There are some companies that will use their pay pal account to get some money from you legitimately.

For example. You go to a swap meet, purchase an item with your credit card, and they write the info down on paper (or even run it through one of those old imprinters.)

This company or person is too small to qualify or afford a merchant account. Merchant accounts are expensive many times costing over $100 a month plus transactions fees, plus setup fees, plus... (you get the idea.) For a small timer selling home made knitting socks it is just too much.

Rather, they go home, and use their pay pal account to "request" money from you, but put their email address (not yours) in the request.

Later, they get the request and an option to pay the request using a credit card. They type in your credit card number, (the 3 digit number on the back of the card is needed as well as your full address.)

You never see the transaction except it shows up on your statement a month later.

While this does not feel right, It seems like a way to bypass some fraud safeguards, remember, you did give you card to the merchant and did purchase something.

Keep an eye on the transaction, and if you feel ripped off, go ahead and report it. You may have to look through your receipts and match the dollar amount to remind yourself you actually did buy something.

I had a charge on my account from Oct. with this Paypal info and phone # on the line item.  I called the phone # and got Brian ID #78778 (not that it's a real id #).  He stated that he worked for eBay and that they couldn't link the last 4 digits of the cc # with a pay pal account.  I said that's because we don't have a pay pal account and we don't buy on eBay.  He too asked for my entire account #, so I followed that call with a call to the credit card and asked them to get me a new card # immediately.  We have had three cards compromised this year and we are VERY careful!

I recently ordered Rosetta stone V3, levels 1,2,and 3, which I purchased for only $168.00 via paypal. Part of me said that this price was too good to be true but I went ahead and bought it. I saw this same number on my credit card invoice and decided to look it up on google. After reading so many negative comments I became paranoid that I had been scammed. So I kept watching my credit card info for any oddities. I also watched the caller ID on my phone. Fortunately, I received no weird phone calls. This morning, to my surprise, 7-10 business days later, I am happy to say that I received my Rosetta stone!! All the correct pieces were included, and I even tested it out. Everything came and works as it should. Best wishes to all those concerned individuals!

I got an automated call from this number claiming to be from paypal asking me to press "one" to speak w/ an operator and verify transaction information. This was weird to me because I cancelled by paypal and ebay accounts over a month ago because for the third time in 5 years my accounts were hacked and money was taken out. I thought this may be related to that, so I pressed "one" but instead of a live operator the automatation told me to call an "800" number. Which I didn't.

I called the number on paypal's website instead and they told me my account was closed, the investigation was all over and they had no need to contact me. She told me people often call trying to get people's Paypal acct info from them over the phone and that this was a scammer.

My bank account, which was in no way associated with my Paypal account, had the following debit:

    DDA PURCHASE 01/04 20:13 PAYPAL *SHIPENG89 4029357733 CA PAYPAL *SHIPENG8   75.00

I called 402-935-7733.  I talked with an agent of Paypal.  Reluctantly, I gave them my bank account number at their request.  They found the transaction, already had it listed as possibly fraudulent (supposedly...so they claimed that while the money had been taken from my bank account, it was being held by Paypal), and had me hold for an account specialist.

After a long wait, the account specialist came on the line and acted like he had none of the information that I provided to the guy before him.  I had to again give him my bank account information.  He said that someone probably wrote down my debit card number when I was at a restaurant or store, then they turned around and used it online to make a purchase.  Basically, he said that I would get my money back but that I should cancel/change my debit card with my bank.  The account specialist was very nice. I just hope he was legit!

Someone created a Yahoo! email account with my name and charged $230 through PayPal to my personal credit card information. I still had my cards and can only assume the numbers were phished from online purchases. My credit card company and PayPal credited back my account and I am still in the process of getting Yahoo! to delete the fradulent email account. The number was associated with the fradulent charges and the name of the company was "PayPal *D2JSP".

I did not receive a call from PayPal.  I called PayPal regarding a charge on my account.  Someone put a $40 donation onto someone's "brain cancer web site" without our consent.  Not sure how this could happen, but it did.
CHECK YOUR STATEMENTS every month.  This transaction did not show up on PayPal, only on AmEx bill.
PayPal was basically helpful, and we are setting up a dispute.

I recieved a charge for an *instant wow website.  I called the number and was told it was paypal and the charge would be reversed.  It was never reversed had to go through my bank.  I don't think this (402-935-7733) is a legitimate paypal number.  Either that or the person I talked to was in on the scam to steal money.

All they have to do is know your email address - then they can charge you PayPal account whatever amount they like whenever they like  -that's what’s wrong with PayPal I got an email from something that called itself PayPal wanting me to verify my account but the address wasn't for ‘PayPal.com’ so I deleted and blocked the email.  I went out on the real PayPal to find 3 transactions on Feb 5th - 2 for $1 each then on for $20 it seems that they were 'testing' the water so to speak.  Now I look on my bank account and sure enough there is $22 missing.  I filed a complaint regarding fraud to PayPal, but all they did was wait 24 hours then sent me a note saying there was insufficient data to back up the unauthorization and they were going to let the charges stay.  WHAT A RIP OFF!!!  Now I’ll file a complaint with the BBB on both PayPal and then company that ripped me off – RockYou.com.
