- DonnaThis is a genuine number - I dont use my Barclays account card for online shopping - but decided to purchase a few items from a well established online company yesterday and also paid a SKy bill last night over the phone that normally gets paid by my other half. Got a call from this number this morning - called back to find that it was Barclays - highlighting possible irregular transactions on my account. All the transactions were genuine which I confirmed with them using the automated service. Just goes to show that they are monitoring 'strange' uses - which to me is a good thing!
- Caller: Barclays
- JoIt's genuine. I received a call today from the number and I actually really like the service. It's convenient and quick, and if there are any issues then it forwards you to a real person (as it should!).
It makes complete sense to me to have an automated service like this, but like with anything it's good to be careful and I would never have gone ahead with this without confirmation from either the bank or like here online that it was genuine. - NoToAbuseGenuine Fraud Call from Barclays - but automated.
Part of their relentless penny-pinching illusions. Calling customers in response to unusual account activity is GOOD. Asking to verify date of birth info, is BAD - not for verification reasons but customers should NEVER be asked to do this from an unprompted call. Barclays know this having been warned before by the Data Commissioner. The fact that it is greatly disturbing to people seems not to register with them.
When I worked for Barclays their attitude to 'Date of Birth' was that it was generally useless as ID because it is available publicaly anyway.
What is wrong with calling the customer and asking them to call general customer services at the bank, and ask to be put through to the fraud dept?- Caller: Barclays Fraud

Firstly - I don't work for Barclays! But I do work in banking & credit cards as a consultant.
The number is genuine and it is a new automated service.
The system calls the number to which the account holder is registered if it spots unusual activity. To authenticate you, it asks one or more multiple choice questions and should not ask you for information directly. It then lists the transactions it suspects and asks if you are happy with them or not (at which point you'll speak to a person).
I cannot vouch for the friendliness of the service BUT if it allows more potential fraud to be checked without employing more staff (and I suspect the stats show that most "potentially fraudulent" transactions are genuine) then surely that can only be a good thing.
Banks and other large institutions are not good at making sure everyone in their company knows about new services such as this so it is likely that some advisors are unaware.

- FranI received a voicemail this morning asking me to call this number, from Barclays fraud.
I tried the number but I could not get through on it, so I immediately called Barclays on their main number 0845 7555 555.
The first person who answered checked my account and said their were no unusual transactions. However I insisted on being put throught to the Fraud department.
They checked my account and confirmed the voicemail was from them and they were checking on some recent transactions on my account, especially leading up to Xmas.
These transactions were on hold awaiting my call back to confirm they were authorised.
Therefore just to confirm, the number and caller are legitimate, but for your own peace of mind just call the Barclays main number and be put through to the Fraud department.- Caller: Barclays Fraud Dept
- RL LondonSlightly unnerving but genuine number.
Barclays do use this as an automated service, though it is a bit scary being asked questions by a machine. - JayneIf this number does call you then ring them straight away for goodness sake!! It is Barclays Fraud Dept. I've just had my card used for two transactions in America totalling £150 which is why they contacted me. Now got my card blocked and got to wait for a new one and fill out a form to claim the money back. Not great this close to Christmas but better than having you account emptied.
- Caller: Barclays
- DAHad a missed call and voicemail from this number, checked on here before ringing back. Turns out someone had been using my debit card details so the card has now been blocked. It's a genuine number and it's worth calling them back ASAP just in case you are a victim of fraud.
- Caller: Barclays Fraud Dept
- El DavoI've just had a call too but will check my account and phone the actual Barclays number I have. It seems like fraud and I'm guessing some of the posts on this page saying it's legit are the fraudsters themselves trying to convince you.
- boroI hav received today 2 calls from 08453512262/ It is supsecious. I recalled the number and they call themselves Barclays Fraud prevention..
I am trying to speak to Barclays but I cannot get through to anyone
This may be nasty number - GillyJI got a call from this number this morning claiming to be Barclays fraud dept. I phoned Barclays direct and they confirmed that fraudulent transactions had taken place last night on my card. Apparently how they do it is they spend a small amount of money on the internet - in my case 20p to an American charity, then they go in for the big ones. Someone had used my card for two transactions both for £150 each. The first one went through but the second was declined by Barclays and a block put on my account - thank goodness!!! I have been reimbursed and now waiting for a new card. Yes its inconvenient being without a card for a week or so especially this time of year with less than a week to go until Christmas, but id rather be safe than be open to fraud again. So, if you get a call from this number - RING IT STRAIGHT AWAY!!!
- Caller: Barclays
- JaneYou don't need to ring the number back if you're rightly cautious. As the obvious thought is that someone fraudulent is trying to get info from you, then go to Barclays online and look for how to contact them about reporting fraud where you can see for yourself that the number to ring is 08457 555555 then ring them and ask whether the 08453 512262 number is actually to do with Barclays Bank.
I did that and was was told it IS a genuine number and I was put immediately through to someone specific who went through recent purchases etc, and once it was clear that everything was OK, told me not to use my card for the next 10 minutes while they unblocked it (not their words exactly but something to that effect).
Once you've got confirmation for yourself from Barclays that the 08453 512262 number is genuine, then keep the number near the phone for future reference.
That way, the next time you get a similar kind of call, do a 1471 check to check if the automated call was genuinely from that number, and you'll know whether to ring it back or not.
Attempts on bank accounts are increasing, so despite automated calls causing worry, its certainly far better than finding out too late that your bank account has been hijacked, possibly emptied :)- Caller: 08453 512262 Barclays Bank

- TLJThis number called my husband & I put the phone down. Just called Barclays on the number on the back of your card, for lost or stolen cards & it is legit according to them. Definitely check it out though.
- Barclays it isI didn't trust the number so called Barclays direclty who transferred me to their fraud department.
It was a legit call although I will criticise Barclays and say that 4 calls in the space of a minute leaving an automated voice message does look dodgy but on the pluss side it did alert me to call them on telephone banking and get it sorted out.
It seems that Itunes triggered it for some reson. but anyway I would urge anyone receiving a call from this number to call Barclays Directly if they aren't sure.- Caller: Barclays
- patjwo7@aol.comhad 3 calls whilst at work to my home number ... did a net search before een calling the number .. so havent
- Dr AllanHad a missed call from this # this morning, with a voicemail to phone them back - I'm Mr dubious so I phoned the 555 555 # from the Fraud section on Barclays home page - the Indian call centre guy checked my account and I had no issues - he had no record of anything/anyone phoning me - and didnt recognise the number.
BUT - after reading this website I phoned it back anyway - it IS genuine, it doesnt ask any information regarding my card or account and it listed off 5 transactions yesterday for me to confirm.
I haven't used my card in months - then used it 5 times in 1 day yesterday so it makes sense that it's flagged up - This is their new service, to stop them just blocking your card like they used to!
Gets the thumbs up from me.- Caller: Barclays
- AnnI had a missed call from this number, rang back and it is Barclays Fraud department. A couple of very small internet payments had gone through and Barclays wanted to check that I'd made them, which I had.
Apparently thieves who get hold of a card number will make small online purchases initially to see if they go through(as account holders tend not to notice tiny amounts on their statements)before making large ones which would be noticed much faster.
I'm not keen on the automated things, but I suppose it means that Barclays are at least looking after their customers in terms of possible fraud, even if they can't get anything else right!! If they'd bothered to check back first, they'd have seen that the same payments go out every month...... <sigh!>- Caller: Barclays Bank
- slimceagirlThis is an automated call from Barclays checking transactions that may have been made to assist in fraud prevention. I returned the call and everything ok. I have received a number of automated calls from both Barclays and barclaycard which I was suspicious of at first but all has turned out to be legitimite.
