It's just a way of retreiving SMS phrough your landline. The service is run by BT as they own all the exchanges etc even if you are on NTL or another provider. There is often a long delay in receiving the message after sending which is why it can ring you at some odd hours. It will tell you the number of the (mobile) phone that it originated from and you can work out from that who sent the text. This is NOT a scam however it might be possible for a scamming company to text you and ask you to ring a premium rate number but as long as you stay away from 090...... then you will be fine.

The phone has been ringing every 15 mins for the last hour, all from the same number. I read this page and decided to phone it back. It was a message from a friend however am not keen on this service and won't be answering or calling back again.

i just had a call from this number infact i had them all week at various times between 3pm and 9pm. They read out a message that is totally nothing to do with me and apprently i can press 9 to stop these calls and have my number taken off the list ive done this when they called but they still keep calling me.

The money-making scam here is that if you are out and miss the call (or switch off the phone to avoid be wakened) then you have to PAY to receive the message. Receiving messages should be FREE. There should be an 0800, not an 0845, number for retrieving missed messages.

The service number 0800 587 5252 only allows you to choose receiving calls at these times:
1. Any time
2. 0900-2100
3. 0800-2300
4. 0600-0000
5. No time

The service would be better if it displayed the Caller ID of the original SENDER of the text. Then - knowing who is contacting you - you can either answer the call and have the text message read out to you or call them back and talk to them!

1 call at 10:30pm last night. 1 at 05:00 this morning, and another at 08:00 !!

Its BT msgin service...someone sends you a msg to your house fone instead of ya mobile!!

Expecting delivery this weekend and the same number rang, when rung back was B&Q confirming the delivery. Definately a legitimate SMS service as ordered in store, i am not on BT either!!

This number called 3 times now in half hour.. If it wasnt for the fact im trying to avoid an Ex's calls i would have answered it! But as i dont know it im glad i haven't especially after reading the stuff on this page!

been called twice today within 10 mins of eachother and in the past had a call at 2am which made me very nervous, thinking someone was watching the house or something. I hate these calls in the day as I'm usually on my own and I'm pregnant. Our phone is downstairs and I have to keep going down the stairs to answer pointless sh*tty phonecalls.As soon as I hear an automated message I put the phone down. We are not BT and do not need these disturbances.

i got the a voice text saying they sleep with my mum every week from this number.

What's the point of this.  I got a call, rang back and it said I had "no voicemail messages"

If its a messaging system..... how do I try to pick up the message without waiting for another call?

Confusion over, connection just didnt work the first time.

Def a message system, silly boyfriend obv sent the text to the home phone instead of mobile.

Been called by this number today didnt answer it and had a look on here, it then rang back so picked it up and its a sms service from BT nothing to worry about, it will keep ringing untill you hear the message.

hi just recived a call from this number at 22.19pm!!!! i let the phone ring then dialed 1471....this number came up so i called it back. It said this is a BT sms service, i have one message. Message said "scientist have found a new drug for depressed lesbians"!!!!!!
Hung the phone right up LMAO

Pipex are leaving messages all the time from this number telling me to ring them urgently as there is a problem with my telephone service !  I left them last May and only had Broadband not telephone !

To turn off the BT sms service there is a BT freephone number 0800 587 5252. Choose option 1 then option 5. this is the way to turn off the sms system sending messages to your number. it worls and is free phone .
