bad guys can make the wrong number shows up on your phone,the number is actually ssa but  people are being scammed.
call the ssa number. you'll get a recording but you can get someone to talk to and ask them to confirm whats going on.

This IS Social Security, I use this number all the time in my job duties.

Thank you. My older mother just got a bill in the mail with this number for Medicare, which she does not even have.

Because the SSA would never phone you. They everything via postal mail or their website.

Don't mislead people who come in here. You are a disservice to them (or possibly the scammer).

Part of the scammers con is to spoof phone numbers. For those who are unaware, what that means is that the correct phone number will show up on your caller ID, here the SSA. But "underneath" and hidden behind that number is the caller's real number they are calling from.

By the way, computer software to spoof numbers (any number the caller/scammer wants to show on your caller ID) costs about $25. And on Android, for example, apps that spoof your phone number (e.g. the "fake caller ID" category) cost $1.99 I can buy that app, look up the local FBI phone number, enter that into the app, and 2 minutes from now show up on your phone as getting a call from the FBI.

Keep that in mind when you are so ready to give out your SSN because "well, I read on a site that that is the SSA number" and that it may well be the number.

Back up a minute people. If you initiate a call to the SSA (and their number 800-772-1213 IS a legitimate SSA phone number) then you can rest assured you are talking to SSA!  It's when THEY call YOU that you need to be wary.  You can't be afraid to call a legitimate SSA number.

Two messages left on our company voicemail box.  A robotic voice said (approximately) "An error has occurred.  We will call back in ten minutes."  If this is actually from the SSA, I don't know why they're calling a business's phone.

Received an email.stating that I had requested a password change for my online account.  Gave the number to call back during regular business hours.  After reading all the comments, I am sure it is a scam.  But Zi will call back later today just to make sure without giving them any personal info. So scared that these people prey on us.

Caller said I was to get an extra $95 dollars from Social Security.  I said I would contact Social Security and check.  He gave me a number for SSA.  I checked on line and in the phone book, and found the number (800-772-1213) was the same.  The person I talked with checked and said the only extra for 2017 was the same as the amount (not $95) as has been advertised by the SSA already.  The call was probably a scam.

Just checked my phone after calling ssn twice today & saw this unanswered phone number 800-772-1213 on caller ID.  Glad I checked this page before calling them back.  As I called them, I feel confident about talking to them today.  I don't give out anything over the phone

I answered and a voice said hold on there is static on the line.  So I hung up.

Just gave them my information is this a legitimate number?

I will have people call in to use his check for $50.00, a safe-arbor credit union check in Ludington, Michigan 49431. I put the amount on the check and told them to call social security 18007721213 for social security approval. They will cash it rate away at a social security bank.

man called and ask for my SS#.  I gave it to him, but got suspicious and hung up!

I just received a call from 1-800-772-1213 they actually left a voicemail.  The name he left was Gilbert said he was from sea and was returning my call.
I never called them and I don't give out personal information on the phone..
The caller ID said unknown.. there's a hint to never answer.

This is legit. # for Soc.Sec.Adm. Got a call w/message to call a a diff.# (“Workload Center”) to verify earnings record to finish processing my application. Called both numbers after hours & listened to the messages to verify. Only had to give my name when I called him right back today, & yes, poor guy has a verrry strong accent, but so did the woman at the Social Security Office where I applied. I know it’s hard to know whether to trust because they always say “No one will call you from SSA” but then when you get your copy of appl. & e-mail they both state someone may call you to verify info.
