In December of 2015, a friend noticed a Notation on his  Equifax credit file saying that he owed just over $13,000 to Preferred Credit Resources Inc. who had bought the debt from BMO Mastercard.  It should be noted that CCL Financial is affiliated with Preferred Credit.  Upon getting the notice, he called CCL, told them it was not his debt and asked them to send whatever documents they had to prove the debt.  The collector was rude, obnoxious and basically told my friend to p...s up a rope and just pay the debt.  My friend already knew that this was not his debt and that is why BMO was unable to collect.  We made numerous attempts to have the credit file notation removed by both Equifax and Trans-Union.  Unfortunately both of these Credit Reporting Agencies allow their clients like CCL to post notes to a credit file without first demanding evidence to prove the claim.  We finally resolved the issue by filing a Request to Access Personal Information under the Personal Information Protection Act.  The day after the Request was sent to CCl and Equifax, CCl sent the documentation to proved that my friend was not the debtor and asked both Equifax and TransUnion to remove the notation from his file.  This is similar to a case that I experienced a number of years ago where a company bought a debt from TD and then attempted to collect it from my wife who never signed any documentation and had absolutely no responsibility for the debt.  After making a number of complaints to the relevant government agencies the situation was resolved but with a great deal and effort having been spent on my behalf to correct the situation.  Collection agencies, especially those that try and collect debt that has been sold to third parites engage in what in the normal course of business would be considered a fraudulent practice by trying to collect  debts from people that they know don't owe them.  I am sure that at least 50 to 75 % of these fraudulent collection activities result in people paying out of fear or frustration, simply because they don't know their rights and what options are available to them.  Even if they don't owe the monies the Debt Collectors will try and get them to admit some responsibility or liability for the debt in which case you are then on the hook.  Why wouldn't Debt Collectors commit fraud, when the law of averages suggest they will be successful and their pay is based on successful collection?

Well maybe if Citi would honor the extra I paid for insurance on my loan. And am now permently crippled after 6 surgeries. Some people aren't the low life's who don't pay there bills. They are people who can no longer work due to an injury and the insurance I paid extra for didn't except the facts and denied my claim

Megan was a one-time unregistered user and will not see your post.  If you have a notion to take action, better you work that on your own.
