I have just finished dealing with "American Agencies" (I hope I have finished with them.) They called for a while a few years ago, the "company" is a debt collecting outfit that tries to collect on expired debts (debts that have passed their statute of limitations). At least that was my case. I had an unpaid phone bill from 1999 (long story), suffice it to say I will never pay that bill for a reason. The bill has already been posted to my credit, and has finally dropped off after the seven year limit. Now they start calling again claiming it is still a "valid and open account". Oh and the amount keeps going up, probably for interest or something. The important thing to remember is that since the bill is past its statute of limitations, I am no longer legally obligated under U.S. law to pay them anything, regardless of what they claim. Also, because the old bill has passed its 7 year limit on credit reporting, they cannot legally report this on my credit anymore. I would usually call them back and cuss at them to blow off steam like the other guy said, but then I got tired of getting the calls every day at my parents' house and on my cell, so I did some research and it seems that under the "Fair Debt Collection Practices Act", they cannot even call you once you tell them not to. So I waited for them to call again and when they did I called back and demanded to speak to a supervisor. I then proceeded to inform him very loudly and over the top of whatever he was trying to say to me about this fraudulent debt that because the debt had passed its statute of limitations I was no longer obligated under US law to pay them a thing, because it was over seven years they could not report it on my credit and they could not sue me, and that under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act it was illegal for them to call me and harass me everyday, and if they continue I can legally take them to small claims court where I live. The gentleman got quiet for a moment and then informed me very politely that he would make sure that these calls stopped, and told me to have a nice day.  I got most of my information from financial guru Clark Howard's website, www.clarkhoward.com    Just search for "collection  agency" on there. Sorry for the long post but I am proud of my triumph over these criminals.

When I answer the phone, nobody is there. When I let the machine pick up, a message asks me to return the call to Mary. I have not called back. They are calling both of my phone lines, several times per day.

"American Agencies", @ 1-877-728-8912, is obviously a crooked, devious, fraudulent entity, phishing for suckers.  They should be reported at the federal and state levels, for criminal activity.

They left an automated message with just the 877-728-8912 number, every day for eight days. I finally called them and they, (i.e. he said his name was "Robbie" --- probably because he robs people), stated my phone number, asking me if it was correct.  I said yes.
Then they stated a name, and asked me if it was my name; I did not answer this question, which they asked repeatedly.
I asked them several times what they wanted, but they claimed they could not divulge that "private information", unless I stated that I was the person they were naming to me.
I had guessed that they were a "collection agency", (although they never admitted that), and I finally informed them with some anger that I do not owe anything to anyone.
I TOLD THEM TO NEVER CALL ME AGAIN.  THIS SEEMS TO BE THE "SECRET FORMULA" TO STOP THEM FROM CALLING YOU, SINCE THAT IS THE LEGAL PRMISE UPON WHICH YOU CAN "GET THEM", LATER.  I THINK MOST PEOPLE FORGET TO SIMPLY TELL THEM TO NEVER CALL YOU AGAIN.

I think most people forget to:
Simply tell them, (in no uncertain terms), to never call you again.

After numerous messages I decided to call the number back.  When I did a lady with a heavy accent put me on hold. I hung up fearing a huge phone bill.

I get the same call every single day from a woman named "Amber".  They are trying to tell me I owe them money for an upaid Pacific Bell bill back in 1996. I called PacBell now AT&T and asked them to look up my records.  They have no records stating that I owe any money.  The bill from American Agencies shows an interest rate/late fee of $900. I requested that American Agencies send me a bill.  Now they have my address.  I know for a fact that I do not owe them any money because I have since bought a house and had all my debt cleared.  This is a company trying to scam people.  I've learned to just let my answering machine pick up the phone.  Although I may start picking it up and just hanging up on them.  They might get the hint then.

What is it with AA and unpaid OLD phone bills that i(we) never received?  It seems that this is a really fishy practice.  Pinnacle (a different company) tried to collect this bill 2 years ago and I cleared it up with them at that time.  AA said that they had mailed me a bill a week ago. Never received it. They kept asking for the last 4 digits of my SSN so they would verify who I was.  I said no.  Then they wanted to verify the first 3 digits.  They read them off and they were off one digit.  The statute of limitations has run out for a final phone bill.  I told them to take me off their call list and never call again.  They were very high-handed and manipulative.  How many people get taken by them and pay up before they even know what's hit them?

    Fed Up!!!
All it will take is a regulatory investigation into this collection agencies extremely questionable business practices to get this company to stop!
The best venue for complaint is the FTC(Federal Trade Commission). Their job is to ensure American consumers aren't rip'd off.
Here's a link to their complaint form which specifically relates to collection agencies and the dishonest tactics they often employ:

I received a message to call American Agencies at this number.  I called it and a very nice young man with a foreign accent asked me my name.  I said, "You tell me, I'll give you my phone number."  He said ok and said he did see where they had tried to contact Sammy at my number.  I told him I did not know anyone by that name.  He also gave me the last name and I still did not recognize it.  He was very nice and said he would remove my number before I got a chance to tell him to do so.  I changed my phone number a few weeks ago so I'm guessing this must be the person who had the number before.  I entered my new number on the do not call registry when I first got it, but it takes up to 90 days to take effect.

I told them it was not my bill and hung up on them.

    Hit 'em where it hurts
Accounts over 7 years old fall off the credit report. No need to pay these bloodsuckers!
Their questionable business practices should be investigated.
Use the link below to the Fair Trade Commission... If enough complaints are generated, maybe they'll quit harassing us!!!

Choose "No" when asked regarding Theft of Identity. Then choose regarding collections. Finally, choose "debt not with original creditor".

These 3rd party collections scumbags need to know they can't get away with this!!!
