Have the same problem - lots of "claim codes" but absoulutely no idea what to do with them. I'm gonna have to call my provider and get 88222 blocked - or I'm gonna have 2 change my sim card (which will be a pain, either way this has got to be a scam - unless anyone can show me otherwise.

I also get 'lottery' texts from 88222 I've only just realised it was these £1.50 texts that come in 2s that's zapping my credit. I've just called orange who said to text: STOP ALL to 88222 - I've just received a text back saying that texts would be stopped from this code within 1 working day.

Me too, just had a months bill through and it seems I was charged just under £1.50 per text. Don't know how they got my number and I wasn't aware of ever signing up to it. If somebody could tell me how they got my details that would be great.

    Thanks

    hi Jayne,
Many of these companies 'buy' lists of mobile phone numbers from third party marketing companies.
The company that operates this 88222 lottery 'service' is Marketing Craze Limited.
They were 'fined' £25,000 by Phonepayplus on 18 December 2008.  It's interesting to note that they could offer no evidence that the complaints had actually signed up.

    http://www.phonepayplus.org.uk/output/default.aspx
look at the Marketing Craze Limited adjudication > Information Provider(Select).

the part of the Adjudication that deals with 'customer' sign up is
    ALLEGED BREACH TWO
    LEGALITY (Paragraph 5.2)

Put a complaint into Phonepayplus and ask how you should get your money back.

This message is sent by 'lotto by text'. They have been sending me these texts too. If you call 0870 000 8697 you can stop the service apparently.

Dudes, what you need to do is ring whoever your network provider is, they will have dtails on this company, they say they dont, but trust me they do! I have worked for all of them, they will have info relating to how they got your number, helpline for that company, and how to stop it, and they will more than likely credit you the money that you have lost due to this, its a legal requirement once you have txted stop and if they still are sending you marketing they are breaking the law, and they can and will be fined, and you will receive compensation, so get onto your network providers asap!  Also due to all the companies who pass on numbers, everytime you buy something, leave your number with a company instruct them no marketing, very important as they can sell it on and on and on, without you even knowing!

I chose to register with LottoByText (I'm always forgetting to go and put my numbers on!) and have nothing but good things to say about the service. I've had a couple of small wins, don't think it's a scam. My daughter joined at the same time and when she decided to cancel after the free trial she had a minor problem with the service recognising her 'STOP' text but a quick call to customer service (0871 288 2680) rectified the problem.

just checked my phone bill, i have been billed for texts from 88222 for a good few months. I don't generally check my bills, as I have call and text plan with o2. Checked my last bill and previous two bills and have been charged 1.50. I will check further back, as I am bit miffed about these texts
particularly as I dont remember subscribing. I dont even recall seeing these texts on my phone. Does anyone know how these cowboys operate this scam and how I can claim these charges back?

    hi khal,
this is on the Phonepayplus web site.

Information provider       24x Limited, FTC Media
Service provider       Wireless Information Network Ltd
    BACKGROUND
PhonepayPlus received 20 complaints in relation to a service operated on shortcode 88222. These complaints related to a joke-telling subscription service which sent jokes by way of a reverse-billed text message at a cost of £1.50 per month.

Complainants stated that their first knowledge of the existence of the service was when they received an unsolicited text message which contained a joke but for which they were charged £1.50.
    (i) The Service
The Service Provider contracted with 24x Limited (the ‘Information Provider’) who had in turn contracted with FTC Media (also known as Daniel Layton Limited) (the ‘Service Promoter’).

'The company name is Daniel Layton Limited trading as Fonedata.'
    ---------------------------------------------

I'm guessing if this is the company that sent you the unsolicited sms then your number was on a third party 'marketing'(spamming/scamming) list.  Is there any contact details on the messages you received?  If not you o2 should be able to supply you contact details of the crooks (oops)...company.

had 4 of these texts @£1.50p each, all at same date each month(28th) and the same time 19 24hrs.TO STOP THESE MESSAGES, call this number 01179118350,and before they can say anything tell them you want to complain regarding texts you have had from 88222,state the fact these are unsolicited texts which break the codes of practice regarding telecommunications.they will the ask for your number, and tell you how many texts they have made and offer a full reimbursment plus £1 for your trouble of calling them.they will send a cheque for the said amount,if enough people complain, they just might close this number down.DONT JUST TEXT STOP TO THEM IT DOES NOT STOP THE TEXTS,ONLY DIRECT ACTION WILL

I received a text from 88222 and it says "New top tones".  I only by chance happened to check my balance and found out to my horror I had paid £1.50 to receive this text!!!!  Luckily there was a landline number on it for Help. I rang it and said I did not want these texts and wanted a refund.  She looked on the database and saw I had received one last month as well and I would be sent a refund for £3 and she would remove my number from the database.  I asked how they got my number and she said I may have entered a competition, filled in a survey and if I hadnt ticked the box saying I did not want further contact that is how my number got used.  I had to give my address to receive a cheque for the refund and I said I dont want that being used for further scamming.  Time will tell.  The number I had to ring was 01179118350
