- Lilly replies to botheredWell, I had my first experience with CIT TODAY. I spoke to 2 people and both were very kind and helpful with this very difficult and uncomfortable for me situation.
They were professional and I felt they understood my situation. Also, they assured my of several doable options.
I appreciate them being polite.
Perhaps if the person who felt harrassed was rude the CTI Representative reflected the same attitude in return. Still not acceptable but we can all lose our cool occasionally. - Rose replies to Correcting WhateverI work for the IRS, personal income tax refunds can be offset towards a student loan debt. The loan has to be from a government organization, however. If the US Dept of Education requests a refund from the IRS to pay off student loans, they get it. And if you file jointly with a spouse, your spouses portion of the refund could also be taken, unless you fill out a
Non-obligated spouse form (and it's approved) BEFORE you file your taxes. - the truthCTI uses Facebook to get your information such as phone numbers, where you work, what you post, who you talk to, etc. So for all you people who like to have your Facebook open for the whole world to see with all kinds of personal information, go on a head and leave that way so collectors can find you and bug you. If not, then put your Facebook as private as possible
- Caller: CTI
- thetruthThese idiots at Collection Technology Inc. use Facebook and other social media sites to locate you, your family, or where you work. If your one of those people who owe money and have a Facebook for the whole wide world to see, my advise is to keep your social media as private as possible. I know they use Facebook for a fact! And please do not link your cell number with your Facebook, thats probably the most easy way to find out if somebody has a Facebook page.

- owe student loans myself replies to Julie EdwardsI see your point and thanks for the information, but I'm sure you probably work for a reputable collection company. This collection company everyone is complaining about is doing some shady and illegal collection practices. I know for a fact it is against the law for a collection company to give out your personal information to other people that have no consent or need of your information. I know if the person that answers the phone says they don't know that person you are asking for you are to hang up and not call back or even threaten anyone. I'm an ex-collector myself and never harassed my debtors.
- Barbara DonalsonI receive calls from this # When I call it back I get a message saying something about Locator then the call hangs up. I am unable to determine who the inity is.
- No NameCaller ID says CTI, I didn't answer because it was an unknown number and they left no message. I understand from other comments it is a collector. I have no unpaid debt, past or present and never had a student loan. Julie Edwards wrote quite the story above about student loan debt and how important it is to let these people speak to you and "help" you. Well, in my case that does not apply. Do not call my cell phone! Cell phone numbers are recycled so fast. Maybe the person before had some problems, don't assume that number he gave you is with him for life. I am on my third or fourth number with Metro PCS in five years because of that very reason. One number they gave me was one that someone had used on their web page to call for orders for some special vitamin juice. I never give out my cell number, I always use another number I have and have that forwarded to my cell so they don't have my cell and I have a record of who called on which number. Anyway, I think mail should be how someone is contacted anyway. If I did owe anyone, your annoying phone calls wouldn't motivate me to pay anyway, so bugger off!!

- DariusPeople- DO NOT ANSWER THE PHONE IF YOU DO NOT KNOW THE NUMBER!
Do NOT talk to them on the phone and do not give them any information!
Change your number if need be to get some peace, and file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the BBB, and especially the Attorney General in your state.
Why people are answering the phone or calling these idiots back if they don't know the number calling them is beyond me. You are subjecting yourself to being harassed and upset if you answer the phone.
Take CHARGE of the situation.- Caller: CTI Collector jerks for Medical bills and Student Loans
- AnnaSimple, Block their numbers or change your number. These jerks robocall from many different number so just do not answer, people!

- High Pressure but wrongSO they called me at work regarding a student loan in default. They had the wrong person - wrong middle name, wrong last 4 digits of SSN, wrong birthday, but correct hire date and correct first and last name. Plus I never had a student loan. They said they verified this with HR at my employer with "Kathy". We have no Kathy in HR. I didn't let them know I work in HR. Nobday had such a call come in. Don't trust these folks. I work for a law enformcement agency and will turn this over to investigators if it looks like an ID Theft issue.

- Abosse18These people will call you even if you do not have any affiliation with them. I have had to deal with "wrong number" calls from them several times throughout the year. I do not know the name of the company, but they always ask for Mrs. Ward. They have told me that they would take my number off of their list, but yet have not done it.

- JoePlease everyone- File complaints against CTI in as many places as possible - BBB, State Attorney General, FTC, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and an attorney. They are bottom feeding people who are unprofessional and harass consumers, and as a group we can stop them.
Most of all do not speak to them on the phone and do not give them any information.- Caller: Collection Technology Incorporated (CTI)

- FionaPeople - do NOT answer the phone if you don't know the number calling you. They spoof local numbers all the time to make it appear as if it might be someone locally that you know. Don't answer the phone and do not call them back!
Once again, do NOT call them back for any reason, even if it is not you or if they have the wrong person, as they will never leave you alone.File a complaint with the Attorney General and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Also complain to Dept of Educ. If enough people file complaints, CTI Collectors WILL be taken off the Dept of Ed collector list for their shady business practices!- Caller: CYI Collection Technology

- DanAll she would say is "I'm with CTI over a personal matter please provide me with your dob and social". I'm sorry but if I do not know who you are, and you can not verify who you are, since identity theft even over the phone is very real. They need to provide a lot more information than this. I have a lot of personal matters I'm fairly ill, so that didn't narrow anything down. Also refused to tell me specifically what "personal matter" meant. I'm sorry telling someone I'm a debit collector, loan, etc is not going outside privacy or any regulated law. That's general information.
@Julie Edwards You may be a collector but you can not dismiss laws and rights afforded to those being called as mere hearsay. Those interested could look up exactly how debit collectors may interact with them. Many collectors go above and beyond what is legal. And since I am very aware of those laws. There is none of this blanket scare that collectors try to do. After 10 years any debt drops off your credit report, as it has mine. You can then further tie it up by requesting a financial hardship from the government, which prevents any sort of student loan collection. Is there a limit to this length, nope. If you can prove you have hardship, especially in todays economy it'll get extended each request. If another creditor says this is not true, I ask those curious to look it up, as well as the one saying its not true. It is very true, and very doable. Also you can only be called once a day, the law states excessive calling is unlawful. And in all technical terms just 2 calls can be deemed excessive. It has worked for me especially. There is also a timeframe they can call in, if they call outside this time it is also unlawful. And caught many doing just that. It is also unlawful to threaten, or do otherwise to those who owe. Its a miracle companies do practices outside what the law states is legal. If they try and threaten, you do have rights!- Caller: CTI
