But this is all a complete fiction.  As part of the con, when they start to attract negative publicity (i.e. someone blows the whistle on them) they make sure to buy a small amount of wine, as a cover-up, e.g. from the wine merchant Farr Vintners. So for every £100,000 they receive in payments from mugged-off “investors”, they only end up spending typically £1,000 of it on actual wine. Once they have covered their expenses for telephone, office hire and brochure printing, they spend the rest on themselves. How else do you think Aaron Britten can afford to buy a brand new BMW i8 (the price for the basic model is £100,000)? His old man Trevor Scott would have to fit out the whole of the Old Kent Road with new windows to make that.
