Did not receive a call from this person, but rec'd, word-for-word as you all have rec'd, an e-mail from David Clarke, purporting to work for Wesses Survey & Design, Ltd., soon to work for Black & Veatch.   I Google'd the company, of course, and noticed that he lifted, word for word, their self-description.  

I'm beginning to think that there is nobody out there interested in in renting our place except for scam artists.

He is now going by Brian Keane.  He emailed me through Craig's List to rent an apartment.  It's the same scam.  How is he still getting away with this?

No calls, because I included my e-mail address on the Craigslist posting.
Before we realized it was a scam, I'd given one guy my sister's name and address (she is the home owner).   Now, I'm scared to death that someone is going to steal her identity and do something that will endanger the only thing she has - the house.  I am sick at heart.

Sure enough, two days later, I got the e-mail from "David Clarke", but had the wits about me to now start checking - Google'd "Wessex Survey" and came up with you all.

I wish there was a way to list the scam stories on Craigslist so we could put the names and cover stories out there for all to see easily.

The one guy who said "the Cashier's Check is on the way" - I sent him a terse e-mail yesterday, stating we'd decided to look for other interested parties and to have his company cancel the check.

Part of me wants him to show up on our doorstep next week, as he said he was arriving the 5th of May, just so I can have the pleasure of calling the police, who are aware of him and his scam attempt.

I am so angry, so scared and feel that our privacy has been violated.

I apparently am the most recent to have communications with this individual.  First he went by the name Lewis Ewer and after I stated that I wanted to do a background check and I needed a SSN (even if from the UK, if he is working in the states and paying taxes, he would need one) to do a background check.  From there, I recently received the Albert Keane persona.  Strange that so many people have been antagonized by this clown and nothing has happened yet...

Y'all beware of wolves in sheep's clothing.  This jerkwad tried to scam me about a rental property I have in Big D on Craigslist.  He's going by the name of Peter Mervyn, a Civil Engr. with the Balfour Group (formerly Centex Construction). He name-dropped the CEO and a ficticious character named Andy Rose and the phone number for the company was a fax line.  I personally hope he and "his precious family" burn in Hell.

No phone call, but an identical email regarding one of our rentals from a Dave Clarke???  Not sure how it scams but will not take it seriously.

Calling himself Goerge Fernandez - using Black & Veatch Chief Financial Officer - Karen Daniel - as a reference. Same story as the others almost exactly just looks like he got a new phone number (Kerrville, Texas - looked it up on www.phonenumbers.addresses.com).  Says he is an engineer relocating for 1 year from UK to US.  Wants to know requirements to secure the rental property (listed on Craigslist) and will send cashiers check, wants dimensions of the rooms to arrange furniture,yatta, yatta. One thing he slipped up on is in one email he says moving with his wife and in another he says moving with "precious family".  I have contacted Black & Veatch (specifically their CFO he used as a reference) to let them know he is using their company name and personnel names to assist him in scamming people. I really hope someone gets this guy.  I have saved my email correspondence with him just in case.

This is what the police department recommended to check on potential renters or whatever you need to check on to be secure in your choice.

Here is some more really helpful information from someone re scammers and this scammer in particular.  I got a kick out of this persons suggestions (2nd one :)) on what to do with the check should i receive it.  Interesting that this scammer (and apparently most of them) is in Nigeria but the cell # is in the states. Clever little minds eh? I've done some research on this stuff since he attempted to scam ME.

Excerpt from the email:
This scammer is writing to you from an Internet Cafe in Lagos Nigeria. If he writes again simply and politely reply telling him that  you no longer wish to go along with the deal.

He has no interest in whatever was being advertised, and nobody will be calling.  He wanted to send you a (counterfeit) cheque for far more than you were expecting and  hoped that you would cash it, and send  his non-existent shipping company a large portion of the money before your own bank realised that the cheque was bad.


If you do receive  a cheque from him. The way I see it you will  have  three main options:-  
•    Take the cheque and any packaging to your local police and file a report, although they won't do much with it unless you have lost  money in the scam .... although the Postal Inspector (if you are in the USA) would be interested.  
•    Write "Fake" over the front of it and stick it on your office wall as a memento.
•    Rip it up and bin it.

If you don't go for the first option I'd go for the second option ..... it makes a good talking point when you have friends around. :-)
 
Then write to him and tell him that you tried to bank the cheque and the bank told you that it was fake. You might want to add that you were arrested and spent two nights in the cells for attempted fraud !
