Follow-on. Get this. I called Verizon after I got these "services" stopped, and asked them to block all "premium text" services. They blocked them on all 4 lines. I asked them why, if they could block these services, that would not be the default option for new lines and if someone wanted these services they could be unblocked. Their response? [robot voice] I will pass that suggestion along. Of course, we do have business partnerships with these firms. [end robot voice]

So, the cell companies are involved in the scams. UNNNN believable. Throw away your cell phones.

Ok people, here's the deal.  Everybody start by taking a deep breath.  I've gone through this and understand the process.  It's not as complex or evil as you make it out to be.  There are tons of companies out there that operate just like this and I'm sure you come across them all the time.

Inevitably, you get a pop-up while browsing the internet, or click on an ad on a web page (either intentionally or not).  The graphic/link might have something to do with getting 5 free ringtones or testing your IQ, etc.  The ringtone ad is a little more straight forward going into it, but clearly states that you are signing up for a recurring monthly charge.  It might be in some of the smaller print somewhere, but it says it.  So by signing up for the "free" ringtones, you are also agreeing to let them bill your cell phone account each month.

The other methods (i.e. IQ test) are a little less straight forward.  You start answering some questions to find out your "IQ" or "what celebrity you're most compatible with" and at the end of it you have to submit your email address or something to get the results.  Somewhere in there, you type in your cell phone number.  On the page you enter your cell phone, there is some text in there explaining what you are signing up for and that it initiates a recurring fee.  But here's the key...  In order to be officially signed up for this, you still have to confirm or "opt in."  What happens is they send you a text message (based on the number you typed in earlier to get the results) with a specific pin assigned to your number.  You then have to go to their webiste and type in the pin.  Once you do that, it's like electronically signing your name to a contract.  The other method is if you don't go to the website and enter the pin, they will automatically send a follow-up text telling you to reply with "Yes" or "Accept" or whatever.  This is just an alternate method of signing your name electronically.  It's all completely legal AND binding.  They also do have documented proof about when and how your account was signed up for the service.  When you call the 800 number, they can actually read off to you the text message history both to and from your phone.  They can also tell if you opted in through the website or by replying to the text message.

I've had some people complain to me that they never signed up for these things and don't know where they came from, or how they even started getting them in the first place.  More often than not, it has turned out to be one of their children that has signed them up for this without their knowledge, or they just simply didn't realize what they were signing up for themselves.  I've also heard of scorned ex-lovers/friends of the account holder or their children doing this in retaliation.  In any event, the way these companies currently operate is 100% legit and legal.  If they were in fact slamming or whatever, they would not be allowed to operate as long as they have and they would not have the relationships with the cell phone providers that they do.  Keep in mind, these companies must have relationships with your provider in order to bill you through them.  Your provider has to allow them to charge your accounts, otherwise you, me, and everyone would be able to start making money by submitting random invoices to cell phone carriers.

The key here is to pay attention when you (or anyone you know) is entering identifiable information about you on the internet or anywhere for that matter.  Furthermore, know and understand your children's internet habits.

In the event this does happen to you (intentionally or no) and you would like to cancel, there are already a couple people who posted before me that have said how they cancelled their accounts with them.  Like I said, I've gone through this process and it's just as easy to cancel your account as it is to start it.  Just reply to any of the text messages with "STOP" (without the quotes) and it will automatically unsubscribe you.  The other option is to call the 800 number and have them cancel your account.

I hope this helps everyone understand the process a little better and talks some of you down off the ledge.

    Why???
This happened to me also.  I was told that the text included a pin number that had been entered in their website.  The first time I called they told me I had given permission thru a survey site.  They wanted my name and other info to issue a refund check, I refused as I'm not going to sign anything (like a check) that has to do with this company.  If they can debit your cell phone account then they can credit it the same way.  I'm waiting for a call back from Corporate, but not holding my breath.  I also filed a complaint on the FCC website.

    "Predicto"'s number is:  1-800-360-0518
Rep answered, thanking me for called. Asked for my Social Security Number to which of course I said NO.
She wanted to know what my account pin was with predicto - uhhhh  I told her I'm NOT interested, no account.
ZShe asked for the SOC again.  Eventually after a few minutes, I did give my cell # and she said they were block out my number.  Obviously, I WILL be contacting the FCC if I receive further phone spams like this, otherwise, I'm going to keep a close eye on my bill, and hopefully if I don't post here again, it means calling the 1-800-360-0518 number at Predicto resolved my problem.
