Just had a call saying i was getting error messages sent to microsoft support > I was a bit dubious so said i would ring back and asked for a number which is the one above so i am glad i looked up the number first -

I just had a call today - It was obviously a scam as I gave them access to a Virtual PC and not my real computer, and they didn't realise. She became quiet threatening when I pointed this out after half an hour of stringing them along.

All the 'errors' pointed out were perfectly normal - and this wasn't even a proper PC - It was a clean XP virtual image.

Unlike the con artist at the end of the phone, I am a qualified Microsoft Technician. Don't respond to anyone calling you in this way. Don't let them log into your real PC so they can break it, and definately don't give them your credit card details.

This Company called me to tell me that they had noticed I was having problems with my computer which I have had for several months now and he passed me onto his "supervisor" who would talk me into getting the problems solved. These people were both Asians and this should have made me suspicious but we do have people of this origin on our phones etc and accept it.  This woman was on my computer directing me for a while and then said she would be 45 minutes getting rid of all my errors etc but before that told me that I could be registered with them for 2 years at a cost of £154.95 and said if I would pay this, as it was still early in January I could have the two year plan for three years for the same price and my computer would be just like a new one but when the Smart Support Guys contacted me at the end of her fixing the computer I was not to mention the extra year she had given me free!!  I should have then thought that this was strange and when the Guys did contact me they told me they had nothing whatsoever to do with the Microsoft company - this was another thing I thought was suspicious.  I should have seen the light but I was so frustrated with my computer I just thought it was a genuine company  I got in touch as soon as I came off the computer with my Bank and  the £154.95 had already been taken out of my bank.  Then I was told to get in touch with another part of my bank that deals with the scams so they are trying to get my money back.  The computer has been cleaned out and the man who came to sort it out for me told me that I can change my mind within 7 days of this happening and my bank should be able to retrieve the money for me.  He has several customers who have had the same type of scam happen to them.
These people are the scum of the earth and it makes us all feel that we cannot trust any foreign people
which is a shame because they are not all like this.  I have reported this to the police and if anyone is interested they were pleased to receive my call and have asked me to let everyone know the telephone number in case they need to do the same.  The number is  0300123 2040 and they were very kind and helpful.  I received an e-mail from the Smart Support Guys today with the telephone number above and have reported this to the police today so let's hope that we can be rid of this company once and for all.

Sorry you were taken in by these guys. No-one who 'phones knows anything about your computer,they just rely on scare tactics and lack of computer knowledge. Apart from putting spyware/malware on your computer to steal personal information like bank details and passwords, any "antivirus programes" they may put on you can get for free on the net  anyway.  If you have problems with your computer it is always best to get it fixed locally.  Handing over control to someone who cold calls you is like handing your wallet to a stranger in the street. Luckily, this scam has been exposed by several BBC Consumer Programmes over recent months.
The calls come from India, using Skype or VOIP, and the numbers which look like the UK, are fake. If this number disappears another one will take its place.

The company called smart support guys London called me twice. The first time I stopped them short when they asked me to down load their AMMYY software. Despite countless requests they did not tell me the company name. The second time they called, I went a bit further and I followed his instructions to a point where I run software called joinme on my pc. I should have been suspicious because they were using a second software application.

I allowed them to connect to my PC and do almost everything they wanted. They run the msconfig and eventvwr from 'start , run' menu and showed all the error messages that have been generated on the pc as well as windows services that have stopped running. He was also saying that my pc was very slow because i have viruses called trojans that anti-virus programs cant remove. This could cause my pc to crash any moment.

The Senior Technical guy was called Rammy Scott.He gave me his 'direct line' as 0208-099-7527 and said that they'll need to install 3 programs on my pc that will sort out all the issues I have. Then he opened the notepad on my pc and I could see as he was typing what they'll do to my pc (all pasted below). They will install

1.Advance Window Optimizer - to boost performance and speed it up
2.Advanced Window Cleaner - take away on all online infections all unwanted files
3.Advanced Window Protector - protection on windows applications only.
(lifetime)

One off payment £83.45    12 months on line tech support

Now they were asking for payment, I told him I needed time to reflect and when I had done so I'd call him back on the number he had given me. I Googled the phone number  and the response was the whocallsme.com link. I opened the link and began to read about other peoples experiences with this company.

One things certain, having read all the comments, I shall not be contacting them and if they ring me again I will just hang up.

My advice, and I wish I had followed my own advice, to anyone who gets a call from them don't touch them with a bargpole.

You need to get your computer checked out locally as they may well have installed spyware/malware which will steal your personal information like bank details and passwords.  This is a common scam.  They software they were trying to sell you can be obtained for free anyway.  Giving remote access to your cinputer to a cold caller is like handing your wallet to a stranger in the street.

these got in touch 2day they r big scam i got taken doing my computer but my VIRGIN MEDIA SECURITY kicked in and they cut out straight away says it all stay clear.there number was 02071939836 do not know name wouldn't give

I got a call this morning from this number. The Asian guy (Mike !!) on the other end said he was from Microsoft and my computer was was sending error messages and could very soon crash !!
As a victim of a previous scam website (and pretty sure Microsoft don't phone people) asked why he would be ringing me when there are no obvious problems with my PC, all he kept saying was 'switch on your computer.
I didn't know whether he was genuine or not so asked for his phone number so I could ring him back when I had time.
He gave me his phone number which I have now 'googled' and that is why I landed on this site, obviously I am not going to return the phone call or answer if they ring back.
If you ever get phone calls like this, genuine sellers/service providers will be happy for you to ring back so you can check them out before commiting to parting with money.
Don't trust anybody who rings until YOU satisfy YOURSELF they are genuine.
(JUST GOOGLE THEIR PHONE NUMBER).

I was contacted exactly the same way that others have described by an Asian sounding voice that claimed to be from Microsoft. He told me that hackers had placed a trojan on my PC allowing them to use it for their own illegal purposes and possibly making me liable for criminal charges. The fact that my computer has been running rather slowly of late lent credibility to his story and I foolishly typed in the run instruction that gave him control of my PC. He demonstrated what he claimed was proof of my problem but his over use of frightening phrases and the mention of money belatedly alerted me to the fact that I was in the process of being scammed. I told the caller that I would have to break off as I had an important visitor and he agreed to ring back in an hour on condition that I did not touch my PC. On getting advice from my grandson, the internet connection was physically broken, I rebooted the PC and ran a full security scan for the next seven hours. So far I haven't noticed any residual ill effects.

Do what I did today - tell in a really loud voice to [***] OFF and never to ring you again.

Informed us that we had errors picked up by Microsoft. Charged £159.00 to repair it. Showed us initially the reports that showed errors and certain programmes not working. After apyment showed the error list empty. Spoke very proffesionally and convincing.

Time to have your system checked out by a local PC professional.       Why do I say that?

I was having lot of troubles regarding my computer. it was not able to connect to internet. I tried many local technicians but all went in vain. And on one fine day I got a call from a guy stating that he was from "Windows Technical Department". He told me that he was receiving error reports from my computer. I felt so amazed that i got another technician, I asked him again and again about his company. He told me that his company name is smart support guys. and asked me to pay £ 88.45 to fix my existing problem. I refused and asked him to fix the problem first and then i will pay. And believe me he FIXED my problem in just 15 mins. I tried nearly half a dozen local technicians but they didn't. so i believed them and paid. I really SATISFIED by the services the provided me

What an absolute load of lies.  These people are scammers, just like all the other  people who call saying they can see errors on a computer.  They know nothing about the computers, they are thieves and all they are interested in is getting remote access so that they can install spyware/malware to steal personal information like bank details and passwords.  Any money they can also steal is a bonus.  There is a warning about this scam on the Microsoft website and it has been exposed on several Consumer programmes on TV.  But, of course, you know that because you are one of the thieves.  Again, you are so stupid that you do not know that Windows is an operating system not a company.  Now crawl back under your rock.

These guys got me despite my best instinct. Same pattern as above stories and they have a very convincing approach. My warning is that when I downloaded a "Cloud" recovery system, the add-ons they put in my system caused the programme to fail 3 times. On further advice I downloaded anti-malware (there is a range from Download.com), during the clean up process my system was attacked 4 times by Trojans, thankfully I had my anti-virus software running. Eventually cleaned out 2 x Remote Control Users, 1 x Worm and 2 Keyboard watchers. Now have the bank recovering the money. All bank details also now changed. This verged on a cyber battle and SmartSupportGuys should be avoided at all costs. Police are taking this seriously. This will not happen to me again; will be running scans every week and the phone will go down to any similar caller.

Well I've just read all of the above and feel embarrassed to say that I too have fallen for this scam. I previously considered myself so very capable of not falling for this sort of guff it's clearly been a very valuable learning process if nothing else. So what to do? I've considered wiping the hard drive and starting again: looking for the programmes they've installed on my computer and deleting them; contacting my bank, credit card company etc. to change passwords and or account details; finding a local computer engineer to give my computer a check up. The only consolation so far is that I was conned on the first of June and, apart for taking my money for the initial payment, no other activity is evident on any of my statements to date.  
Beware! The guy who contacted me was very very convincing and the emails they sent me the next day were also very official looking giving their website details (which I checked and looked good), the tec support phone no.(0 207 1939836) their address (Head Office, SmartSupportGuys, PO Box 97562, Dubai, United Arab Emirates), my invoice no., all details of my credit card (as with any reputable consumer company). Then I got another email welcoming to the their services, outlining what service I had signed up to and how I could use it to best effect by phoning the above no. or emailing with any problems and in any case they would contact me every 3 months (they haven't so far) to see if I was having any problems no matter what computer system I was using in the future. All in perfect English. What was not to like?
This is a very clever and convincing outfit. I wonder if they have convinced themselves that they're legit?

I have recieved three phone calls from these guys in the last week telling me that my computer is sending a fault message to Windows, fortunately I have an Apple Mac, when I strung them along and called them liers the call was ended abruptly

They are still doing it! - call today, claimed to be from Microsoft, they were getting error messages re my computer etc etc, guy named Jack (but very Indian sounding). I asked him to reconfirm that he was from Microsoft and he said yes. I asked for a phone number so I could call back to verify and he gladly gave me the above number.
I called and it was answered as Smart Support Guys. I quizzed him around being from Microsoft and he said they advised in respect of Microsoft products but were not Microsoft. I said that when he had called me he said he was Microsoft so which was correct? He stuck with his second story of advising on Microsoft.
Realising it was a scam I asked to be removed from their calling list and said that I would be reporting them.
He just laughed - it appears they know that nothing will happen to them which is why they keep scamming people.
