I was talking to my disability attorney at 9:30, and got a call from this number at 9:50, so it seems like it could have been a legitimate call from SSA. Except that I didn't answer, they didn't leave a message, and haven't called back. Nor has my attorney.

It seems too much of a coincidence that those two calls would come 20 minutes apart, but certainly they would leave a message or call back later. 🤔

Reading posts back to 2008, I would assume the number is both safe and unsafe.

The number is posted on the SSA website AND numbers and names that show in your Caller ID can be spoofed. SSA and Medicare numbers/names are popular with scammers, so be VERY careful about calls from this number. I see posts have been removed in this thread and that suggests that scammers have been sending shills here to support this scam.

In your matter, if you have a case open with SSA, you should have the contact info you need to call to see if they have been trying to reach you.

Social Security does NOT give out this info.  Don't be fooled by these scammers.  They can cause social security number to appear on your phone when they call you.  Your birthday is all over the internet, as is your phone number and other information.  They can't scam you if you don't answer the phone.  If it's legit, they will leave a message.
