My son was on his honeymoon in Mexico.  He called home and this was the number that can up         998-106-9899.

That number is used by a common carrier (e.g. Virizon, ATT or Sprint) as an international number. As many of you I researched the number and found the same answer as all. What I found is that regardless of the U.S. phone number the person is calling you from the 998-106-9899 will come up on your caller ID. I suggest that if you know someone on vacation in the Cancun area to call back the U.S. known phone number. Hope it helps others.

Its more than likely someone calling from Mexico.   If you have family or friends....  My mom just called and her number was the same...

Got a call from this number. Posts here claim it is from Mexico. No one in Mexico has any legitimate reason to call my number. Apparently this is a SCAM being deceitfully  backed up by lots of accomplices.

My husband is in mexico right now. I understand that this number is a hub # and its what shows when he calls me. But how do you explain my inlaws both getting multiple calls at 5am from this number (no one on line just noise) when my husband swears he never called either one of them and there is no record of it on his phone?  Before I raise Hell with my husband, can someone tell me if this is possible???

I rec'd a call on my cell and at home from this number.  Didn't recognize it so I didn't answer.  Just as I was looking it up on here, my home phone rang again.  I listened to the answering machine and it was my daughter calling from her husband's cell phone.  They are in Mexico vacating.  Evidently all calls originating from there use a Mexican wiring difference.  If you know of anyone who may be out of the
country you may want to answer just to make sure!

some one named Barbara Walker in NJ is associated with this number she has been calling my friend not sure how he knows her  but this is the # she is using 998-106-9899 and it is Nj that he lives in and he has complained for years about hang ups and no one on the line calls? Maybe he can help his # is 972 670 8776.

My son & his wife just left this morning for Cancun & I just got a call from that 998 number but missed the call.  After reading all these comments I just texted him, hopefully it was him & he can let me know.  When I called the number back it said restricted number.

Received call from 998-106-9899 on April 15, 2013 at 301 Pm EDT on cell phone. Answered call and no immediate response so hung up.

Cell rang again at 325pm EST from same number 998-106-9899. Did not pick up this time.

Well, I got a missed call with " no number " in my cell and after 10 min this 998 number. I didn't  answer.

Just received a couple of calls from this number, which I rejected because I didn't recognize it.

I received a call from this number, let it go to voicemail, and got a voicemail with no voice on the end, just some rustling. Helpful to know here that it was a scam

Funny.  My boss was on vacation somewhere and this is the number that came up in my cell phone.  
I do know he likes Mexico.

It was a call from my brother in Cancun calling from his own mobile...apparently, everybody calling from Cancun shows up as this number

This number is known to be connected with a phone scam in which the caller advises that a relative is in Mexico and needs money.  I think that it's interesting and depressing that there are people (or a person) who has come to this site and peppered it with entries indicating that it is a real number and not connected to a fraud.  If you pick up a call from this number and listen to the person on the other end, you're a sucker.
