I too received this information and decided not to call after reading the content on this site. However, my 6th sense getting nagging me so I contacted Barclays themselve.

I am glad that I called because Barclays was trying to contact me and they were double checking on transaction on my card. So I would suggest that you do not use the automated telephone number but contact Barclays official number and ask for the Fraud squad.

Please treat this seriously. I was very wary about this number and didn't give any of my details. However, I then phoned Barclays and they confirmed that it was their Fraud department.
Things have worked out okay for me but it could have been very different.

Had three phone calls from the above number. it was an automated voice asking  for a particular person by name, each time was different. Then the automated voice would ask me to press a key on my phone, I immediatley rang off.

The automated voice only asks that you press a key this time, but it did know my full name. I followed my instinct to check up on this using the number from Barclays website and spoke to a customer advisor.

Initially, she did not know what the issue was but once I explained the detail she did find the issue and put me through to the fraud department. The advisor was friendly but obviously did not know what to look for until prompted.

They had blocked my card, so it is genuine. However, VERY VERY bad system for informing customers. I followed it up because not many systems know my full name AND the automated voice didn't ask for any confidential information.

I too had a call left on my answering machine while I was out claiming they were the Barclays Fraud Squad.  I was not at all convinced so called Barclays direct and asked them about the call.  The call was made to me from themselves as stated and my account was used in the early hours of the morning and they tried to use my card which was later declined.  My card has now been cancalled and a new one of the way.  There are so many of these scams around these days so I'm always very aware.

Yep, I've had the same thing, and it turns out that it is barclays.

Not the best way of getting hold of callers re. fraud, given that it sounds like a spam call (but guess that if your card is frozen as well, then...)

Like everyone else, I had a call from this number and phoned them back on their own number 0845 7 555 555. They confirmed it was indeed their number they use for Fraud Management but nothing suspicious was happening with my account. Very strange.

The one thing that got me suspicious was that after they asked to verify the phone number they phoned me on, they couldn't find it and so couldn't locate my details. I certainly wasn't going to hang about for their 'fraud' fraud department to get my personal details.

Simple, phone the proper number and report it. Now if they'd only stop phoning me 3 times a day! I'd only just got rid of phone calls from Kwik Fit insurance as well, maybe they're in cahoots.

I've had this number call me a few times over the last 24 hours (haven't picked up), but my bank account isn't even with Barclays. Is there anything to be worried about?

I just got one of these automated messages following a bit of online shopping.  Obviously the alarm bells started ringing but it IS genuine.

If you are ever in doubt just call the telephone banking number on the back of your debit card 0845 7 555 555 and tell them you have received a message from the fraud department.  I was put staight through and just had to confirm the recent payments on my card.

I had only made 5 online purchases but normally don't make any.  I have to say it's kind of good to know that they picked up on this so quickly and had already blocked my card when I called them back!

I would advise people to call this number back IMMEDIATELY. I slammed the phone down when i heard the automated "hello, this is.." then my mum did 1471 and pointed out it was barclays asking for me i rang them back and an automated voice told me of my latest transactions all of which i recognised except for one on "iTunes" i was told to hold and they put me through to a call centre. I was then explained to by a "real person" that there were 3 transactions, 2 last night each for £1 to iTunes, and one this morning. I immdiately said that this was NOT me as i do NOT use iTunes. They instantly cancelled my card and told me to detroy it.

What i did find perculiar is that the bank (barclays) could find it weird that someone of my age (17) was using iTunes. I researched it and apparently the fraudsters use it on iTunes A LOT to see if the details they have are genuine and will work. THEN they move on to bigger and better things and spend hundreds on YOUR card. I am thrilled that Barclays spotted this as i am very much strapped for cash and if they hadnt noticed i would not have noticed for perhaps a week by which time some cheeky sod could have spent a LOT more money.

I would advise ANYONE to call them back ASAP, i am always weary of these calls but i am very much glad i did.

They asked me no dodgy q's which i was looking out for, never ever tell them any deets til you KNOW who they are. And never tell them your PIN number, even the bank don't know what your PIN number is, its all v confusing but the only person who should know it is YOU not even your bank. If they ask for it, its fraudulent.

This number is genuine, found out money taken from my account on the internet and most of it refunded. called them back and got my card blocked. new card on the way. think my card might have been skimmed at an automated petrol station so ALWAYS cover the key pad or don't use the auto ones.

Yes I also 100% guarantee that this is genuine. Thanks to all these useful posts, I also checked up by ringing Barclays direct on 0845 7555555 and they did confirm they had been trying to ring me.

    The reason?

Might be useful for you Amazon shoppers out there.

It is my daughters birthday soon and I was ordering a number of different CD's and DVD's. However when you choose to have the items posted as and when they are available... Amazon actually process your debit card for every single item.... ie it seems as if you are buying lots of things all separately. hence why Barclays got suspicious.
I for one am pleased that they check this out....

    Hope this helps

This number called me just after I'd made an online transaction with my debit card to a well-known company. I have received an email from the company thanking me for my payment but I will keep an eye on my bank account - just in case.

I had this number phone me every hour from 2pm until 10pm at night (on Sunday).
The automated message said that it was Barclay Fraud Department and asked me to press any number on my phone pad to continue.
I did not do so as I was concerned it may be a scam and went into the bank first thing Monday morning.
Barclays confirmed that their fraud dept does send an automated message and the person has to press a number on the keypad to continue - then go through a variety of security questions before speaking to a real person.
My 'fraud' was I had added a new card (my old one had expried) to the visa verification and created a new password. However, Barclays confirm that they had automatically superceded my details and the old password was still valid, even though it was a new card. I am glad that I did go into the bank, because they gave me the number for 'fraud related issues' - tel. 08003891652. Luckily there wasn't any 'unusual' spending on my account - but I am glad I went in and saw a real person to sort it out.

It is a recorded message from Barclays! I couldn't believe it but I checked with them on a separate number from the website and that is how they get into contact with you!

This is a genuine number. The automated message will ask you to call another 0845 number. When you do  the computerised system will check your personal details and then go through the last five transactions on your account.  Only  if you do not recognise any of them will you be put through to an operator.
