My mother received a message from this number saying a "relative" was in hosp, to call. She called the number, message that it's a law office, didn't leave a message.  I assured her that I was ok and that the call was probably a hoax/scam since there's no reason why a lawyer or collection agency should be calling her on my behalf.  BEWARE!   Thanks to all who've left posts.

Received an automated call supposedly for an employee at my work place.  After fighting through the automated call, I finally received the number 800-335-0123.  I called to explain that the employee could not take calls during working hours except at break and lunch, that it would be best to contact him at home.

The receptionist answered the phone "law offices", and put me on hold after I explained only that I had received a call.  The next person, claimed she was with a law firm, but said the name so quickly that It was impossible to understand.  I attempted my explanation, but she interrupted that the work number had been provided by the employee as a number at which to reach him. I continued to say that she should call during break or lunch time, but was rudely interrupted and she spoke over me.  I hung up.

The phone rang, it was the same lady, though she didn't identify herself specifically.  She asked if she had just been speaking to me. Recognizing the same voice, I confirmed that we had spoken, she demanded my name.  Company policy is to not provide your name unless you instigated the call. So she demanded to speak to my supervisor.

It's very ironic, but if you don't know us very well, my supervisor and I sound very alike on the phone.  When my supervisor picked up the phone, she got the caller's name - Sarah. The caller first accused my supervisor of being me.  When asked for identification, my supervisor identified herself as office manager, her title. The caller complained that I had been rude.  My supervisor informed her that she had heard my side of the call and I had tried to be helpful, and had not been rude.

The caller then proceeded to be rude herself, ranting and raving about how rude I had been.  My supervisor, having to speak over the woman's ravings, suggested she have a good day, and hung up the phone while she was still speaking.

If this was a scam, it's obvious the caliber of employee is not of the highest professional grade, because they don't keep their cool and do have knee-jerk reactions to people attempting to help them out with information.

I know legitimate collection agencies use the automated calling devices and recordings, and I feel that's rude enough.  But when you're harassed by a scam it's infuriating beyond frustration! I must assume this was a scam, because a receptionist, clerk, or secretary at a real law firm would have much more poise, and would be better prepared to handle calls without putting people on the defensive.

Just got a UNKNOWN CALL on my cell. Didn't pick up but they left a voice message. This lady didn't mention who she was but left a phone number. I have tried to "settle" this before and all I got was rude people speaking to me like I was dirt. They wanted me to send a payment through Western Union "money wire". They refused a PERFECTLY legal payment which I wanted to do money order. Sounds like a scam to me.

Received a call with Atty L. Hecker on the caller ID.  Asked to speak with my husband and that he was calling from an attorneys office, told him he was in a meeting so he left a message: call Lee Porter 1-800-355-0123 with a reference number.  I asked if he could give me a little more information as to what this was in regards, he said he was from APM Financial....

I got a call from a Henry Smith who said he represented attorney Hecker, and gave this number for me to call.  Since I discovered, via this site that Hecker is a collection agency and I KNOW I do NOT have any outstanding bills and am not responsible for anyone else's bills, I am NOT going to call them back.

This call came to me AT WORK, which really ticks me off!!!!!  I supposed someone has been busy 'googling' my name and found out my work number through our website.

    This is harassment!!!!!  Illegal!!!!!

this "attn heckers" office keeps calling my place of employment after i repeatedly told them not to! they continue to threaten to verifiy employment & assests due to refusal to pay an old debt. IF i could pay it & avoid this mess all together i would however some circumstances arent avoidable. It really irritates me that when i asked for a letter to be mailed they refused & also wanted checking acct info, Screw that i'm not giving my bank info to anyone & from the looks of it they dont accept money orders nor were they willing to accept a payment i could afford they wanted what they wanted & that was it!!! in a couple days they are supposed to 'verify" i guess we'll wait & see.

16 November 2010 Attorney Laurence Hecker and APM sued by state of West Virginia.
A New Jersey lawyer and his Pennsylvania-based collection agencies will cancel nearly $8 million in alleged debt they tried to collect from more than 1,900 West Virginians.
Attorney General Darrell McGraw says Laurence Hecker and APM Companies will pay $45,000 in refunds and to support consumer education.APM is the parent of APM Financial Solutions and Account Portfolio Management LLC, neither of which has working telephone numbers.
McGraw said Tuesday the companies unfairly pressured people and threatened lawsuits.
He says most debts the companies were trying to collect were so old, they could not legally sue anyone.
McGraw says the companies were also working in West Virginia without being licensed or bonded as required by state law

        Release Date: November 16, 2010
Attorney General McGraw Recovers $7.9 Million for West Virginians from NJ Lawyer Hecker and APM Collection Agencies

CHARLESTON – West Virginia Attorney General Darrell McGraw today announced a settlement with Laurence A. Hecker, a New Jersey lawyer, and several out-of-state debt collection agencies that Hecker represents known as the APM Companies resulting in more than $7.9 million dollars in cancelled debts for West Virginians.

McGraw’s Consumer Protection Division entered into an agreement with Hecker and his two affiliated Pennsylvania collection agencies, APM Financial Solutions, LLC, and Account Portfolio Management, LLC. The settlement requires the cancellation of $7.9 million dollars in charged-off credit card debt that Hecker and the APM Companies attempted to collect from 1,922 West Virginia consumers. The companies also paid $45,000 toward customer refunds and consumer education and agreed to delete the debts from credit records.

McGraw’s office began investigating Hecker and the APM Companies in 2006 after receiving complaints from West Virginia consumers who reported they were threatened with lawsuits and excessively pressured to pay alleged debts. To further embellish the lawsuit threat, Hecker sent letters to consumers on his law office stationery to demand payment of the debts. The Attorney General’s investigation revealed that the majority of the collection attempts were for "time-barred" debts, i.e., debts so old that the statute of limitations to sue had expired and lawsuits were therefore barred by law.

The Attorney General’s Office also discovered that Hecker and the APM Companies – which were attempting to collect debts in West Virginia without being licensed or bonded as required by state law – were demanding payments without any proof that they owned the debts or of the amounts owed other than a computer spreadsheet.

"The credit card industry and predatory lenders have sometimes saddled West Virginia consumers with exorbitant debts," Attorney General McGraw stated. "This unfortunate situation has now evolved into a multibillion-dollar debt-buying industry in which unlawful tactics are used to coerce consumers to pay debts they may not owe with funds they do not have.
"I will not allow consumers facing dire financial circumstances to be crushed by abusive collection practices. My office will continue our vigorous efforts to enforce the law against unscrupulous collection agencies and debt buyers."

To file a complaint concerning debt collection, West Virginia consumers can contact the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-800-368-8808. Complaint forms are also available at www.wvago.gov. For regular consumer news updates, follow the AGO on Facebook and Twitter.

    Got a call I didn't answer on Saturday 1/22/2011 from 609-570-3039.
Voice Mail with name Michelle Hobson w/ APM or APN Financial, return number 800-355-0123 and a reference (case) number. She was trying to contact an ex-girlfriend whom I split from 2-1/2 years ago!!!

I am debating calling back to explain, but doubt it will do any good. Ex-GF and I had a group plan cell phone contract, but we split that apart when we broke up.

Wanted to speak with a specific party and had an address but no phone number.  Would not identify the company except to say he was in New Jersey and it was a personal number.  I pulled the number online and after reading it explained that I would not be relaying the message as the information in the computer sounded like it was a fraudulent call.  Alan Wolf said that anyone can make a complaint about a phone number....there are complaints about Walmart which is a legitimate company.  I advised that his message would not be relayed.

Here is some useful advice to newcomers.  First off, if an attorney calls you to collect a debt, it's usually an attorney who could not make it as a Lawyer, and resorts to Debt Collection to make ends meet.  They prey on the weak, and try to scare you because they mask themselves as a Law Firm.  Secondly, you can not be sued by any attorney that is not in your state.  If a so called attorney calls you from another state other than yours, then disregard the call..stop answering the calls, and they move on...they are just looking for an easy fast buck.  If an attorney from your state does call, chances are they will not sue you unless the debt is very large, and if they do send you a summons, file Bankruptcy.  If you do talk to an attorney that has called you, tell them you are thinking of filing Bankruptcy, chances are, they will move on and stop calling.  Like I said, these are bottom feeders that do not adhere to the rules, and prey on the weak with phoney scare tactics, don't be intimidated, the chances of ever being sued, is very, very slim...

Your comments are incorrect... I am one of the so=called "bottom=feeders that you talk about in your comments... First, You should understand that if the debt is yours you should pay it... Second, the 4 year time period you are talking about is call the Statue of Limitations and is not the same for every state, it can range from 3 years to 15 years.... GET YOUR INFORMATION CORRECT.... Remember that if it is your debt, YOU REQUESTED THE DEBT, SO PAY IT!!!

    Hi NC,

What did Alan Wolf want? He just called us and I think it's a scam.  Did he claim that you had an old debt?  Did he try to call back after you told him that you wouldn't relay the call?  thanks.

I got a call from Lynn Stein from ABM Financial saying that I owed money from my house that was foreclosed 3 years ago. I got suspicious after I set up a payment plan because I had never heard from the company that foreclosed on my house trying to collect this debt in this 3 year time span. As far as I know everything was taken care of. After I did some looking up, it appears I do not owe anything on the house anymore. I did owe the amount they are asking for but for something completely different from 5 years ago. On Monday I'm going to call that lender and see if they sold my account to this collection agency, but I'm starting to panic that I just gave money and my debit card number to the wrong person! I've been working hard to improve my credit and take care of things that I messed up on when I was younger, and I think someone just took advantage of that! She was very rude and demanded that I make a payment before hanging up the phone or basically they would sue me and garnish my husband's wages. She wouldn't even let me hang up with her to call my husband to see how much we could afford to pay immediately (he takes care of most of the bills) and call her right back. She kept referring to me by my maiden name even though I told her my married name. Another suspicious thing is that this debt was supposedly due to our home foreclosure, but she said my name was the only one on the account, not my husband's also, yet his name was also on the house and the loan for it.
