Hi everyone . Sorry I'm not very good at wrighting in englsh but I hope you'll understand... So was scamed too by this person ...!! I'm so angry! F170 gone...I went to police to raport it, they booked me an appointment to come with all my evidence ( e-mails etc.) and before my appointment was due i got the phone call from the police officer saing that THEY don't deal with those things and I should sort it out with gumtree. I don't get it! If police don't deal with that so who does? Where should I go and look for help?

Rather than the ordinary police try reporting it to Action Fraud.  They have a website with 'phone number etc.  This is the type of scam they are really interested in and they are very helpful.  I have never used Gumtree but I must admit I cannot understand why they allow this person to keep asvertising when they have evidence that it is a fraud.  Perhaps someone who knows more about it can enlighten me.

I have received the following response from Gumtree:

Please accept our deepest apologies for our delayed reply.

Thank you for your email reporting this to us.

We take reports of this nature, and the safety of our users, very seriously. I have used the information to try and prevent this person from using Gumtree again in the future.

If you have any other information that you feel would be useful, to stop this individual or others acting in a similar way, please let me know.

Finally, if you haven’t seen it already you might want to take a look at the safety advice on our Stay Safe pages: http://www.gumtree.com/help/stay_safe which also includes more information on what we are doing to ensure a safe and successful experience on Gumtree.

I am sorry that you had to come across this, it isn't a common Gumtree experience, but I thank you very much for taking the time to report it to us so that we can take action to protect others.

The response I have offered is that a) it is a 'common' problem (and I included a link to this thread) and b) Gumtree have not taken this issue 'very seriously'

    Anyone else heard from Gumtree?

I recently saw an offer on gumtree for a computer. At £140 it seemed too good to be true. I decided to give it a shot, since I thought it may have been a respectable offer, as the machine wasn't exactly new.

Here's a link to the offer on Gumtree:

She contacted me a day or two later. With the alias of; Jennifer Bright.

This scam is also operating under the name Melanie Wherton. (melanie75wherton@gmail.com / 07973-425-052)

I just had the same experience... Too good to be true - a Fender Rhodes Mark II piano for £250.

I watch Rhodes pianos on eBay all the time (I will own one, one day!) This particular Gumtree advert was word-for-word the same / same pictures as a piano I had on my watch list. That piano had a starting bid of £500 - I was tempted by that and watched the auction through. I ended up not bidding and the piano didn't actually sell. So when I saw the same piano turn up for £250 I thought it was legit - it didn't sell on eBay, so they were trying to get rid of it on Gumtree.

I emailed my interest yesterday morning - I received the same text as everybody else, regarding 'more information', so I emailed her. Then the advert vanished... so I thought it had been sold, and why wouldn't it have at £250?! Then I received the infamous email this morning...

    "Hi Not Thistime,
Don't know if it's been long since you've emailed, I've been out so couldn't follow up on my text message. Can't promise anything but visiting my mum shortly, wouldn't mind making a drop off :) .

If you'll send me your postcode I can check out on my satnav the distance to yours.

Reasonable price and accurate description, it's worth the money, no bad surprises. I won't go any lower.
Can be reached on 07973-425-052 low signal strength area :( but check emails regularly.
    Ta,
    Mel.
    P.S. Will take cash only"

I thought it was odd that a direct question of mine wasn't answered... Also I don't live in London, so a  'drop off' was not possible. I thought I'd call to made other arrangements, but something made me Google the mobile number (probably the over use of 'smilies' if I'm honest) and then I ended up here.

Had I lived in London I may have gone along with this... Who knows. Either way, I'm pretty angry that my time has been wasted over this. I hope they find out the person(s) behind it and they're dealt with accordingly.

I still can't figure out how they're making money off this scam. Is it UKCASH running the scam? If not, how does the money reach the scammer? Why can't this be traced?

So, Melaine Wherton, or whatever your name isn't, not this time I'm afraid.

Ukash = Your Cash replies to Not Thistime
    | 3 replies
The scam only works because people do not understand that once the code on a voucher is known by anyone they can use that code as a pin number and take the money. They do not need the original voucher just the number.
A lot of people think that by sending a photo of the voucher only proves they have a voucher and still expect to have to give the voucher to the delivery driver. The voucher is worthless, the code is the value.

I've since learnt that this scam is a gang not one person and the codes are sold on to "dilute" the trail.
Ukash security is the problem, no codes seem traceable as an anonymous person can just walk into any paypoint terminal and withdraw your money as long as they have the code.

I was nearly parted with 220.00 for an aquarium as stated earlier i bought the voucher at pay point but i obscured the codes on photo's . They never got the codes either i tried to get my money back at same pay point i was refused another pay point i was treated like a criminal i now have to complete ukash form with the loss of a per centage and photgraphic evidence my bank details copy of my bank statement and proof of my address , so the scammers need to tell me how to get my bloody vouchers cashed as i am having great difficulty getting a refund....PISSED OFF...
