I've been getting the same calls...about 5 so far...they keep insisting they are from Microsoft windows and that I have downloaded some seriously threatening files and that I need to go turn my computer on...I kept asking for someone who spoke english well as I could barely understand any of them...and when I wouldn't do what they asked he got mad at me and said "why are you wasting my time?" to which i replied "you called me!!"
Now I know to just hang up!!  Watch out for these guys - they are bad news whatever they are doing!

I too have had a scam call. Number was 127-252-3131.

Called themselves 'The Technical Support Desk' and tried to get me to allow access under logmein123.com to fix my Windows problems.

    Crooks. I use a Mac.

The buffoons just called me. This is nothing but a scam and in my mind worthy of castration, trying to sucker people into releasing their security protocol. Keep a loud whistle close to the phone and blow their mind next time they call.

Had a call from a Max Wilson today who said he was phoning from Microsoft to report that my computer had been infected and that whenever I switched it on from now on, it would be vunerable to hackers.I was immediately suspicious because I had asked what his name was and it was an English name but he had an indian accent. The line was really bad and he had a really strong accent which was quite difficult to understand. When I pointed this out he said he was arabic, which I thought was quite funny, how many Wilson's live in North Africa! I said that I thought he might be the hacker and wanted proof that where he was phoning from was legitimate and would prefer a letter from Microsoft before I would consider allowing anyone to investigate further. Even after raising my suspicions with him he was still persistant. When I asked him where he was calling from he said 145 Banbury Road, Oxfordshire, I asked which town in Oxfordshire and he said Welling Delling! I asked him to spell it out and after he had, said no such place exists, at which point he hung up! I did a 1471 and the number had been witheld!

It seems this is happening everywhere, (I live in California) and by the same people. I received a phone call, #213-221-3528 this afternoon that frightened me so bad I actually fell for "Andy Johnson's" (also Indian accent) story and allowed them to have  access into my compter. Five minutes in, my better judgment took over and I contacted Windows who informed me this company, "Advanced WindowsCare" were frauds. I was terrified as to what I had just allowed. The real Windows has been helping me, but please watch out for these people......they tell a convincing story if you let them! Hang up!!

It would be worth contacting your bank and telling them what has happened as these scammers have been known to install spyware/malware if they get remote access.  You may also want to get your computer checked out locally to see what they have done to it.  This scam was on  "Fake Britain", BBC1 this morning, and Microsoft made the point that they don't 'phone as they do not have individual details of computers.  The basic rule is never to give anyone remote access to your computer.

They just tried to get a friend of mine with this; they had fooled them into going to logmein123 and then downloaded and installed some software (AWCSetup Major.exe). They then tried asking for £99 and this is when my friend called me. I now have the computer with me and am scanning for malware, chances are a rebuild may be needed as you never know what they've put onto this machine let alone what information they may have taken.

If anyone is in the same situation then make sure you scan your computer thoroughly for any viruses and malware. Use combofix and malwarebytes to get rid of malware and ensure you scan for viruses with an online virus scanner as well as your installed one (trend micro is a good bet).

I'd love for one of these people to call me. Let them connect to a clean machine in the DMZ and track them down then post their IP and any other information all over the internet stating that they are scammers (but of course also give this information to the police too).

Please call me.... please... I'll have you for breakfast ;-)

i had the exact scenario as you described in your first paragraph.

Did you find any malware/etc that was installed on your friend's computer? I hate to have to do a rebuild, but have done the password changes for all my email accounts, etc, and virus checking - but so far, everything seems to be normal.

this scam seems to be spreading, rather than diminishing - based on the number of years on this thread, and also on the number of websites with this thread, including microsoft sites (google for it), and i live in The Netherlands, so its not UK or US only.

All i can say is that if you get a call about your computer being infected, from a caller with a heavy Indian accent (not being racist, but it appears to be the most common denominator), then you are a potential victim of this scam.

its depressing, but posting on threads like this is like "preaching to the converted", or rather, "preaching to the victimised".

    cheers

Number resurfaces after ten years. This is part of a PayPal scam, suggesting you have been the victim of fraudulent transaction. Of course it's all BS.
