Ok so i was homeless and had a friend collecting my mail since i had no address. well we had a fall out and i was never told of any mail. well i finally got my financial circumstance situated. i now work full time and have my own apartment. i was contacted by two loan companys ecmc and cti. ecmc had put me on a program for nine months of 50 dollar payments to help get me loan out of collects were cti garnished my wages and will not let me do the same program that ecmc offered. one lady name kesha or what ever said if i payed $77 dollars on top of my garnishments it would stop wages. i told her i could not afford it so she asked to go over my cost of living. my first check after they garnish does not even cover my rent. and my second check we broke down my insurance for vehicle, food, cell phone, and other bills. she told me if i ate less food and didnt have a cell phone i would have enough to pay the 77 dollars. i was offended and a bit emotional that these people really do not work with you and for a lack of a better word treat you like [***].

I was contacted by a rude, belligerent CTI man at work today who refused to provide any information about company other than "CTI" and even tried to bully me into providing and verifying personal information about myself.  Under federal law, collection agencies may not contact you at work, they are not allowed to harass or bully you into providing or verifying information and they MUST provide their name, company name, and nature of the call to you (under Federal law) whether or not you agree to verify the info requested.  If they won't give you at least a first name, you do have the right to get an employee number and if the information provided is false, it is done so under penalty and purgery of federal law.

While I am a student, I am currently in school and do not have any outstanding loans as of yet (I haven't graduated yet).  I think CTI collects more than outstanding school loans.

Know your rights under federal law and when I mentioned that I did not have to, under federal law, provide or verify the info they were demanding, they began to back off.  The BBB is only good to a point (for reporting incidents) but to really put them in their place: insist and remind them they must provide this under federal law the CTI person gives you a first name and/or employee number, a location address and contact phone number.  Once you have verified their info., simply hang up and do not respond to their calls.  Instead send them a letter in writing informing them it is against federal law to contact you at work, to contact family and friends, or to contact you after 8:00 PM or before 9:00 AM.  If they won't, tell them you have caller ID and that their number will be submitted to a lawyer and that you will take whatever necessary steps you have to - to their detriment - to ensure they never contact you again by phone; all correspondence must be in writing.  Also let them know that you will be contacting the proper federal agencies to alert them of CTI's unethical and illegal business practices.

Hope some of these ideas help.

I was contacted yesterday by a John Walsh from CTI. He had called my place of employment and of course my manager took the call. I got yelled at for having a personal call. Personal calls can get me wrote up or even loose my job. This man was rude and kept asking me personal questions which I do not give out to people I do not know. I told him I was at work and was getting bad looks from my manager for being on the phone. All he said to me was that if I did not call him back this would proceed with or without my knowledge. I called him 3 times after work and got a recording. I called four times today and got the recording again. I left a message saying I would call him back when I can do so. I agree that I signed for the student loan but for health reasons I have not been able to keep a job or even make enough to live on let alone pay the amount they are expecting me to pay. I told them in the past what I could afford but that was not enough for them.

    The Man
CTI is another lame collection company. Understand the collectors are collecting
student loans by scaring people to pay.
I suggest you continue with your education, so you
wont pay your student loans. As long as your in school you dont have to pay your student loans.

    Student loans are collectable.

dude, i think you are from the company that we are all busting on.
i used to be a bill collector and its so easy to log in with an anon name, etc, and start talking up yourself.
    dont fall for this stuff.

also, its not only student loans that get collected from this number.

this is a bill collection agency.  they (try to) collect anything that is assigned to their company, for a commission... anywhere from 5% to 25%.

anyway, if you have a cellphone, then dont answer ANY calls on your home phone that are 800 numbers, or ANY number that is restricted or has no ID to qualify it.
if they know you, they can call your cellphone.

most collection agency's do not sue you.  it would cost alot of money to file a suit to garnish your wages or snatch your assets, and they are in the buisness of making money not spending it.
most of these people that call you are just people with a messed up job, working on commission, and they will say just about anything to frighten you, get you to pay.  cuz that collector will get the commission at the end of the month for all debts he collects.

listen, if you owe $1000 bucks, for anything, student loan, cellphone bill, whatever, these people calling you do not have the power to file a suit and wouldnt know how to do it even if they did.

dont let their words scare you.  there is a process, even for these vultures, that they must go thru to levy on your assets.

in point of fact, there are certain laws that are supposed to prohibit a collector from saying certain things, using scare tacits, threating law suits, threating wage garnishment, etc., but if your talking to a 22 year old kid who has his own student loans that he's trying to pay off, he's gonna say just about anything to scare you into paying.

give them nothing, no information, tell them they have the wrong number, tell them that person does not live there any longer, dont answer the phone, or just hang up on them.
they will keep calling, but eventually, they will pass it off to someone else.

frankly, you may never be free from the harrassing phone calls if you owe money.  but, you dont have to listen to their scary crap.

This company isn't accredited by the BBB. They call me for student loans when I don't have any student loans. They even called my place of employment. They call my fiance as well and tell her the same thing. I am writing a formal complain to the FCC. Oct 16th a consumer telemarketing act was passed. I know, because i sell consumer data. Unable to sell phone numbers now.

Things have changed in the last  6 months .I urge  you to call  the agency collecting your debt and hear them out . The Deparment Of Education  has changed the programs to help people in default

    Rules for garnishment
They  do not have  to take  you to court please read  below
    https://www.myeddebt.com/borrower/wageGarnishmentNavigate

    Administrative Wage Garnishment
Under the Higher Education Act, the Department and guaranty agencies may require employers who employ individuals who have defaulted on the repayment of a student loan to deduct 15% of the borrower's disposable pay per pay period toward repayment of the debt. In addition, the Debt Collection Improvement Act of 1996 permits the Department to garnish up to 15% of disposable pay. Garnishment may continue until the entire balance of the outstanding loan is paid. You should note that wage garnishment is used only for borrowers who refuse to voluntarily repay their defaulted loan and is not used with those borrowers who continue to make regular and timely monthly payments.

You are extremely wrong. Collection company's for  the DOE does not have to take you to court to sue. I would do more research before giving people advice as to your advice would screw someone over.

They have called me at least 3 or 4 times per day.  When you ask them to send you something in writing they never will.  I know that I owe this money but they are very unprofessional, pushy and rude.  Why can they not send anything out to people?  They want you to sign a contact with them then show me that contact in writing.  I am sure that many people really want to pay back their debt; but dealing with a company like this one nobody should have to put up with people like that.

Just got off the phone with CTI, spoke to a woman named Sarah to set up payments on my student loan defaulted debt.  I'd like to address some of the criticisms from above posters:

    1. Before asking me to confirm my D.O.B. and last four of my social, they told me they were attempting to collect a debt.
    2. At no time did anyone yell, threaten, or talk down to me.
    3. I was able to set up a reasonable payment plan within about 25 minutes of making the call.

Granted, everyone's situation is different, but I had no problems when I called.  This could be because I said up front I wanted to start making payments on the debt, but Sarah and the person in their accounting department i talked to were both pleasant and professional.
