    What to do

If you get phone calls from any of these numbers (866) 905-8941...(800) 876-5481...(888) 272-5543...(317) 578-6000...they are all related to collecting debt on student loans. Two of these numbers have been calling my home 4-5 times a day everyday for months. My husband answers the  phone and either gets dead air or a computerized message saying "Sorry we have missed you (ummm you didn't miss us morons my husband is on the phone saying Hello) please call ******* regarding your student loan." What student loan? We don't have a student loan. My daughter is still in public High School.

Now here is how you get them....If you have selective call forwarding from your phone service provider, add all of these numbers too it and then put a number they are going to be forwarded to a shut down business. When one of these numbers calls your house their call will be forwarded to a shut down business and the robot dialer will get beeps and the message the phone number you are trying to call has been disconnected. From my understanding when the robot gets the beeps it takes your phone number off the dialer. I have done this and I have not received my usual 8am call from USA Funds which is one of the above numbers. If they catch on which I highly doubt since it isn't a live person, and they decide to call from another number I will then forward that number to the Attorney Generals office and let them deal with them LOL.

They were calling me around 8am every morning. I called back told them they had the wrong number.
Asked me if I knew this person. I informed them of FTC rules on calling before 9 am and after 9 pm. trying to collect a debt. Even though I didn't know the person, they can't harass me to contact her. I informed them that I had enough calls to constitute harassment and they remove my number from their list.

I have had some exchanges with Sallie Mae reps who are very helpful and will continue to work with them (I have their numbers and extensions).   Lately someone with an Indian accent who identifies himself as John Dickenson has been calling and has been threatening.  Next time I call my "regular" account manager, I am def going to complain.
To the comment "pay your bill, slacker,"  I am doing the best I can --making payments and intend to pay off my child's college debt, which I cosigned for.  Unfortunately, the other parent--I am divorced-- makes no effort to help with the loan.

This is an automated message from Sallie Mae.  When you answer the phone, it says something to the effect of: "Sallie Mae has important information for Bradley Adwell (not me).  Please call us at 888-272-5543."  I have tried to press "0" and nothing happened.

They call a MINIMUM of two times daily EVERY day!

My phone number is on the National Do-Not-Call Registry as of 08/08/2012 and I have reported them to the FCC and yet they STILL call.  I'm just going to start calling them every time they call and maybe it will stop.

Gotta love getting a re-generated phone number that previously belonged to a delinquent child molester.  How nice.

If you don't have an account with them and you can't get them to stop... you can file a complaint with the FCC.  The FCC has an online form than can be used... just follow the directions and do anything they want you to before filling out the form.  Eventually they will stop calling.  Not a quick method, but effective.

Just remember that this only works if you don't have an account with them.

Kaye you have provided some very helpful information. It has been a living nightmare dealing with calls back-2-back. I do have a questions that you may or may not be able to help and I hope someone els would be able to address.  I was thinking about a student loan consolidation, have you or anyone...do you have any situations to share, or do you recommend or not recommend getting involved with a student loan consolidation company.  What I read online is that the loan consolidation will reduce your overall payment up to 60%, lower your payments, etc., etc., etc., but they do not reveal "what's wrong with this picture, i.e the damage this process could cause you in the long run."  Does anyone have information they want to share, is anyone using a student loan consolidation company, and if so, how is that working out and would you recommend that company.

Been getting the same phone calls as everyone else - Sallie Mae, not for anyone in our house, etc.  phone number is legitimately to Sallie Mae.  phone center is clearly out of the country as phone reps are speaking as if they only have a script to work from.  Took me 20 minutes including hold time but - they found our phone number attached to my wife's loans.  Said this was true but that the phone call mentioned someone else's name (do your best to determine what name is being said as they will ask for that).  phone rep I had couldn't get off the part of the script where they want to verify my wife's account number.  I wouldn't give it, insisted that she search for the phone number.  When she was "unable to", I insisted on getting a supervisor.  While on hold she was able to find an account with a name that sounded close to the person's name in the message.  Phone rep said she would stop the phone calls coming under that person's name and that it should happen in 24 to 72 hours.  We'll see if this actually works.....

Just received a call from there recording.  Called back immediately they are closed.  They wanted me to leave my SSN no way.  They threaten me with screwing up my credit they did that last month even though they said missed only one payment.  but 60 days late so I am still doing the math as that means 2 payments.  So the next step I guess is send goons to beat me up or knock me off.  They are wrong but I am a middle class citizen and they are rich corporation it is a no win situation for the middle class.

My ex-husband got a message from this number, supposedly Sallie Mae looking for me, but the funny thing was they mentioned a last name that I haven't used for 20 years.  I called them and asked what they wanted.  He wanted my account or social security number.  I said no.  He asked about my sister (who also has a Sallie Mae account).  Well, if it was truly Sallie Mae, they know where my sister is, plus they would know my updated phone number.  I told the guy I was not giving him any information about my sister.  I hung up on him.
