i used to work for grc in NY. and it is a legitimate collection agency for student loans. once the loan goes into default, the loan holder sells off the loans to an outside agency. these agencies are who general revenue collects for. they offer repayment options to get your loan out of default and off of your credit report. they ask for either your DOB (which doesnt give any personal info away, bc what can you do with someones bday) or the last 4 of your ssn. None of that info is incriminating, and just an fyi, they already have the info, they are just asking you to confirm (yes or no). it is against federal law to give out any personal financial info without verifying one of these pieces of info.  they are not employed directly from the university you attended, which is why many of you say that the university has never heard of them. and GRC is a part of Sallie Mae. They have a legitimate website that you can check out online. Its not hard to find, and many of you out there with defaulted student loans would probably benefit from calling them back and making arrangements, since many of the programs they offer, will completely erase the defaulted loan off of your credit report. Student loans in default are the worst thing to come up on you credit report, other than bankruptcy. and legally, they can call you between the hours of 8am-9pm. they also have the right to call your family members or friends to get in touch with you. and ultimately, once they find your employment info, bc it is a federal loan, they can garnish 15% of your paycheck and your yearly tax return. just a little info for all of you out there that thinks its a fake company trying to scam you. it is 100% legit.

You sound like you still work for them. I don't have student loans and they called me at work so how did they get that information, and don't go assuming everyone is a deadbeat because it's not the case. I may not be perfect but I'm not a deadbeat so don't consider everyone the same.  However, they aren't suppose to harrass you. Must be nice to be perfect and know what you are talking about - oh that's right it doesn't apply to you because you don't know what you are talking about.

you sure sound like you still work for them. true, student loans are indeed hell for a credit report. However I like many others am far from default... I just recently graduated and there is NO WAY they have bought my loans. in addition giving out personal info such as dob or even part of a ssn is ALWAYS a bad idea... They have no right to ask for it... a legit company will do business through the mail with a paper trail. It is not 100% legit to keep calling me or threaten garnishment when they HAVE NOTHING to do with my school or loans.

I got a call from these people while I was at work (which I wasn't crazy about) so I decided to call them back after doing a Google search. I spoke with two people, one who directed my call to a group for Kaplan, and a man from their Kaplan group. Both were actually very pleasant and were just calling to remind me that my loans would be coming out of deferrment soon and asked some basic questions about repayment and if I had any questions. Easy-peasy, sweet and simple. I didn't encounter any hostility or get anything other than a professional tone from the two I spoke with.

Got this call today on my answering machine. The number is actually  my mothers residence, and I have not used that number in over 20 years. The message was recorded and very difficult to understand. The number cannot be called back. The number that left the message was 877-712-4291, but when I called it was out of service. I filled out the on-line form with the do not call registry.

I received a call from 886-843-9002 saying that this call was for me only regarding a business matter concerning Ashford University, this call is a scam because I haven't attended this college since 2008 and I transferred to another school. I called this number back and left them a message telling them that I have reported them and if they call my house again legal actions will be taken against them

This  number is for some company that calls themself GRC, don't respond to this call and if you do just tell them you are not giving them any information and that you are reporting them to the FBI.
This company told me on the voice mail that they are Ashford University
but when I looked the number up a company called GRC was connected to this number not Ashford University
This phone number and company is a scam

They're not debt collectors. Apparently my school had hired them for students to manage their loans. All it was was a courtesy call to see if I needed help with my loans. The message they leave sounds like a debt collector, but it's not.
