I had a response from the telecoms company - the number is being spoofed (or faked) and they do not allow their numbers to be provided for outgoing calls.  The calls do not originate on their network.

The response people are getting when they call this number back is nothing to do with the people who are making the calls.  They are working with the TPS and the police.

I've asked them to post some information here, but it's entirely in their hands.

Thanks Monosodium from the post. My name is Nick Walker, I'm the support manager for the company that this number is registered too.

The number is registered to Digital Mail, an Ofcom registered & regulated UK virtual telecom operator. Our services are all inbound services, so we can do things like send faxes to your email address, voicemails to your email, or forward calls on your behalf and do a few different things along the way.

One of the things that we don't do however, is outbound calls. This means that the person who is making these calls isn't actually using our network and even worse, is that we cannot shut them down and stop calls coming through.

What seems to be happening, is that this person or persons, are making calls and then hiding their real caller ID behind one of our numbers. Essentially, masking their identity. It's unfortunately, not a very difficult thing to do and virtually impossible to prevent. Funnily enough, even while writing this I got a call from an 0844 number with an automated message, that was registered to BT and I've never heard of them operating a loans company!

What we can do however, is work with TPS and the Police as I have advised Monosodium, to try and see if there's anything that we can do to help.

If you are getting called by these people, my best advice is to send a message to TPS or the Police if you feel it's harassment.

Received a scam call trying to say that I could claim back PPI (payment insurance on loans & credit cards which may have been mis-sold). I have never had PPI & have no borrowing. When I told the caller he should not be phoning me as I'm registered for Telephone Preference Service & shouldn't get cold calls, asked the callers name & company name the line went dead. So suspect that this call was aa attempted scam.

Trying to offer a PPI claim service

Called me today. Said he was from first call- I hung up. Totally fed up with these calls.

I got the same response as niamh - i.e. a recorded message saying everything would be repeated back to me, so I hung up.

I received a call from this number, trying to get me to make a claim for PPI insurance.  When I refused and told him not to contact me, he was extremely rude and told me to go away and kill myself.  When I rang the number back, it was an echo test only.  Who do I complain to?

Ill mannered South African bloke called today informing me about my P.P.I. losses.  Told to go away.

Glad you all found this stuff out, they've been called me for a few days now but it only rings twice and I don't get to the phone in time.

I received a call from 'First Call' informing me about PPI refunds.I refused answer any questions and informed her my husband was a member of the Fraud Squad and he would be interested in speaking to her, so could I please have their numer to call them back.   She then became confrontational and then aggressive, accused me of threatening her and hung up.

02070603887  called today - squawks and sounds of call centre, then Indian lady asks my name (which is unpronounceable) so I ask, who are you wanting to speak to, and she rang off.
This was at around 1.00 UK Time, 14 Sept 2011. I think she has called before, but sometimes this number is withheld

Just had call from this number on mobile - not answered as never answer unfamiliar numbers.

got call from this no. calls themselves first call they are a rip off co.do not listen to spiel just hang up.

Got a call from them today. I told them I wasn't interested in anything they were selling and the girl became quite stroppy and told me to listen to her "before jumping the gun". And then SHE hung up! I wish they'd all do that. Like most on here, I am registered with the TPS and only answered this call because it was a UK number. Next time, I'll use Jerry Seinfeld's technique:

“I'm sorry, I'm a little tied up now. Give me your home number and I’ll call you back later. Oh! You don’t like being called at home? Well, now you know how I feel.” and hangs up with panache.

This  no has called me every  day  for  the  last  week  at  various  times of the  day. I  do  not  answer  it  as my  phone displays  the  no  &  I  do  not  know it. I  just  assume that  as the  caller  does  not  leave a message  it  must  be a junk  call. I'm  sick of  them  calling  especially  on the  days  after  I have worked a  night  shift!! GRRRRR
