Well, I had THREE calls from this outfit today... Indian voice, "Is this the lady of the house?". The first two guys hung up when I started asking questions, the third one (who claimed his name was Glen) I was able to chat to for a while. Usual thing about lifestyle research. Said he was calling from "Harpenden, Hurts" - when I pointed out that he can't possibly be based in Harpenden if he doesn't even know how to pronounce the county he said he was actually ringing from Afghanistan. Afghan call centres? Really?

I asked him for contact details for his company and he didn't know. He insisted "someone at my house" must have entered a competition or participated in market research... and repeated this, parrot fashion, when I asked him the name of the organisation that had sold them my address.

He eventually hung up on me when I, in turn, parrot-like, kept asking him the same questions.

I had a call today from an Indian gentleman who was difficult to understand but he asked me initially if I was ............ and quoted my name I unfortunately was taken by surprise and said yes he then asked me if I would like to have all my bills paid for a certain period and all I had to do was answer a short survey.   First of all I asked him how he had got my number and he said from BT well that was a lie as I am not named on the telephone line as I live with someone and it is their line. I said I was not interested and not to ring me anymore but I am rather concerned about this as he could have other details about me i.e. Bank Accounts Credit cards etc.   I am 74 years of age and feel quite stressed about this does anyone know what I can do ?

I wouldn't mind if these phone calls had someone on the end of them as I could give them a bit of verbal but to get to the phone and there is no one there is even more annoying!  01113.  Like the prevous poster these calls just upset the elderly etc.

BT and TPS and ex-directory seems slightly helpful but is still useless, why not just give us more power
to block and allow what we want.

    I feel better now!

I am ex directory and registered with TPS, answered call, sounded like an Indian call centre, caller said he was from Lifestyle Research and could I answer a few questions, I apologised (don't know why) and said that I was just on my way out - he said ' JUST A WORD OF CAUTION MADAM, DON'T ANSWER THE PHONE IF YOU'RE GOING OUT'! CHEEK!

BT allocated our telephone number when we moved here 4 years ago (new build).  Callers from this 06468 number constantly ring asking for some unknown person (but consistently same name).  They will not disclose who they are and will not accept that said person does not live here.   If I tell them the person they seek  is unknown to us, they put the phone down.   Call back to the given number results in a "the number you have dialled has not been recognised".   How can we stop this?

Wrong post above, sorry.   Having read other posts, I realise that the 068468451872 number that called me today was indeed "Tony" wanting to conduct a "lifestyle" questionnaire.   I politely put the phone down on him, but I also had a call today from the seekers of someone, and when I look at the call list, I see it is from "Private Caller".
We are signed up to BT's privacy scheme - which is useless.   Best solution would be a system which enabled us to reject all calls whose owners are not disclosed - the can do it in Switzerland, why not here.   However, it seems that rogue companies have found a way round this by displaying a totally bogus number which would confuse such a wheeze.  Must be a way - any solutions out there/

I was taken by surprise and was silly enough to answer their questions. Has anyone had any bad experiences from this? I had a guy called Stanley Smith from the same company. I did try to google it and I did get some returns but I should have put Harpenden, then I would have seen it is not legitimate.

I had a call today with Number Unavailable shown from a male Indian call centre worker who asked for me by name and then said he was doing a "UK State of The Nation Survey" and would I mind answering a few questions.  I said what were the questions about and he wouldn't tell me.  Then when I said I might consider answering them he said was I agreeable to being called back by their marketing partners about any service that I said I was interested in.  I said I was not.

When I asked where he was calling from he said London but when I then said that no one from his country who had spent any time in the UK had the metallic Indian accent he did or used the odd expressions he did (which are normal colloquial Indian English as spoken between Indians but not how even Indians who live here and have any experience of working here speak it) he then gave up the pretence that he was in London at all. At this point I demanded to speak to his supervisor and he cut me off.

From the whole style of the call and the attempt to say they were representing numerous different UK companies I am sure this is precisely the same Indian call centre outfit that also goes by the name of Consumer Research Centre and Lifestyle Research Centre.  But presumably due to the mountain of complaints now building up against them they have changed names again and found a way to withhold CLI to avoid any danger of the normally highly complacent and incompetent TPS and ICO being prepared to take action against them.

If you can't provide a phone number or address the TPS Complaint website and ICO helpline always maintains there is nothing they can do about the company.

Can these jokers really not afford to have their phone number compared with the TPS so that they only call willing victims.  Surely with even half the UK's phone lines registered for TPS there are still enough lines to call and most of these people are likely to far more readily go along with the scam (given that they have still not registered with the TPS despite all the active promotion of it over the last few years).

I am having Loads of calls from the Lifestyle Research Centre. In the past week alone I have had 6 calls. I too am a member of the TPS.
I have phoned my phone line provider who can't block the calls as they are always from a different number: 00000, 000000, 05454789909, 06..... and unavailable, have all called me from this "company".
They can  not give me contact details and are insistant they are calling from the UK!
I have been called a lier by these people because they didn't believe that I wasn't with one of the big 6 gas suppliers, they can also be quite rude.
I have called Ofstead as advised by my line provider - but they were useless and said no one else had complained about anything like this!
I now use these phonecalls as light entertainment during the day. My husband and I are seeing who can keep them on the phone the longest. The longest we have managed so far is 5 mins, but it was very amusing when they got cross.

I have been called several times by these people over the last couple of weeks always wanting me to take part in a survey. Whenever I have asked for more of their details or explained that I am with TPS they hang up but ring again the next day. Should we all email the BBC Watchdog program to request that they investigate as these are certainly unsolicited calls from an Indian based company?

I have been receiving calls from 06468451872 for about a week or so. At 17:30 this evening I received yet another call from 06468451872. I answered and said Hello and it went dead.  At 17:55 I received a call from 06468451877.  I answered and politely said I didnt wish for anymore unwanted calls to which the reply was "F*** Off" and he hung up.
I am appauled that I was sworn at when it was this call operator who was invading my privacy.  I am registered with TPS to stop these nuisance calls but I still keep getting pestered.  If I knew how to report this gentleman I would!!!

Ok, so I am sitting here on my own....giggling out loud at your reply! :o)
Please please if you do record the next call and put it on youtube I definitely need the link! :o)
Thanks for the laugh Smiffy. I was annoyed after the call but this has made me see a funny side.  Although, they better not flippin' ring me again. If they hang up and you don't hang up your end does this mean they cannot make any calls as you are still on the other end of the line?  That's what I will be doing....leaving it next to my personal alarm which I has never been used and is on a drawer....it lets off a really shrill high pitched alarm.....down the phone into his lughole! :o)

Interestingly I just had a call from the "Lifestyle Research Centre".

Very poor line, and not very clear, had to get them to repeat the name several times over before it was undestandable.

"I just need to ask you a few questions for a survey" they said, so I responded "Well let me ask you one first, how did you get this number when I'm registered with the telephone preference service?"  and they promptly hang up.

Interestingly 1471 simply responds "zero zero" as their number, so I assume it's an international call.

Just had the very same call, an indian sounding chap asking to speak to me by my name. I asked where he was from - Lifestyle Research Centre.
Asked him where he had got my details from - "I'm sorry I do not know that, I just want to do a survey"...
Asked him where he was based - "Philippines - have you ever been there sir?" !!!!!!

Politely asked the chap to never call me again.. we shall see!

As mentioned by someone else before,  they are not a market research company as they were not able to answer me who I could contact to confirm they are a real market research company. Market research companies have to abide by rules and can call TPS numbers as they use random numbers.
They had my full name and address and wanted to know whether I had satellite TV. I stopped him there and then and asked to have my name removed from their list.
