I got the same thing this morning and was super suspicious, but it was basically because I had done too many online transactions in the space of a few days, and the last 2 to a charity tipped it over the edge!

I phoned the number on the Barclays website
    http://www.barclays.co.uk/ContactUs/Callus/P1242558110824
    08457 555 555
and that worked fine. I talked to one guy and he then put me through to the fraud team, but I still didn't like giving some of my details. The fraud team then reeled off all my latest transactions and told me that they were going to take the flag off my account.

It looks like this one is also ok, perhaps it is for Barclaycard:-

If you think you've received a fraudulent phone call from someone claiming to be from the Barclaycard Fraud Team, call us on 0844 811 9111 1 and ask to speak to the Fraud Department.

I got the same call, but decided to call the main Barclays number.  Went through to fraud prevention, it WAS a genuine call from Barclays, they were checking about some small amounts that had been taken from account.  So IF IN DOUBT - CALL THE MAIN NUMBER.

Just had the same call and it is a genuine number. A bit dodgy asking for you to touch your keypad to continue but it is a real call. If in doubt find a number on Barclays website of from your bill and call. My card had actually been stopped and it was a good job i called or i would have been without my card tomorrow, an important day for me.

Well, I don't think this can be genuine as I don't have a Barclays account and on the voicemail they left a strange woman's name. I think this is fraud!

Had the same today myself  - was legit but I phoned the 08457555555 to make sure and it was to verify a few payments on my card.

For future reference for you all, save your phone bill as the landline number for barclays is 02476842099

This is actually from Barclays - and it is the most stupid thing I've come across.

So.. I received the same text - to call the 0845 351 2288 telephone number, as well as a voice mail message ("automated sounding" - not a real person) "urgently"...

Having been repeatedly told by banks, etc, not to respond to unsolicited text messages or phone calls, I was somewhat dubious about calling, so I looked up Barclays "fraud" telephone number, which is 0845 755 5555...

After eventually getting through, I asked if there was a problem with the account, at which point I was told there's nothing wrong, there's nothing flagged... so I asked if the 0845 351 2288 number is actually a real Barclays telephone number. He confirmed it IS, and then he transferred me to that telephone number.

When put through, you do not get to speak to a person, but a completely automated system that prompts for security information which, upon entering correctly (e.g. d.o.b., etc) it reads out the last 4 or so transactions you made, asking you at the end if you can confirm they are your transactions...

In my case, they were - at which point the call is terminated (after 20 mins wasted on the phone)...

So.. its some crappy automated system. Not sure what would happen if I had said "no" they weren't my transactions. Funny thing is, none of them were out of the ordinary - a food shopping bill here and there...

How incredibly stupid of Barclays to send a text message and automated call - which is instantly going to get people to think "that's dodgy" and NOT call... and for those who do bother, to not to get to speak to someone. Bloody robots are running the place... and not a brain between 'em!!!

I had this telephone number ring me and the same recorded message. I checked on here first to see if it was a genuine number and followed what other people had done by calling Barclays on the fraud prevention number on their website.

My account had been compromised. The fraudsters had tried to spend £149.99 with Orange and £30 with o2 about 45 minutes prior to me receiving the phone call. Both payments had been declined and my card has now been cancelled.

I did call back this number. I would not give them any details unless they told me a piece of info about me eg Date of birth or postcode or something like that. They refused to give me any info so I refused to give them any. In the end, although this is genuine number, I would always look up the number from the official website and call that as there was fraud on my account.

I can confirm 100% this number is a genuine Barclays Fraud Dept number.

I had an alternative number 0845 351 2291 ring my mobile which was automated and read out my full name (including my oft used third name). After hanging up I received a text message from Barclays Fraud Dept asking me to call back this number.

Anyway, calling the usual Barclays number 0845 755 5555 confirms that a recent transaction was suspicious. All sorted now :)

It turns out this MAY BE related to a 3rd party Fraud & Marketing company called Adeptra who assist Barclays (www.adeptra.com).

    * If you receive a call from this with a name that is not yours it's because the previous owner of that mobile hasn't bothered to inform Barclays of a number change *

This is a genuine Barclays Fraud Dept number.

I received the call on my mobile and the automated service read out my full name (including my oft used third name). I hung up and dialled the number back on my works phone and it repeated exactly the same name. I also received a text message from 'Barclays Fraud Prevention' asking to call 0845 351 2288.

However, I called the usual 0845 755 5555 and checked and it turns out my recent fuel purchase where their chip&pin machine had failed was flagged up. I confirmed the transaction was genuine and all it well in the world

A point to note I think this is a bad idea from Barclays as even though I know the number is genuine I would still never randomly bash buttons on automated services.

Had this call and the message too. Called Barclays they confirmed that it's theirs, had to go through some "suspicious" transactions with an advisor. However absolutely agree: do not "talk" to the automated line, call barclays Fraud Prevention in person and speak to a live operator.

I received a text asking me to call the number 0845 351 2288 and shortly after that, my card stopped working. I called Barclays they told me that someone was trying to use my card to buy goods from a store in China, fortunate no money was taken from my account.

I am infuriated with the scaremongers on this site that do not check the facts and assume that everything is a scam. Obviously there are scams around but that does not mean that every call and text you receive is not genuine. It is wise to be cautious and if anyone is asked to call their bank and has any concerns, I suggest calling them on a number from their website or a letter.

This website is a good platform to share information but check your facts before contributing useless information.

This can also happen if you use your card in authorization transactions for forgien companies. For example Xbox Live is based in Luxembourg, and first time you register card it pretends to take £1 to make sure card is genuine, although it cancels transaction before taking it. Many companies do this and if they are based abroad Barclays will flag it.

    At least their watching

Got a text telling me to ring this number on my T-mobile mobile broadband dongle. I have never had any accounts or anything to do with Barclay's so I seriously doubt the validity of this number. I have no intention of following this up. This bank would not need to contact me and if they did would not text me to a number which even i don't know.

Was not sure so I called the fraud number on the Barclays website. They put me through to a different department who confirmed that someone was trying to use my old card online.
