0208

just had this call and i never spoke when i answered as we have had alot of number withheld calls recently. they hung up after a few minutes but all these calls are becoming a p ain in the neck. We have got TPS but this hasnt stopped it

I'm registered with TPS. I revieved a call from 0208 at about 11:30 AM. Twenty minutes later I recieved a call from a loan protection claim firm with a local number. I am pretty sure UK firms are using a foriegn based auto dialing system to see if your telephone line is answered not to waste the cold callers time ringing dead or unanswered numbers.

This is a way of seeing when you are at home.  If you pick up during the day a few times, it is pattern setting to a marketing firm, and you may well see an increase in cold calls. Pick up in the evenings, and you are probably a working person, which equals money coming in. From demographic data/post code, etc, they can work out your income range and target you that way.

My phone indicates 'International' or 0208, so I don't bother to answer.

Very rude man asked for "the lady of the house" when I asked who was calling he gave a very english name for a very foreign accent when I asked which company he was from he became rude and said "don't you speak english".  I did hang up but would love to know which company he works for to take matters further!

We've had a few of these 0208 calls, at irregular intervals. So far, no conversations. Could be attempts to find out if we are at home or patterns of absence. Alternatively, could be attempts to persuade us to invest in a blocking system. There are other possible explanations. Sad people trying to make this world of ours even more pleasurable ! Don't get angry, just ignore them.

Have been phoned at 9.30pm. I overheard a woman with a Birmingham accent on my answer machine. We are ex directory, TPS registered. It worried me as I thought there may have been an emergency, as we have elderly parents.
Have never seen that type of short number before 0208.
What company is it? How do they get our numbers?

I've had one of these for the first time yesterday, fortunately my answer phone deals with such cretins.  Obviously they don't observe bank holidays.

GET A WHISTLE, USE ON THEM, THEY'LL SOON STOP CALLING.

Is it the banks checking on our spending habits, or the new welfare for work campaign.
Are they checking if you are out at work, or out at the pub.They phone at some very odd times.

Keep getting calls from a 0208 no on my landline I just hang up

0207, mainly inner London and 0208, mainly outer London are 2 code groups assigned to London. There are some differences, outer London 0207 numbers and 0208 inner London numbers.
As with any numbering group, calls can originate from overseas destinations. 0208 does not mean a call is from overseas, only BT know why caller identity is part withheld, a genuine outer London caller will, unless "number withheld" send their number forward, so ignore 0208 only.

Hi Groundmole and all, just had my 3rd call from this clown outfit in the past 2 weeks, i mentioned i was TPS reg the woman on the other end with a posh brum accent said they are beyond that law and are requested by government to carry out surveys etc for Inland revenue and Customs and other Quangos, i told her where to get off, that was the first call, seems she then put me on their annoy from now on list through my attitude,
Now i've got a serious attitude problem and will be lobbying my MP, this is total infringement of privacy,

Fed up with scamers!!!!!!! This call came from a so called Indian fella called Martin Edwards lol calling offering loans from fast cash"load of s**t"!!!! This Martin name seems to appear quite often on the web in different arrangements,trying to con people into believing they are going to receive a loan,don't be fooled with this guy he is a waste of human life and is only interested in coning you out of your hard earned cash.

I have had 2 calls now from the above number stating they were claiming money for me from a bank, as I am ex directory, before I answered any of their questions I asked where they got my number from?, they hung up!
The accent was american, my guess a scam, as you cannot cold call, aslo this was on Saturday at 7.15pm.

My advise is to hang up or state you will be reporting them to the Ministry of Justice.

I got a call from 020 8 144 3699 and they said they wanted to help me with my computer, it  had lots of errors showing on their server. I stupidly followed their advice but they may now have hacked into my computer.

If you gave these scammers remote access to your computer by going to a website, then they may well have installed spyware/malware on your computer.  You need to get it checked out locally.  If you do internet banking you need to change your passwords and also warn your bank to look out for bogus transactions.  Don't change anything on that machine until after you have had it checked.  You will also need to change any passwords you use for buying online.  Foe future reference no-one who 'phones knows anything about your computer.  They rely on scare tactics and lack of computer knowledge.  No matter what they tell you they have n0thinng to do with Microsoft or its partners.

keep getting 0208 calls is soooooo anoying i dont answer phone anymore put it on answerphone ..they never leave a messsage!! so not important..or they would do like normal people...also keep getting withelds...grrrrrr im supposed to be ex directory..no such thing anymore..these calls should be made illegal..they are nuisance.....
