My daughter received a voicemail from this number. the weird thing is they knew her friend's first and last name. how is that even possible?  I'm so freaked out by this. The caller said that my daughter's friend owed him $40,000 and he better get it or he will put human s*** all over our yard.

First off, this is a phony debt scam. 100%. Besides, a voice mail is not legal notice of a debt.

As to having info, scammers can get that from your daughter's social media posts. Or from the friend's social media. When they are after large sums of money, crooks like to have leverage to make you think they are all-knowing, and legit debt collectors. In fact, they are engaging in threats, fear and extortion. It's a lot like the IRS, but with less mail.
