    Possibly the same thing.
I received a call from a 'representative' of BT, informing me that he was dis-connecting me because of an unpaid bill. He demanded payment immediately of £31.00 , or it would be £ 118.00 to re-connect at a later date.
The guy wasn't even fazed when I told him I was with Virgin Media, allegedly VM have to pay BT a percentage for line rental!
I asked the guy's name - the very 'English' John Peacock with a very 'African' accent -
Obviously the fella realized I wasn't believing his story, so offered to demonstrate that he was from BT. I asked how & he told me to hang up & try phoning someone - he would dis-connect my phone to prevent this.
AND HE DID !! My phone was dead - no engaged tone, nothing - until he phoned me again.
Very pleased with himself, he asked if that was enough proof that he was with BT. I asked how the payment was to be made & he said credit card, there & then.
I said that I didn't know how he'd done it, but I had absolutely no intention of paying him , I didn't believe his name or that he worked for BT.
    He hung up.
Did 1471 & phoned his fictitious 0800 number - not recognised.

I phoned the police to let them know , I wasn't the first!  It's only just started apparently but it is escalating.

Their advice was to let as many people know by word of mouth of this scam. The fact that the phone does go off would probably convince some people it's real, so please let as many friends & family aware of this.

I got a call from this number yesterday afternoon, which I ignored. I then got a voicemail message on which I heard a woman's voice in the background (I recognised the Belfast accent) then suddenly, a man's voice whispers "liar, liar" right into the phone. Bizarre to say the least!

Blank voicemail message on my phone yesterday (phone hadn't run, but maybe I was out of range ofr a minute or so).  The voicemail system told me it was from this number.  Nearly called it back out of curiosity but having read the stories above I'm glad I didn't.

Robin's "disconnected phone" story above might be easily explained.  If someone calls your landline, unlike with mobile calls you can't end the call yourself, the other person has to hang up.  If he didn't hang up and just put his phone on mute instead, it might appear that your line is dead.

Anyway, I'm sure no reputable business like BT would disconnect your line just for the purpose of validating its identity.

I called 0845 600 7020 and asked BT if the number was genuine. It appears that it is from an official BT office in Belfast and there was a note and transcript on my BT account; ergo I'm not worried.

Had a call from a lady with a Northern Ireland acent offering to renew my phone discounts.  When challenged, she said that she was actually renewing my BT contract. She was argumentative and hard nosed so I guess she was used to being challenged. I am very suspicious about this.  Eventually, she gave me her EIN (employee identification number)  When I dialled the number back it said that it wasn't recognised.

This number called but when you try to ring back you are informed - "The number you have dialled has not been recognised" if a company is not prepared to announce who it is it must have very questionable marketing tactics!

Rang me in Hull stating that we are not with BT and we would consider coming back - told the girl that there had been a bit of a whoopsy, as Hull had always been a private system run through Kingston Communications and that BT never have, currently couldn't, and wouldn't ever be able to provide lines there.

Very sloppy cold calling - that should be one of the basics knowing which places have private (and locked) systems.

Just had a call from this number on my mobile - asked for me by name.  The Irish caller (not surprising as it's a Belfast number!) claimed to be calling from British Gas and said they had some information about my boiler.  The call was then either terminated by the caller, or dropped out.  Would have loved to have challenged as I don't have a British Gas account, and only moved to this property 2 months ago, so it would have been interesting to find out what they wanted.  I suspect they're calling more just to verify that the number still belongs to the person they've asked for and will end up selling it on to someone else for spam or sales calls!

Have been called 5 times by this number this morning and each time they never left a message.  The 5th time I answered and a man with an Irish accent was on the other end, he just said sorry wrong number and hung up!!! Something very strange about this.

Had 3 missed calls today in space of half an hour, yesterday had four. Never answer an unknown number, so I typed in to see who it was, glad I did. Tried ringing on a land line number not recognized. Don't know how they have got my number but I am sure they will eventually get fed up when no one ever answers.
