Phew! Thank goodness for that! There didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. It's good to know that you keep a check on people manipulating the discussion - makes me feel I can trust the posters of the ones that are left. Thanks for the explanantion Julia.

The reason I was not sure the last post was yours was that it was so different in tone to the first ones. There have been a fair few abusive posts on here using the names of regular posters and we have learned to be wary. I did read your post and understood what you were saying.  However, my point was that IF this company denied receiving your cancellation, you have no proof.  They have done it with other people on here. Just because they are trying to scam people doesn't mean they aren't persistent.

I have changed my name on whoCallsMe simply because my original one was too close to my real name. I wanted to register a new name so I didn't have to enter a validation code every time but wasn't sure that I could because I was using the same email address.

Dawn: I tried to say the same to you as Nan has just done. Even if they are a scam, you might still need proof. I have made sure that I have the special delivery receipt. Maybe i won't hear from them again but can't be sure.

Apology accepted Dawn - I realise it looked odd when the post in question disappeared - and believe me, we all have bad days!! I consider that my dealings with TAPA have been sorted now, but like to keep in touch in case we can help anybody else new to the situation. Think that's why I get the odd nasty post.

Glad the mystery removals are sorted our and that your fight against TAPA seems to have been successful.  There has been some more activity on the other site we were all on.

I got scammed today. Your threads have stopped me going bananas..thank you all. I fell hook line and sinker for the protective element and  after a lengthy conversation with a reasonable sounding guy. Soon to change, no doubt. I signed up. Yes I know - idiotic and silly. I have informed my bank. What I'm not sure of is the cooling off period. The CAB info leaflet says 7 days from the day after the agreement - other sites say 14 days. I'm assuming I won't get the 'pack' from TAPA for 7 or even 14 days so, with only the unconfirmed address on their website to go on, do you think it would be worth sending a letter(s) / email / fax of cancellation to that address? The Bank said I only have to show that I have made attempts to cancel before they will step in  - after 30 days, that is - not sure when the 30 days starts from. More panicky phone calls to Bank tomorrow. Any thoughts??

abster: Have you actually paid TAPA money already? Most of us just filled in an online form but were not aware of any payment required until the pack arrived. You mention your bank's instructions which made me think that you had perhaps paid money already.  Do a letter to cancel immediately and send it by recorded delivery usuing the suspect address on the website as there is no other. Also cancel by email. They won't reply but you will have proof of sending. Do it within 7 days.

Phil advice is right. You should also mention that you are cancelling under the distance selling regulations 2000

They may threaten you but will go away in the end

Also report TAPA to your local Trading Standards . We want as many local TS services to be aware of TAPA as possible. I'd be interested to know which bank you use. I discussed this issue with mine although I hadn't actually paid anything but they would not have been able to help if I had done.

Thank you all for your responses - I initially signed up online, unaware of charges but someone (Mr Niceguy) phoned me and really frightened me with stories of disreputable scammers selling my info on to other disreputable people who could rescam me at any later date. I panicked... I really did. So I agreed to their paid service and gave my credit card details. The Bank say they are powerless to prevent the continuous agreement until the 30 days are up, I've been told, when they can involve their Dispute team.

However, in the meantime - I will do as you suggest in a letter and keep records of everything I send to show that I have attempted contact. I will also call the TS and have already logged it with Action Fraud.

Is there anything else I can do??

Sorry, Phil, I'm not concentrating very well... just read your last post - I used a  Visa card. I'm still worried, but they assured me they would dispute it for me.

Hi Abster: Did TAPA contact you as a private individual or in connection with your firm/business? I got threats in a phone call but not to do with passing my details on to other scams (though I  have heard that this does happen).

It was a business thing - will it make any difference do you think? The passing on of info Mr Nicey was referring to was about my worries relating to someone who had my number and he just saw me coming I'm ashamed to say. I have to repeat though, I am SO glad I found this forum - I was about to implode with worry before. Thanks.

Abster: Not sure but I only asked because of the warnings he gave you on the phone. Have you actually stopped the credit card in question so that TAPA will not be able to take any 'renewal' payments in a year's time or give your credit card info to any other scammer? If I had been frightened into paying, I would have then stopped the card.

Hi, yes - the card has been blocked now so no future bogus demands can be made. But after you mentioned that, I googled it all again and spotted that Businesses have different rules. Not sure what though - its not really a business though, but Mr Notnice kept saying my name and 'trading as' so now I'm panicking again - did he know something else? Am thinking of going to see a Solicitor / Lawyer tomorrow to try and clarify this as I can't eat or sleep at the moment.
