Because Telmate is a well known company that handles inmate accounts and phone calls. Generally they'll let you talk to whoever is calling for a minute or two for free before asking for credit card info. You might not realize you know anyone in jail but they likely were just arrested and booked in before calling

It really is someone in jail though. That number is Telmates number, they manage inmate accounts and phone calls for jails and prisons across the country. You can have calls blocked by calling them back but you may want to figure out who you know got arrested

I just recieved a call from this number and i dont know anyone in jail. It's a scam!

I got this call at 10pm last night, 4:58 & 7 this morning. I don’t know who could be calling me from a correctional facility. I checked in my adult kids, (of course it wasn’t them).

received two calls from this number back to back. No one has my cell number but immediate family and they are not in jail.

A call from this number means that an inmate that knows you is trying to reach you and you should answer it because they are only given one free call.  After that you will need to set up an account with a credit card. They service multiple jails in different counties.

I received a call from a jail facility this morning asking if I would accept a collect call from an inmate. I hung up and googled the number. I called back and 3 inmates have my number! I do not know anyone in jail or anyone that has ever been in jail. They had my number blocked for me. Thanks Jackie, i was skeptical.

I got a phonecall from an inmate asking why I had  there phone number and I have been paying for this number for like 5 months now and want my number taken off the list.

I'm out of town and missed 2 calls but have no idea who was calling me or which county facility they came from.

I received a call from this number... the message was in Spanish, unfortunately, I don't speak or understand Spanish.

I got 13 calls within 3 hours last evening  with voice msgs left because I didn't answer. They have started again today. I tried to block the number. It doesn't ring but I get a voice mail left. You must give us your debit or cc number to receive any more calls from this inmate!

My son -in-law is currently incarcerated. These calls I received are from him.

I didn't answer the call but I searched the number. I called Telmate and they gave me the name of the inmate who called. The person was a complete stranger to me. Telmate said that they blocked the number so the inmate could not call me again. This was not a friend or relative. It was a random call looking for money for this person's commissary account. I wouldn't answer a call from this number unless you know who it's from before you accept it. It involves a VERY expensive collect call.
