Was called this am 9.45, got completetly garbled message, sounded very much like 4 letters, spoken very quickly. Not bothering to call the 0753 number mentioned to retrieve message. Probably cost small fortune. Advice? ignore them. Number that called me was 08456 021111 incidentally

I've had several calls from this number recently. It's a BT text message service which accepts text messages destined for landlines which do not have text capability. It's got nothing to do with whether the recipient has a BT line or not, it's like you calling someone on a friend's behalf. In this case BT calls the landline on behalf of the texter.

So, it's a genuine service but the users can make it very annoying to be on the receiving end. It could be sales calls, creditors, anything. As it's computer controlled it can be quite insistent on getting the message through. I had one call before I came here and a second just now as I finish typing!

I suspect that in my case, given that I don't answer the phone these days, the caller is using the text service because it will report that the call has been answered. It's an "Ahah, so you *are* at home" device! ;o)

I have just got home to find a missed call from this (08456 021111) number, and being a brave soul, called them back.

I got the BT SMS recorded message. The message I had received told me to call another number urgently, which was somewhat garbled, but it ended saying it was from Nat West Bank, who I have absolutely no dealings with whatsoever, so I wonder if this is turning into a convoluted way to scam people. Needless to say, I didn't make the further call, but I expect it could have told me to enter my card /bank details via the keypad.

We are being plagued by repeated calls from this number this morning. We use our answering machine to filter calls - if a caller does not leave a message, we assume the call is not legitimate. If this is a genuine BT message-relay service, why will it not leave the message on our answering machine? Can only assume it is some sort of scam or sales call.

Got a call from this today. This is indeed BT SMS service. If you call the number it does explain that you can change the times that it will call you.

Don't know what the problem is with some people.  They seem happy to receive texts on their mobile, but for several years you can now receive texts on your landline.  If you have a SMS landline phone, then you receive them as a text, if you don't have a SMS landline phone, then it gets read out to you.  The local authority here have been using the system for years, to confirm appointments and then to inform you they are on the way, we have couriers use them to inform us they are on-route with the delivery.  They can be very useful.  If you don't have a SMS enable landline phone, then they will be send as voice, but you can put a curfew on them, or switch it off - something you can't do with a mobile - how many people would switch SMS on their mobile?  Probably not many as millions are sent each day - yet people moan about SMS on the landline - BT even give you so many free outgoing SMS each month on certain plans.

Keep receiving sms text messages on non text landline.I never answer them I just replace the handset, but they are becoming more frequent and are very annoying. I would be very grateful if you could provide me with an answer to stopping these nuisance calls. Thank you.

People need to realise this is a legit service!! it doesn't matter if your are with BT or not, it is a service that they offer when anybody sends a text to your landline.  also, people who are ex-directory and wonder how they get your number, it is because the person who has text you has your number. it is not BT specifically targeting you!!!! I got a text today from my parents. we use this service often and no it doesn't cost £10 to receive a message.

here's everything you need to know.

    1) the number 08456021111 is BT's text service.
    2) when it calls it will tell that is is BT, read you the number that the message is from, and then you press 1 for it to  read the message to you.
    3) this is a completely FREE service. so answering the call costs you nothing! the only person it charges is the person who sent the text, and i believe it is the cost of a regular text message.
    4) if you miss the call, just call the number back. this is a lo-rate call.
    5) if you don't want to call the number back, then wait and it will call again. (note, your answering machine will not be able to pick up the message because you must press 1 to listen to it).
    6) this service is good to use if you want to text someone at home. just text their landline number.
    7) you can specify the settings by calling 0800-587-5252 (for FREE). you can choose when these calls can be received (a cut off time) and even turn it off, meaning people cannot text your landline (unless you have phones that allow character texts like you receive on a mobile phone).
    8) if you do receive garbled messages, it could be from the wrong number or someone who is texting in text speak (a way that the automated system is unable to read).
    9) if it is a scam txt (from someone you do not know) it is still nothing to do with BT. the message still does not cost you anything, just don't fall for whatever the message says. (it may be a bank you don't have an account with who tells you to call a number. DON'T!!) just ignore the message and if it becomes a regular problem then call 0800-587-5252 (for free) to sort it out.
    10) someone could even submit your landline to text service to receive prank messages (eg, jokes, or adult texts). this happened to my brothers friend (by another one of his friends). once again call 0800-587-5252 (for free). note: this isn't a likely occurrence. it's just people being idiots.

i hope this has answered some of your questions.

This number called at 10.30pm last night (Saturday). Fortunately I did not hear it but other members of my family did. Howeever, as I usually answer the phone nobody else answered it and I was then told that the phone had been ringing when it had stopped. Having dialed 1471, this number came up. As it was 0845, I knew it was naturally just a JUNK call anyway so did not reply. However, to call at 10.30pm is just not on. Is there anybody that this sort of thing can be reported to and ssomethning done about it???
