I had a missed call on my mobile from this number yesterday. They just called again, i didn't answer it because it's not from anyone I know and they didn't leave a message. No message no return call. I have now put it on my ignore list, which, these days seems to be getting a lot longer.

I have just received a call from this number.  They asked for a person who used to live here 5 years ago.  I said they did not live here anymore.  They then asked for the bill power, I told them that they were cold calling.  I asked them how did they get my number, they said that it was against the Data Protection Act to tell me.  They asked who lived in the house, I told them it was against the Data Protection Act for me to tell them who lived here.  They told me that they were calling all their customers to offer a new deal, I told her that we had never been a customer.  We had an argument and the lady passed me onto a team leader.  She told me to call  N power customer services to complain.  I told her I wanted to call complaints-not customer services as I was not a customer.

    She appogised and hung up.

Npower and Homeserve face abandoned calls inquiry

The fines for making silent or abandoned calls have recently been increased

Fines for silent calls up to £2m
Npower and Homeserve are facing investigations by the communications regulator for making abandoned calls.

The energy company and home maintenance firm, which have nine million customers between them, have been accused by Ofcom of "persistent misuse" of communications equipment.

These calls often occur when firms dial several numbers at once but then fail to have a staff member lined up to speak when a call is answered.

Both firms said cases were infrequent.

    Warning
Call centres use automated dialling equipment to make dozens of calls at once, but these brought thousands of complaints from people who received repeated silent or abandoned calls when staff were unavailable.

What are silent or abandoned calls?

Call centres use automatic diallers to contact large numbers of people.

When the call is answered, the recipient is put through to an operator.

But the person at home can find there is nobody on the line if there are not enough staff at the call centre to actually speak to them.

Silent calls leave the line empty, but abandoned calls play a recorded message.

Although the use of automated systems will not be banned, companies have been told by Ofcom to employ such practices more carefully.

In February, the maximum fine for regularly making these silent or abandoned calls was raised to £2m.

Now Ofcom has said it has reasonable grounds to believe that Npower and Homeserve had broken the rules.

It believed that both had "persistently misused an electronic communications network or services by virtue of its use of an automated calling system" between 1 February and 21 March.

    Response
Ofcom suggested that Homeserve repeatedly called people within a 24 hour period and that Npower played recorded marketing messages if nobody from the call centre came on the line.

Both companies have until 10 August to make their case to Ofcom.

Homeserve, which provides emergency plumbing and boiler repairs, admitted to the BBC that it had been in breach of the regulations for a very short period.

"Homeserve confirms that this limit was exceeded by a single outsourced supplier. This fact was uncovered by our own internal audit processes, and was remedied immediately upon discovery," a spokeswoman said.

It said its systems were now fully compliant.

A spokeswoman for Npower said: "Our average abandoned call rate is consistently below Ofcom's 3% rule. Their concerns only relate to a few random individual days where we have exceeded this level."

Barclaycard received the biggest penalty allowed under the old rules of £50,000 in September 2008.

I beg to differ!!!!! I don't fill anything in online, and if i want to save money i will be the one to contact people.    It is very frustrating when you drop whatever you are doing to answer a call that stops when you get to it, or somone askes for a person who has previously owned the number.  Just because you work for them doesn't make it right LEGAL OR NOT!!!!!

Just had the same call yes this a scam to see if the number is live and if they call a land line that is just to see if someone lives there that is why they just ask if so and so is there and put the phone down.
What I do with all calls make a name after you find out who they are then you will see the name and do not answer or call back.

I keep receiving calls on my mobile from this number on a daily basis. The first time it called was about 2 weeks ago and I answered it. After saying hello, the person on the other end just asked to speak to 'the person who pays for the gas at this property'. They didn't say who they were or where they were calling from, so I hung up.

Not sure how or where these people got my number from as I don't put it anywhere online, except for the O2 website to claim my Topup Surprises.

Is there any way of stopping certain numbers calling without having to change my number? I've had this number for 6-7 years and I'd rather not change it.
