after reading the comment from Karen I rang the number & it indeed is the BT answering service. I have my phone through Sky so didn't think I'd have this service. It did turn out to be a genuine message from my son, sent on New Year, but had only just got through. There therefore isn't really a problem with this number that I can see, though worried because of the time of the call! (7.11am on New Year's Day).

Curiousity got me and I called the number. Yes, it was bt, but the message was a recording saying happy new year. Now I shall wonder if I've been charged a huge sum for calling back

I was woken on New Years day on my landline at 2.20am!! from 08456 021111 this is unacceptable I neither want texts nor send them, BT should not send messages which are far worse than any other nuisance calls.  I think it is wrong that you can only arrange to have these calls sent to you (calls you do not want at all) within a certain time period as you should be able to block them permanently if you wish!!  It is a disgrace.

I received three calls from 08456021111 this morning 00:47am, 01:18am and 02:49am, I answered none of these calls because I was in bed. I don't dial chargeable calls to 0845 and 0870 numbers, instead I use the services of a website called www.saynoto0870.com which is a user created alternative database of numbers and allows you to input the 0845 or 0870 and provides the user with the geographic number that these virtual chargeable numbers are forwarded to. It works great for numbers of banks, hospitals and shops, etc. Am sure BT management read these messages so they won't approve of this one. TOUGH!!!

    According to www.saynoto0870.com the number 08456021111 is forwarding to a BT Text-to-Voice-on-Landline freephone 0800 587 5252

Just a quick update, can I say thank you to the user who recommended turning off the BT sms facility as below:

"To turn off the BT sms service there is a BT freephone number 0800 587 5252. Choose option 1, then option 5."

What really makes me cross over this is the standard BT option is to receive SMS messages BETWEEN 11pm and 8am. Surely this should be something that we have to manually opt-in for, rather than hunting around the internet for information on how to switch it off?

Someone in BT wants a swift kick up the [***] for this.

Just had one of these calls.
Frankly, I'm getting sick of all these different types of intrusive and unsolicited calls to my home. I never pick up the phone when it rings, instead I 1471 the number and if recognised I will call back, otherwise it remains ignored.  A friend of mine was recieving sms's to his phone, which when recieved cost him 2.50 a time.  he was told by vodaphone that there was nothing he could do to stop these messages even though he recieved 4 in the space of one hour - wiping out his recently topped up credit.

I called several times during the early hours of Thursday morning (1 January 2009). It was from some SMS BT service. I just put the phone down. It was really annoying because the first call was around 2am in the morning. Then I received such calls 2 per hour.
I hope these calls dont continue.
What else can one do, other than informing others on the internet?
    Regards

Its 0100hours (GMT) - I've just been called by 08456021111 (CLI) I dont know who it is but at this time of the days its obviously NOT legitimate. I will program it into my home phone as "DONT ANSWER" ...

I also get LOTS & LOTS & LOTS of calls from 08703330159 ... this one been calling me REGULARLY for past 4 (four) years.  I've ascertained its a DEBT COLLECTION AGENCY (INTRUM JUSTITA - in STRATFORD-upon-AVON).

Have been being plagued by calls from this number throughout New Year's Day - until late into the evening - and again on 2nd January. We never answer the phone unless we know who is calling - if it was a legitimate call we would expect a message to be left on our answering machine. We never use text messages, so if these calls have something to do with those, they are unwanted by us.

I received a phone call from this number at 3.15 am New Years Day, very annoyed as at this time of the morning was asleep.  As I'm not with BT so cannot be a BT service!!

    Just contacted BT about this.
These calls can be permanently blocked by calling 0800 587 5252 and then choosing options 1 and 5!

Just received a robotic message saying someone was trying to contact me by SMS and asked me to press 3 to receive it. Not knowing everyone's numbers without looking them up and thinking one of the kids could be in trouble, I pressed 3 and it was a lunatic cake recipe! Just listened to the first 3 ingredients and slammed the phone down. Can't think of anyone I know who would be contacting me like this. It stinks of a scam to me. We are keeping the details to check against the phone bill. Someone needs to be locked up.

Just had one of these calls, even though I am with Virgin Media.  The message said "thank you for applying for a loan".  I immediately cut it off as I was suspicious, but these forum replies so far have been very helpful, allowing me opt out.

Very annoyed that it's a BT service, and I am NOT on BT though.  Plus, I haven't applied for a loan!
