This is probably a SPOOFED number. Many creditors call using a spoofed prefix from various programs that can change the name, number, and even location of the call. I will port forward this number and see the end-point of the call. DO NOT ACCEPT THIS CALL. This may be an attempt to obtain personal information. The people who do these sort of things prey on vulnerabilities; the call coming from jail has already caused concern for a lot of people here. Again, this is possibly a Social Engineering Attack. I am in the same boat as several of you. I don't have anyone in MDOC and don't want these calls!
So, I decided to call the MDOC. Explained what's going on and the nice lady there put my number on a 'block', meaning I will NOT get calls from this facility. That works for me!

Stop [***] convicts... thats how they stop calling.....

I've been getting calls from this number,and want to know why?

Received a call from this number at 10:40 pm at night. Who calls at this time of night? I believe this is illegal. This number 972-798-0395 is from a Collection agency, because they left a Voicemail.

Got a collect call from prison. He said his name chad i didnt accept collect charges of course. This is troubling. Dont answer.

I was in charge of the prisoner phone system at the largest MI facility for 22 yrs. This guy is "fishing", trying to get anyone to answer, strike up a conversation, and beg for some money. I can't speak about the system right now, as I've been retired for 3 years, but it used to be if you let the prompts play through you would get one that allowed you to block all calls from that number by pushing the designated number. Prisoners get phone numbers from any number of sources, including family and friends. Back in the day I had a guy who just randomly dialed numbers in sequence. Tried to call everyone in an area code.

Caller ID is Carrollton Texas.  The recorded message says "Mi Dept of Corrections" and asks to accept the charges.  Could not understand the name of the person (or inmate) who placed the call.

Won't stop calling

Last night I had a call from (972) 798-0395. I couldn't tell what the person was saying in the background, but the MDOC message asked me to accept charges. Just like others I've seen posting here, I don't know anyone  in prison. It did give me the option to decline, and also to block the number. Which I did both. So for you of those out there reading this and you had the same issue, once you decline the charges, after that is an option to block the number from calling back. I hope this message helps you of those that keep getting repeat calls.

I keep getting calls from this number and voicemails.  I've always hung up when I hear what it is but decided to listen to the whole recording.  It has an option to select that says you can stop receiving calls from this number.  When I selected it, I was asked for a 4 digit pin #, what is this?!!

There used to be a scam that was run out of prisons where the inmates would call, get you to accept charges, and then somehow snag your phone number, and use it to make long distance calls or whatever on your dime. http://scam-detector.com/telephone-scams/collect-call-from-prison

I am recieving calls from a phil from a correctional facility, does anyone know what this is?

The prisoner that is trying to call some one has this number on a card,972-798-0395  you dont pay for the call from a Michigan DOC the person making the call does... Apparently differant DOC areas havedifferant phone numbers.. This one came up as Charles,  before it said Carrollton TX. So if you are getting the calls and know some one in MDOC and dont want to talk to them. write them a note and tell them/

Keep grtting calls from this number. The call are from a J.R. Dont know any JR in prison. I constantly hang-up why cant he get the idea??

I have received calls ,3 days in a row from a prison. Called, several times. They stated they were calling from mexico city, couldn't give me a tax id number. I don't think they will call me again. If they do, recorder on. Answer and ask for tax id

I got a call tonight (Saturday @ 8:07pm).
The Voice mail stated that it was a pre-paid debit call from "Mike" a prisoner at the Michigan Dept. of Corrections.

I have been called several times from 972-798-0395.  I can't understand the name being spoken as the caller.  I just hear the message about the call coming from the Michigan Department of Corrections.  I don't know anyone in prison in MI. They are pretty dense that they can't figure out they are calling the wrong number.

I have been called by this number seven times in the last few days. Last night I got called three times within twenty minutes and leaves a message every time. It's getting ridiculous. Is there anyway to call them and tell it's not the correct number?  

You can block your number from these kinds of calls two ways: a) press 6 when prompted, make up a 4-digit pin and key it in when prompted, or b) call the telephone vendor that MDOC uses at 1-855-466-2832 and tell them you want a block put on your phone so that you no longer recieve prisoner phone calls. They'll ask you for only basic information, then will contact your current phone company and have them block the prison's inmate calling number. I chose to do option b above and stopped receiving these unwanted calls within a day.
