Called from 623-492-6031, no message so I Googled and came up with this site. I have a couple of Amex cards so I checked to make sure I made my payments and there were no unauthorized activity after reading this site.  No problems, no messages from this number. ??? Who knows.

Received call from 623-492-6031.  Didn't answer the phone.   I then called the number and got to an American Express CSR asking for my AMEX number.  Well, I have no AMEX CC, so I told the lady that.  She then stated they have had a number of these types of calls lately and would pass it to her supervisor and asked for my phone number to have it removed from the database.  Figured it couldn't hurt to give it since they called me first.  I have also reported this to the 'Do Not Call' registry.

I got a call from this number and they told me my on-line payment didn't go through and asked if I could pay for it over the phone. I told them no and hung up the phone. When I got home I checked to see if the payment went through and guess what, it didn't. The person on the phone that called me knew the amount and when we tried to pay for it, so this number may not be on the American Express card but it does have something to do with them. I also got another call from an American Express number a couple days after this asking if I would take a survey on how the conversation went with the other number.

1-888-800-5234 IS A VALID AMEX #, when a message is left the person has to say the name then an auto message is left, the other #'s in question 623-492-#### are linked to the american express location in phx az, if in doubt call the ## on the card if you dont have a card then go to americanexpress.com find a ## for customer service and tell them you dont have a card and have them run your ssn# to see if someone opened a card with your info..

We just got a call from these people and called the 800 number left on the VM.  Right away they wanted our acct# so my husband asks repeatedly why are you calling me?  They repeatedly asked for his acct#.  He asked again why are you calling me and the rep blurts out they're from Canada!  So hubby hangs up and calls the AMEX# on the back of his card and confirms IT IS NOT AMEX!!!  They are aware of the number and said don't give any information whatsover!!!  I concur with Viking, anyone on here saying they called the number and found it to be legit must be working for the scammers and think the rest of us can be easily confused by posing as legitimate posters.  I'll add to viking's suggestion to get a real job by saying get a friggin clue!!!  AMEX is on to you guys and you will be caught!

IF you receive a call from this number, it is the internal collection department at American Express... Beware, this is an OFFSHORE call bank that can barely speak, much less understand the English language.  IF you do receive a call from this number, answer it and then immediately demand that they transfer you to a domestically located call center, so that you can actually speak to someone that is coherent.  Either that, or call back to the customer service number on the back of the card.  Sometimes you will get English speaking people.  In either case, file a complaint that they're 'American Express', not Indian express.

I asked the caller for his SS number aqnd he said he could not give to me. I said well neither can I and then I hung up. They called our home no less than 5 times in one week. I say ignore it. If real they will send a letter.

If these guys are scammers, then my hat's off to them, they are VERY "good".  I too, just today at my home # got this recorded call.  The call "caller-ID'd" as:  623-492-6031.  Ther recorded message was that they had an urgent matter regarding my American Express Card to discuss, and that it "was not a sales call".   I am absolutely 100% certain my card is up-to-date, and paid in full, on-time, every-time, monthly.  This was NOT a collection call for me.  The human voice that was ahead of the recording was nearly unintelligible, but I went back & re-listened to it several times, and determined they were actually asking for my EX-WIFE (of over 5 yrs divorced now), AND asked for her, under her new (re) Married name!  It clearly could have absolutely NOTHING to do with me, so I called the # back. 800-542-0999.  I provided them absolutely NONE of my own personal information (I didn't even call back from my own home! ...I used a pay-phone ;-), but again - I do have to say, they at least SOUNDED very "good", and legitimate.  The operator who I was able to get through to after ignoring their multiple prompts to key in aan acount #, and just kept hitting "0" was very "clean" and professional sounding, and stood up to my interrogation of him fairly well.  Just for what it's worth - if this is a scam, and this can save anyone - be CAREFUL then, and don't be fooled by how "smooth" and "good" they can sound when you call back.

I have written now directly to AmEx via direct secure e-mail to ask them about this, and I will update here with their response.

sorry everybody...i don't like to be on the side of credit card companies but this was a totally legitimate call...was on my caller ID when i got home...looked it up on the web since the area code was unknown to me...saw all your postings...they called back not long after and i decided to test insted of hanging up...they were calling from Amex Blue which i have one...they asked when i'd make a payment...i was indeed late...i gave them absolutely no personal info...he mentionned updating the files and i said "ok...what needs updating?"..he proceeded to confirm my employment, approx. salary & phone numbers...never there was mention of my Amex Blue account number or my SSN or birth date, etc...this was not a scam at all...i'm very careful about this stuff since having my identity stolen in 2004...good luck to all...i can't leave this message everywhere but i did on a couple forums...maybe it's an Amex agency...i just in my case that it was no scam...

    Dear xxxxx xxxxxxxxxx,

Thank you for contacting us through the Secure Message Center.

The call and the telephone number are legitimate. However, they are intended for the Basic Cardmember on your Preferred Rewards Green Card. The call is not associated at all with your Platinum Rewards Card Account, from which you are inquiring within, here. Please rest assured that your American Express Platinum Rewards Card membership with American Express is in good standing, as you note.  I apologize for any confusion caused by our generic message.

Please have the Basic Cardmember contact our Account Services Department at:

If we can be of any other assistance, please let me know.

Seems my EX-WIFE has either missed a payment, or they are looking for re-verification information from her, to protect against potential fraud activity, on HER (entirely separate!) account, that she split away from mine (over 5 years ago now!) - and is just now starting to use.  ...But whatever.

Just to calm those paranoid nerves out there who may be worried if they did happen to call this one back, and give their AmEx account #, going through the automated system that answers, or what-have-you, that at least with this one, and these particular #'s noted here, - These #'s ARE LEGITIMATE, and they DO BELONG TO, and ARE COMING DIRECTLY, from American Express.

    I hope this helps.

I just got a call from this number a few minutes ago.  I don't even have an AmEx account and never have.  When I picked up the phone, there was silence.  I yelled "HELLO" a couple of times  before some woman said "I... uh... was looking for... uh..." and then it sounded like four buttons were pushed (which hurt my ear) and then they hung up.

I am getting LOADS of calls that are recorded messages for someone I don't even know.  Have been getting them ever since I had this number hooked up and am getting fed up with it.  I want to call these people back but don't want to end up getting even more calls so I don't know what to do about it except get rid of my phone number!

of course its amex if you doubt the recordinfg dial the number on the back of your card and will take you right into collections. The automatic dialer will dial wrong numbers or phone numbers that are old on an acct. Its no scam. Thats why we say the persons name before we hit the leave automated message so if it is a wrong number then you know it doesnt apply to you.

    get real
i dont have an Amex account and got a call from these folks looking for a woman i have never heard of. the agent on the other end apologized and said she'd make sure she would remove my number - i know it takes a couple days for info to get scrubbed from a list - and it doesn't matter if you are already on DNC and don't have an Amex account - wrong numbers happen.

human beings type those numbers into the system, just because amex has your information correct in one department does not mean they have it correct in another dept. they don't always share information. as a result, lists that should contain consistent info regarding the same account don't always do. everytime info is re-entered, the chances of a typo goes up. just look at the posts here! amex is huge and with that comes increases in the possibility of error. just because it makes sense to you and me that they should use the same data source across all records doesnt mean they do. call centers work from huge databases that thousands can have access to, that means thousands who are able to screw up your info. nothing malicious just incompetent - also, the folks at the number on the back of your card, or at a number you pull of their website doesn't necessarily have access to all Amex phone numbers. usually only the toll free numbers. what appears on your caller ID is the local number associated with that 800 number. you can have dozens of 800 numbers associated with a single local number when each 800 number is for a different purpose within a single call center. amex has hundreds of 800 toll free numbers no one knows them all and few call center employees have the spread sheets to look them up and cross reference them. i know, i work for Amex

Received a call moments ago from this number and spoke with Annie, she asked for our Mananging Partner by name, claiming she was from the Fraud Dept. regarding verifying some charges on the account. She was relatively pleasant. When i asked for a number to call back, she gave me 800-824-9289 and she also said if we are uncomfortable calling that number. we may use the number on the back of our cards. I like that approach better than trying to bully someone. I was told by the partner, that it was ok, they just want to make sure that the purchase was legitimate. And yes it was. Thank goodness for that. After all of that, i still don't like the fact that we are still outsourcing instead of giving americans the opportunity to have jobs.

What I read about this is interesting.  These folks are giving fantastic support to the telephone company.  At least ten times a day we get calls from them and when we answer, there is no one there.  Further, neither The Church nor anyone with The Church has or would have an American express Card.

I received a call from this number on both my work and cell numbers.  On my work line, the caller left a message that just included my name. There was no voicemail left on my cell.

I got a call from 6234926031 they said it was AMEX, I hung up and called AMEX because they had asked for a bunch of info. It turns out it is an AMEX number, it is for the Fraud department. Don't freak out if they call you, it's legit.
