Anyone had any successes with banks? UKASH or police in retrieving money, confirming an identity, or the like?

Currently on Gumtree selling some fishing equipment.  Responded to me via text but with no number, asking me to communicate via the email sarah75harlow@gmail.com - supposedly based in Peterborough.  Got the usual stock email where he/she/it offers to deliver whilst on route to her mum's....poor reception area etc etc... Didn't bother replying as I know how this all ends! Reported to police fraud unit and Gumtree.  Think they took the add down as it's now been re-posted today so I reported that one too.

    Hi,

I'm in the process of dealing with this person for a washing machine on Gumtree:

    http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/beko-wmb812 ... kgnew/105727228

I believe it's the same person as she is calling herself Sarah Harlow and using the number 07747192044. The emails she has sent are the same word for word as others posted on this thread:

"Don't know if it's been long since you've emailed, I've been out so couldn't follow up on my text message. Can't promise anything but visiting my mum shortly, wouldn't mind making a drop off  :) . If you'll send me your postcode I can check out on my satnav the distance to yours.

Reasonable price and accurate description, it's worth the money, no bad surprises. I won't go any lower.

Can be reached on 07747192044 low signal strength area :( but check emails regularly.
    Ta,
    Sarah.
    P.S. Will take cash only."

    and:

"Unfortunately I've just got called into the office (i get sent countrywide with less than 24hrs notice) so very busy till next week. Back at work we have some shipments for large items with parcelforce all week long. Just thought it would save you time and hassle if I'll send it along with them free of charge :) company benefits :) .

I asked around and it seems you can pay cash upon delivery/inspection. It's quite simple since they're able to wait for you to check it out, if not as described they can just void the shipment with no extra charge.

If that's alright with you I'll need a name, address, contact number and also date&time suitable for the delivery.
Working long hours so If you want to pop in and pick it up you'll have to wait till next week or so when hopefully I'll get my head around :)
    Let me know either way.
    Sarah."

In her latest email a link was included to a google profile. She may just have included it to make her seem more legitimate but I've included the link incase it's of any use:

This thread has already stoped some people getting scammed.

This person has a new mobile no. 07747192044. There is already a thread on this site for that number.

Latest one is posted on gumtree here,

    http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/white-paint ... l-use/103927998

Any replies to this get you an e-mail from Sarah Harlow, complete with (fake I presume) link to Google+ page to make it seem more credible, similar to those described in posts here. Then followed up by request for cash via UKASH or PayPoint.

Thanks all for posting, it certainly makes checking out potential scams much easier, and good luck to all investigating.

Just got the same problem, 'Sarah Harlow'  (text name 'sarah.s.iph' - phone number was not revealed) selling an Ipad on Gumtree.
Same story, asking ma to email etc.

    Nothing further so far.
How can Gumtree keep allowing this scamster / fraudster access to their site?

IF YOU HAVE ALREADY PURCHASED THE UKASH VOUCHERS PHONE THEM ASAP TO VOID THE CODES call 1800411073

As soon as you realise this is a scam try to void the vouchers I know of at least one person who voided the voucher before it was cashed.

Gumtree are not replying to reporting the email or ads as fraudulent- they will have to deal with watchdog and a serverley tarnished reputation for this.

Parcelforce are claiming it is not their responsibility to post warnings on Gumtree.

I think that if lots of people get in touch with Ukash quoting this incident, making the same points they will have to concede some error or omission of responsibility on their part - here are some points to make:

Suggestion1.  Ukash change your 'commercial agreements' to require identity to use ukash. In addition I suggest that you retain the right to void codes. This may not be in your immediate commercial interest but as Ukash is aware there are criminals who are easily getting away with the unclear and sparse information you are putting forward. In the long term ukash' reputation is (and is currently) going to suffer.

Suggestion2. Due to the fact that many people have been under the misapprehension that it was possible to send photos of the vouchers I suggest that you differentiate in your language use between the voucher and the code. People have thought it is safe to send a picture but not the receipt. I think you use the terms synonymously when they are not the same thing. You refer often to paying with the voucher which is ambiguious since that could refer to a) the voucher (physical receipt) or b) the voucher (the voucher code). This is an error in your document authoring and an oversight in your technical nomenclature.

Suggestion3. You cease from giving the vague and inaccurate advice 'treat as cash' since one can send photos of cash and not be scammed by someone using the serial code from the note. In this case the analogy of 'treating like cash' is a poor analogy.

Suggestion4. Ukash must take direct and immediate action like: posting specific details on Gumtree about new scams. You should have a pop up or ad on the main page about the scams both on Gumtree and your site. Your scams do not detail the present scam which asks you to sent photos to parcel force. You do not have these details on your front page. You expect people to know that they are being scamed and then research the scam on your website. A warning needs to be on the front page and relevant to the current scam.

Please feel free to use the above points, if they apply to you, and add your personal experiences to the email to: feedback@ukash.com

Ukash claim that they make their agents (people who sell ukash vouchers via paypoint) informed about proper usage and that there should be leaflets at every paypoint giving advice on how to use it. However, there are instances where there are no leaflets offered and even the management of ukash issuing agents are unfamiliar with what they are selling. If this applies to you let ukash know.

In addition tell your local police (and email watchdog watchdog@bbc.co.uk.) they have the jurisdiction to obtain the details regarding the use of the voucher codes. Also, report to (in!)action fraud (they just keep details of cases) at: 0300 123 2040 email is on this thread.

Also, keep posting and updating re email adresses changing sarah75harlow@gmail.com is the latest and any change or tactics or phone numbers. Whocallsme has already allowed people to search the person's number and come to this thread and not get scammed.

The more people that put this persons details about and the more police bodies and heads (as well as some cyber sleuths) investigating the more likley it is that this person will be brought to justice and something done about this (giant) loophole.

Sarah Harlow is has currently got an ad on Gumtree for a Next sofa bed for £100. I've reported it to Gumtree - not sure if they'll do anything from what I've read on here.

Double size sofa bed. Purchased from Next Home Furnishings. 18mths old. Never used. Mattress still packaged. No marks, no damage. In a excellent unused condition. Includes the matching cushions.

Made in the UK for Next, this is a very substantial and very well made piece of furniture. Comprises of a two seater sofer which makes into a double bed. Not the usual cheap and substandard product. This will compliment any room.

Cost £743 at time of purchase. Very reluctant sale, but no room to accommodate.

    Overall unmade sofa size: W = 66in, D = 37in, H = 35in Bed size when made up: W = 47in, L = 72in, H = 17in.
