    I am getting voicemails daily from this number saying to call back AmEx for a time sensitive opportunity. I called AmEx the first day and AmEx said they did not call me. Next time this number rings I'm going to answer it and see what they say and tell them to stop calling that I know they aren't legit. Don't give them your cc# if they ask for it, they would have it if they are really AmEx calling you!

    I just verified by calling AmEx directly and specifically asking, that this is indeed a legitimate AmEx phone number.

    I also got a call from this number after making an online purchase. They were checking for fraudalent activity, which I appreciated. It was a valid charge which they were calling about.All of this was confirmed through AmEx 1-800 number that appears on the back of the card.
    The number 623-492-6031 is to the AmEx Fraud Department so it i a legitimate phone number.
    I do agree about not giving out your credit card number to anyone over the phone who is not legitimate. Hope this clears issues up.

    I, too, received a call from 623-492-6031, but they didn't leave a message when they got my voicemail.  When I called it back, I got a recording saying it was American Express and asked for my card number.  I was hesitant to provide it, so I hung up and called the number on my Amex card.  The representative confirmed that they were trying to get a hold of me regarding an offer to give me a cash-back incentive if I paid down my account balance.  She did state that if there is any question to the validity of a caller, that the right thing to do is hang up and call the number on your card and they can immediately identify the legitimacy and nature of the call.  It appears that a number of departments within Amex get routed through this particular outside line, so a call from this number may be for any number of reasons regarding an Amex account.

    I've gotten calls from this number 4 times since Saturday. One time they left a message. A woman with a strange accent saying, "Hello. This message is from American Express. This is not a telemarketing sales call. We are calling you to discuss an important matter. Please return our call at 1-800-678-0738. We will be available M-F 8:00 a.m. until Midnight, Saturday 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. and Sunday 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. Thank you."

    I actually don't have an American Express account. So, there's my first clue that this is either a scam or a telemarketing call. Strange message and I won't be calling them back. Creeps. Get a real job.

    Seriously? They are asking for information such as where you work, how much you make, where you bank, and what is your social security number.  And you give it to them over the phone?  Heck no.  I don't care what private information of mine they already claim to have.  Not happening over the phone or over the internet. Duh!  I have noticed that I keep getting calls from this number and another number: 336-393-7010.  About a month or two ago I got repeated calls asking for someone I never heard of and the caller claimed to be Discover. I figure either some idiot has applied for credit using my phone number OR my number is on a phishing list. Either way, I don't have any credit cards because I hate paying interest. I work too hard for my money to give a percentage of it to somebody else unless I absolutely have to. The banks can have my mortgage interest, but that's about it!

    Hello all.  Okay, I've been in contact with the Amex corporate offices and have spoken to Ken Chenault's personal assistant about these calls.  Amex admits they are making the calls, but amazingly, they aren't sure why they are making them.  They are still looking into this, but it appears to be a telemarketing effort (and illegal one, since robocalls are now illegal in the U.S.).

    If you get a call from Amex, please report it immediately to the FTC.  They are starting an investigation and the more complaints they get, the more likely it will be that they can put a stop to it.

    Call the FTC at 1-877-382-4357, and file a complaint in person about the calls.  Make sure to tell them it was a robocall, and that you didn't ask to be called.  Every complaint helps!

    Amex may call you fro the following numbers:
    623-492-6031; 602-537-9012; 800-592-1160; 800-441-0521;
    888-819-2135; 800-824-9289; 800-678-0738; 888-315-0988;
    877-352-6747; 877-366-6737; 888-258-3741; 800-555-4318;

    Thanks!

    I also got one of these calls, and when I returned the call I was routed to people who asked for my credit card number instead of pulling it up using my name.  I then hung up, called AMEX at the nubmer of the back of my card, who confirmed there was no problem with my card.  This number is a scam, and no one should ever give any information whatsoever to anyone calling from that number.  I have to suspect that anyone recommending otherwise is either part of the scam or a someone who got duped by the scammer and hasn't yet realized it.

    I have been getting calls from this number and I have nothing to do with AMEX--they do not leave a message and I do not answer it when I see the call coming in. Eventually ? they will stop??

    Received calls today on both my home and mobile lines with messages left from "Dan" asking me to call regarding verification of charges on my AMEX card.  Also got phone calls yesterday from 800-824-9289 on both lines with messages left from a woman with the same request.  I am ignoring these calls and suggest you do the same after reporting them to the FCC.

    This is AMEX's number used when they notify you that there is suspicious activity.  The instructions are to call AMEX at some 800 number to verify.

    you are right!  i have been getting calls from both these numbers out of the blue the past few days.  The first time I answered it was an automated AMEX recording, but i hung up before i heard what they were saying.  Plus, after i hung up, the machine called back immediately, but i have not answered any call since then.  Annoying!

    I called back the number today (they are calling sometimes ten times a day!) and asked why they are calling and who they are.  He said they are American Express, and asked for my card number.  I said no.  He said the only way they could tell me if there was an issue with my card was if I gave my number.  I said no again, and hung up and called the 800# for American Express on the back of my card.  They suggested that I opt out of all marketing calls from AMEX, and after 30 days, see if that stops the calls.  In the meantime, I would never give out my card # or social security # or any other personal information to anyone who claims to be calling from the same company and should already have that information.  As for AMEX, if this is their company, they should be ashamed for calling people so frequently and disrupting lives.
