- Jian replies to Marsha IddingsI got the same thing happen to me too. Thanks for sharing your story. Saved me sometime from calling them.
- FraudBusterI verified with the bank that the number is not valid - a phishing scam. Third call I received in the last month, all claiming to be from different banks.
The fake shill postings claiming the number is genuine look like other shill postings for various other banks - very obviously fake:

- Rales| 1 replyIt is legit - but call them back from the number on your card just to be safe...
- RandomPerson replies to RalesI was concerned and so I called the number on the back of my card instead of the 386 number. As I had called from my cell, they asked if they could call me back on my home number, and when they did, it showed the 800-386-6624, and they were calling about a suspicious charge. They were able to tell me about other recent charges on my account, including those made today that haven't even posted. I don't see how anyone other than the bank could do that.
I also confirmed this by logging in to my account online (not using the provided link, but using my longstanding bookmark). When I logged in, right on the landing page there was red text asking me to contact customer service about a suspicious charge.
So, with the jury on this page evenly split and no reason to believe me any more than anyone else, I suggest you log in to your account and verify yourself that there is an issue, and then call the number on the back of your card.
Good luck. - gj @acomputerproThis is definitely CitiBank outbound Fraud Alert calling. I too verified the number. Someone had created a fake card using my account number and physically presented it to a grocery store in South Africa. I am in the USA with the real card in hand.
It's sad that idiots like FraudBuster and others are passing bad info in this forum. You can research my credentials by going to my Twitter account or viewing my website at acomputerpro.com

- JTSmith replies to Jonny T.Jonny T., you are correct it was not a scam for me either. However, after reading several post, I went ahead and called the number on the back of my card and not the number on the text that I received.
I was hesitate at first. I first checked online and saw no activity but wanted to test this because I had used the card for hotel reservations and Ticketmaster earlier the same day.
Well, as soon as I entered my credit card number when I called, the message immediately told me that there was some questionable activity that they needed to verify with me. The asked for pertinent security information to make sure that I was the owner of the card and then proceeded to tell me the items that appeared questionable and that I needed to verify and approve them.
So, this was a lesson for me. I would have normally ignored the message thinking that it was truly a fraud. But for me it was not. The charges where valid but the hotel reservation broke the charges out into 3 different charges and it appeared to the credit card company as a questionable item.
So, my recommendation is call the number on the back of your card. - mxbagOK-I answered the call after the 5th time having read some of these posts and it is legit. I made an error earlier today at a gas pump when I entered my zip code because the keypad on the Gas pump stuck. I cancelled the transaction, but they thought it was a stolen credit card. They knew the correct amount and I verified the amount. I am glad they contacted me.
- Caller: Citibank
- AmandaGot two texts asking to confirm a recent purchase, claimed to be citi bank fraud department. They also called three times and didn't leave a message. I called the number and entered an "incorrect" pin number (not the pin number listed in my text messages) several times until it finally directed me to an operator. The FIRST question out of the girl's mouth, "Can I have your credit card number please". YEAH RIGHT, I said, "um...NO" and she said, "Okay maam, please call the number on the back of your card and they can help you with anything".
SCAM.- Caller: Scam - claims to Citi Bank
- CJBI received a text message claiming to be from Citi Cards asking me if I made a charge. After that I've been receiving several calls from this 8003866624 number and they don't leave a message. The thing is, I DON'T HAVE A CITI CARD or ANY credit card for that matter.
- ErikaThis is not a scam. I recieved a sms saying they were trying to verify a charge & received a phone call about 5 minutes later, which I did not answer. Searched the number & found this page so I was a little suspicious after reading all the comments from people claiming it was a scam and it was not. I do not and have never had a Citibank account. So I called the number back provided in the sms, I told them I was calling because I received the sms and that I did not have a Citibank acct, guy asked my name and phone number and said they must of had the wrong number and that they would remove my number from the acct. Never asked any personal information and he was extremely nice. If it was a scam I'm sure they wouldn't have been so nice & would have tried to get personal info.

- cuty replies to Citi_Customer| 1 replythey can make the phone number appears as a legitimate #
- FastTheo replies to cutyI just received an email with this phone number today, and after verifying with CitiCards (via the number on the back of the card), this is indeed a legitimate fraud department phone number.
- mebuffThis is legitimate. I too called the number on the back of one of my Citi cards and it immediately went over to the fraud department where they said they had detected a potential fraudulent entry. So it's worth checking out but I would call the number on the back of one of your cards just to be sure, cuz they can also verify that you are calling from the account holders phone number.
- Susan in New HampshireThis was a legitimate inquiry from Citibank.
I received the letter from citicards@info3.citibank.com with the message to call them at 1-800-386-6624. I asked questions and was told by a very polite person about the potential fraud. I hung up, Googled the phone number, and read this blog. Thank you to those who posted the very wise advice to simply call the number on the back of my credit card. That's what I did and within a few moments we verified that there was a fraudulent attempt to use my card to charge $1.76 allegedly at a hotel in Rochester, New York.
Apparently those committing fraud make a small purchase to test if the charge goes through, and if it does, they charge more. Citibank immediately closed my account and will issue a new card for me. To remove all doubt in such a situation, call the company at one of thier officially listed numbers (in this case, the number on the back of my Citibank credit card).- Caller: Citibank, N.A. Customer Service
- CJThis is not a scam - but I'm with everyone else who says NEVER call the number left on your machine. I called the number on the back of my card, and just found out that my card has been the subject of fraud.
However, I say SHAME ON CITI CARD. Why they ask you call a number that no-one can readily confirm is there's is ignorant. In fact, I'd guess for a lot of people who do call the number back, this will give them more confidence to think the next voicemail they get is also legit, when it may not be.
Again, SHAME on Citi - why on earth can they not ask you to call the number that they publish on the back of their card OR the number for fraud that they publish on their website. Unbelievable. Having said that, I do have to thank Citi for looking out for us - they did just save me several hundred dollars and an untold future amount of fraud since we shut the account down within hours.- Caller: Citi
- ralph replies to Jonny T.This is legit. I just received a message in my phone. I called the number on my card, and the Citi representative confirmed that they had contacted me and given me a different number to call. Fraudulent transactions were charged to my card. They removed them. This alarmingly happened with my former Citi card that this one replaced - just three weeks ago. Better luck this time.
- mikeAll legit for me.
I'm wondering what the experiences were of all the people who are swearing this is a scam. Last night I got a text from this number alerting me of strange charges. I ignored it and about 10 minutes later I got a call from the same number saying they were from the Citicards Fraud dept. They alerted me to some charges I didn't make from that same day, and also knew about a bunch of charges I did make, going all the way back to May. At not point did they ask for any portion of my card number, or social security. And the girl basically urged me to call the seller with the wrong charge and see what was up. I checked my online account and didn't see any charges, but there was an alert saying to get a hold of CitiCards.
Anywho it was late, so I went to bed, and the this morning called the vendor and they didn't have a record of any charges, basically because Citi put a hold on them so fast. Then I called the number on the back of my card, and they confirmed all the info from my call last night and long story short, I'm getting a new card and the charges were taken off.
So tldr, this number is legit. It's always best to call the number on the back of your card to confirm, but don't ignore the texts and calls outright. - Shima| 1 replyI did not answer the call but there was an automated message. The message sought verify that I had recently made some changes. It seemed pretty legit. It did not leave a number to call back but if I didn't make changes to call Citi.
- Caller: CitiBank
- Shima replies to ShimaThey asked to call the number on the back of the card. In any event you should just do that if you are in doubt.
- Seems LegitI was concerned when I read these reviews, as I just activated a new Citicard. I checked the voicemail. It was an automated message that included my name and said that they call to confirm account changes. They were confirming I had registered for online access (I did yesterday) and that if I had NOT done so, to call the number on the back of my credit card to speak to a representative.
