "Go Away" message back in their envelope. They offer home emergency insurance to water company customers, and try to look as if they are the water company. The cover is not cheap, and has lots of exclusions. When they got through, they asked for the wrong initial with the right surname. The wife told them no-one of that name lives here, so maybe they will give up.

    the truth will set you free. Brian lets get some true facts down here now. You and your brother are obviously very sad and pathetic. If i was on a cruise in the Carribean i would not be concerned with this forum. Your brother is obviously a very lonely man. Oh well. And i would like you to tell me one post where highlander has provided any info or advice rather than just slagging other people off. At least you do provide advice that you feel may help people and are attempting to provide them with help.  And you have obviousley realised you are losing as you now resort to my job of a thick office junior. Thatis the sort of thing that used to happen in the playground when you realised you had lost something. As i said, sad and pathetic.
    Lets get back to the point. You have relaised i am right as you have failled on a number of times to answer my questions to you. Obviously i am no the one who is thick as you cannot take i info first time round.
    I asked your brother the outcome of his email to the "Top Man" and if a personnal reply was received from him. Your failure to confimr this suggetss i was right with my comment. I have asked you to tell everybody ( as you seem to believe they listen to you) what ofcom say about the procedure a company should follow in regardto silent calls. Let me remind you, the number has to be traceable to call back and a short recorded message should available to the caller when they call that number back. From previous posts this is obviously the procedure Homeserve are following so i fail to see how by ofcoms advice they are acting illegally. If you knew that you were right then you would not have to slag me off.If you were right then you would have enough info to post without resorting to this means. Oh well. Some people are like that.
    I would like you to give me a simple honest answer ( if you are man enough) to the 2 questions i have asked above ( again). You seem to like avoiding the questions where an answer would be an admittance of me being correct>Why is this so hard for you. You post all this about Ofcom but seem to hav mssed that bit. Maybe you only see what you want to and interpret things the way you want to. Taht is not really a good way to post advise for people. Parhaps you are afraid that your addmitance of being wrong will mean people will not listen to you antmore.

    Brian,
    The previous poster called "me" has now asked for some information on the law regarding silent calls. This therefore, is a small extract from the excellent Ofcom website .....

    "Sections 128-130 of the Communications Act 2003 give Ofcom power to take action against persistent misuse of electronic communications networks or services, including silent and abandoned calls."

    A lot more information can be found by clicking here ..... http://www.ofcom.org.uk/media/news/2006/03/nr_20060301

    FAO Ron,
    Good to talk to you earlier mate - have a great cruise and watch out for those hurricanes !

    Brian yet again you fail. You really do have a problem as you fail to cofirm what i asked you. I did not ask you for information i asked you to confirm if what i said about the procedures on ofcoms website is correct for what homeserve are following.You also fail to answer the question about the email to the top man. Agai you avoid these as an answer would contradict everything you have said so far. You are a waste. I just dont understand how it is so difficult for you to do this simple task. Maybe i am no the one who is a bit thick. If you will not answer then i would like you to tell us all why. You are quick to post info of what to do and what your brother hasdone but fail to inform people what the outcome was so that they may know what will happen if they take that approach. Oh weell. Lets see if you will finally give an answer next time you post. Probably not but then it will just confirm how stupid you really are. If you were a man then you would at leats have the guts to admit that th info i posted about ofcoms procedures for silent calls is correct. Maybe brian is short for brianna?

    Brian i will post the info i am refering to below as you do not seem able to read he english language. Strangely this is from the exact site you refer people to in your last post. Rad it and tell me which of those key requirements Homeserve are breaking. I think you will be surprised D******d.

    The new rules include three key requirements:

    Abandoned call rates must be below three per cent of all calls made in any 24 hour period for each campaign. An Ofcom investigation into silent calls last year found that some call centres' abandoned call rates can be significantly higher than the five per cent maximum required by existing voluntary industry codes. Ofcom believes that setting an enforceable three per cent limit will significantly reduce the volume of abandoned calls, while allowing the legitimate and responsible use of automated calling systems;

    All abandoned calls must carry a short recorded information message identifying the source of the call;

    Calling line identification (CLI) must be included on all outbound calls generated by automated calling systems. CLI allows people to dial 1471 and access the telephone number of the person or organisation calling them.

    Right then.

    Let me answer your questions, although I really do fail to understand why you are so keen to defend Homeserve.

    Question 1) "i asked you to confirm if what i said about the procedures on ofcoms website is correct for what homeserve are following"

    Answer 1) No, I don't believe they are. From the previous EIGHT PAGES of complaints in this thread regarding Homeserve, they are obviously making a lot of silent calls. This activity not only annoys the general public but it can also contaveen Sections 128-130 of the Communications Act.

    Question 2) "You also fail to answer the question about the email to the top man"

    Answer 2)I have never been bothered by Homeserve, so I wouldn't need to email the top man, would I? I believe my brother Ron emailed him, but as you are aware, Ron is on his holidays at the moment. Until he returns in November, he won't be able to find out how many silent calls, abandoned calls and messages he has on his answerphone.

    There, that's answered your questions hasn't it.

    I do hate corresponding with muppets, so can you please refrain from asking me any more stupid questions please.

    Whilst we're on the subject, it looks like yet another big company has been caught making excessive silent calls by Ofcom with a potential fine of up to £50,000. The exact details are here and make very interesting reading:-

    “Information message” means a very brief recorded information message which is
    played within two seconds of the call being answered, which contains at least the following information:

    · the identity of the company on whose behalf the call was made (which will not necessarily be the same company that is making the call);

    · details of a no charge (0800) or Special Services basic rate (0845) number the called person can contact so they have the possibility of declining to receive further calls from that company;

    · includes no marketing content and is not used as an opportunity to market to
    the called person;

    Brian. What a great website this is and thank you for posting all this useful information. At last, the general public can fight back knowing that the law is on their side.
    I had a silent call recently and they did not leave their contact details with an 0800 or 0845 number so the next time it happens, I'll definitely be contacting Ofcom.
    Keep up the good work.

    I had been receiving calls from this company too. I had a free warranty on a boiler that was coming to an end so they kept calling. What "me" has said however is the right thing to do in the first place as a few weeks ago i wrote a letter to homeserve telling them that i did not want to take an extended warranty cover thing and that i was not happy with the constant phone calls i was receiving about it. Yesterday i received a letter from their customer care department apologising for the constant calls and confirming that they had removed me from their telephone sales list. I have not received a call in just over a week now. So it does work.

    When someone receives a silent or abandoned call, the caller is required (by law) to have the following information message procedure in place:-

    ------Below taken from Ofcom website------

    “Information message” means a very brief recorded information message which is
    played within two seconds of the call being answered, which contains at least the following information:

    · the identity of the company on whose behalf the call was made (which will not necessarily be the same company that is making the call);

    · details of a no charge (0800) or Special Services basic rate (0845) number the called person can contact so they have the possibility of declining to receive further calls from that company;

    · includes no marketing content and is not used as an opportunity to market to
    the called person;

    ------Above taken from Ofcom website------

    I've looked through the previous NINE PAGES of complaints and not one person has mentioned the fact that an 0800 or 0845 number was left which would enable them to opt out.

    I'll also check that fact with Ron when I speak with him next.

    You now seem to be getting quite cross - so a nice holiday might do you some good - meanwhile, I'll carry on with the crusade !

    Sad people. You know insted of arguing like pathetic little children about who can find more info ( cos it is making this look like an easter egg hunt ) you should look at another forum on here about homeserve. The difference is the number that forum is for is 001922. There is some very good and helpful advice on that one. Much better than anything "me" or Brian have said so far. Those 2 idiots have just turned this into a grudge match between the 2 of them. Ignore this site and have a look at the one i have just told you to look at.
