Called my mobile claiming to be from Virgin Media to talk about my broadband and phone account. (I am a Virgin customer). Caller knew my name but then asked for characters from my password which I did not provide. I told them to call me on landline and terminated the call.

Had a call from 08004089341 on my mobile purporting to be from Virgin Media wanting to increase my broadband speed.  He told me that calls were being recorded for my protection!  As if!  He then started to ask me details of my password to my account at which point I told him in no uncertain terms to b** off.

Who are these people?  I just hope they will not keep on calling like some others do.

Same here, exactly the same scenario.  I guess they must get lucky sometime!

I have just reported this to Virgin Media on my home phone and they assured me that it was a genuine call!  As it was actually me who made the call to them that time, I can only accept that they are genuine.  Just for info!

They Keep phoning, say we have some good news for you and can you please tell me your password before we can go on.   Which I will never do.

We have 2 lines here, whilst they where still on the I phoned then on their own number and they said no one was calling me from Virgin.

A few hours later the same number phoned, I gave them the name Mr G.O away. and put the phone down

I had a couple of calls from this number on my mobile and saw a post somewhere else that told me how to stop them.
Call 150, follow the phone tree for "thinking of leaving us" and you will eventually get through to a real person that is in customer service.
I explained to this person that I didn't want ANY more marketing calls from Virgin Media and he removed my mobile number from the contact list and supposedly put a block on all marketing to me (time alone will tell).

Try it, if we all do this, maybe Virgin will get the message!

Three calls on my mobile today from 08004089341. 1st at 10.01am then 12.39pm and then 12.58pm. I have already put this number on block in my cheap Samsung phone. The number doesn't ring but shows as a missed call with a little red cross beside it. They and others can continue to do this forever if they wish. lol.

Phoned yesterday from an Indian call centre saying they could save me money on my Virgin Media bill - they asked for the first two letters of my password which I declined to give (it'd not take more than a few weeks of phishing phone calls like this to get the whole password, so you should never give this type of information out to someone who phones you), asked for details on how the bill is paid which I also wouldn't give them. They said they needed this to authenticate who I am, despite them phoning me, unsolicited - I was the one who needed to authenticate them. So that call had to be terminated. This is, apparently, a legitimate VM phone call, the reason it doesn't show up on your account is because the call never really gets started.

Then about 20:15 they phoned back but it was a silent phone call (some background call center-type noise), naughty.

Today they phoned again and when the lady was told I wouldn't give out security information to someone who phoned me she got shirty and said she'd need to terminate the call, which was fine by me.

As this was wasting everyone's time and was now in the territory of nuisance calls, I tried to get into the My Virgin account for the first time to adjust my settings but they won't accepted the bill information to issue me a password.

So, like the person above, I phoned them and went down the "leaving us route" (buttons pressed were: 150 1 5 2) and a nice chap at the other end was able to take me off the lists, he also reviewed my account and found out I was eligible for a loyalty bonus that gives 10% off the price of the package, which rather makes up for the hassle. Last time I spoke to them I was able to upgrade my bandwidth, get the wireless hub (I needed to replace my wireless router, so thought I'd see if they'd give me one as part of the package) and got me free evening calls for 1p extra a week. These are the kinds of deals I'd be interested in, it'd be nice if Virgin would send me a letter about them (but as they are losing money I suppose it isn't in their interest) rather than phonecalls that can't be completed for security reasons.

The short version: Phone them up, get them to remove you from the list and ask them to review your account.

I might be old fashioned, but if they call every day and you wonder who it is, why don't you just answer? You can always hang up if you don't like them.

Sorry if this sounds cheeky, but your comments don't help the thread for people genuinely trying to find out who is calling.

As it happens, it is Virgin media customer service, and they rang to offer to change features on my phone bill to reduce my call charges. Haven't taken them up on the offer as I am wary being cold called, but its something I could look into and call Virgin direct to sort things if that's what I decide.

Perhaps they could actually save you money, but you'll never know as you didn't answer the calls...

Just received a call from this number at 5:20 on a Saturday, claiming to be Virgin Media.
The lady on the phone knew my name and had a very strong accent and I could barely understand what she was saying, and requested my security question, which I did not give of course.

I asked why she was calling, and it sounded like she was trying to sell me some extra service, to which I simply said I was not interested and hung up. Also asked which provider I was with for my mobile phone. Very suspicious, do not think this is Virgin Media at all.

I had a call from this number around mid day 04/12/2012 , they asked for my Granddads name who is the account holder for our virgin media services. I simply told them they had the wrong number and they said ''ok thank you i will make a note of this''. I have no idea what they wanted or who they where/where claiming to be but judging by others responses i am glad i was too busy at the time to ask them what it was they wanted or why they hadn't called the land line.

Hopefully i wont be hearing from them again but i suppose its too much to think they would give up so easily. I will be warning my Granddad not to trust them if he receives the same call (just in case) although i am sure he already knows not to give out details without knowing exactly who it is he is speaking with.

Anyway that's my little experience with this number, thank you to all those who have commented to help people like me figure out who it was.
