this number called me about 4x today. i only answered the first time because i didnt see the number on the phone. this guy with a heavy accent was saying something (couldnt understand him) about microsoft and the security of applications on my computer since i am a windows user. i asked him if he knew for sure i was a windows user, i could very well be an apple user. he gave me some mumble excuse and i told him to stop calling me and im not buying into anything he says.

I answered a call with this caller I.D.  A man with an Asian accent (I think) wanted me to go to my computer and press the Windows key and the R key. I could barely understand him and was unable to make out the name of his company or the purpose of the call, but decided to play along. When I told him I had had done as requested (I did not!). He said it didn't work, try again. We went thru this two more times and then said it was not working and wanted to go into the control panel. I don't know that much about computers, but he was obviously reading my key strokes. I hung up at this point but am concerned
that he has access to my computer. wunderin wut too doo.

I got a call today from this number.   I did not answer it.  I subscribe to call blocking but because this number starts with a 1 the blocking feature does not work.  My advice....just ignore the call as I do.

I have been recieving calls fromthis number. Yesterday I answered it and then when I said hello the phone started ringing and an asian person had said my computer is running fine, I hung up. The next day I went on my pc and it said that my profile is being used by another user???. Yesterday they called 3x. I only answered the once. Today they called twice. I answered the second time and this time an asian male and he asked if my computer was running slow and I said no and he said are you sure. I told him not to call back and hung up.

This is the "Windows Event Viewer Phishing Scam."  Essentially it's a type of social engineering scam whereby they trick you into believing that your computer's got errors due to viruses/malware, and then they promise to "fix" it, after, of course, you provide them with a valid credit card number.  Don't do it!

The scam is discussed in more detail at this TechWorld Australia article online:

    http://www.techworld.com.au/article/314295/wi ... ctive/?c=480105

If the above link doesn't work, you can cut-'n-paste or search Google using the phrase I listed in the first sentence above.

Forgot to mention: this scam can come either from the number "123-456-7890" (a Skype gateway number) or from "unknown caller/number."  In either case, it's the same scam.

On Feb 4, 2011, at approximately 7:15 PM (PST) in West Linn, OR I received a call from 023-456-7890. A man with what sounded like an East Indian accent asked to speak to Mr or Mrs Hale. I responded that I was Mrs Hale.  He asked how I was and I said "fine?"  (I wanted to add  "änd what are you selling?"). His accent was heavy and he talked fast. Said he worked for a computer company that does PC support and wanted to help me with my PC.

Aha, this was real familiar, I've heard the exact sama intro in a previous call probably about a year ago, At that time I asked for a company name and they just kept saying they were a computer supporrt company and they wanted to provide me service for my Windows system. I just hung up on that call and didn't report it.

On the Feb 4, 2011, call I confronted this guy with the information that I've had a previous call from him or another person in his "company" and I'd like to know his company name.  He ignored my request and asked how my PC was running.and I indicated that I thought tthis was phony and I hung up. Got the phone number from my caller ID box  (as if this cna be a legit phone number!)

Obviously, I didn't stay on long enough to realize what he was phishing for.  Irritating!

If they are calling from Canada, CRTC rules apply, which means they have to display either the originating number, or a number which you can call back to (yes, they have a choice).  Call "spoofing" is not illegal in Canada, but telemarketers must follow CRTC telemarketer rules.

I received two calls from this number today for the first time.  I left the unanswered call to go to message, but the caller did not leave one.  The second time, I answered the call and the caller identified himself as a Microsoft Windows representative (with a heavy Jamaican-?? accent) and he knew my name!  I asked how he got my name and he said that he had a list of all MS Windows users.  He went on to say that MS users were experiencing a lot of problems, i.e, "when you use your mouse, does the cursor freeze."  I responded "yes, at the odd time but that it really hasn't been a problem."  He wanted me to go to my PC to do some troubleshooting but I declined by saying that I'm on my way out for an appointment.  I've since contacted MS at 1-877-568-2495, and the representative told me that I'm not the only one that's received this type of call and that MS is currently investigating.  The representative also said that I shouldn't entertain any calls claiming to be MS because Microsoft doen't contact customers by phone when problems; customers contact them.
