well said my friend.  Don't get rattled.  These losers are hired because they are good at being nasty to strangers and to plow forward to get whatever information they can get no matter who  they are talking to - your mom, your employer...doesn't matter.  On the bright side, these organizations are employing sociopaths that otherwise would be unemployable and be sucking off the taxpayer's titties.

Just let them do thier thing.  Don't give out information.  Give them fake numbers, talk kindly, say you'll call them back right away but don't, say you are so sorry and really are feeling super burdened, ask them for an account number to deposit the money in, say you will be going to the bank for a loan and please call back in a couple days to see how things went... have some fun with it!  I sure do.  Seriously though... picture sociopaths and friendless misfits trying to make a next paycheque by harrassing you.  Why would you give them what they want?

    Don't let them intimidate you
Relax, they are only using scare tactics.  I don't know what the limitations are for other provinces, but for BC as long as you have no contact with the collections agency they can't come after you once 6 years is up.  But if you contact them or give them any money the 6 year time limit will start from 0 again.  The only thing they can do is garnish your wage, and for a small amount of money it won't happen.  They need to get a court order to do so and will need to apply for it once a month thereafter.  It is very costly for them to go this route so that is why they use threats.  They are hoping to scare you enough that you will pay back the debt.

And even in the small amount of cases that actually result in wage garnishment, they can't take more than 20% or so, and even at that you can apply for it to be a lesser amount stating hardship.  I've heard of people only paying like 20-30 dollars a cheque.  Overall the costs of paperwork / courts are far too high for them to be going this route for a majority of debts.

Do some research.  They are virtually powerless and so try and guilt/scare you into paying.

that's only true in certain provinces, ie ontario. in other provinces it's 6 or 7 years.  and not just from the last payment date, but from the date you last acknowledged the debt.  go to your gov't's website and search "statue of limitation, collection agencies" to find out which applies to your province.

The caller asked for one of our family member's name, my younger daughter answered the phone and asked if the caller would leave a message. He/she said it's from a collection agency and couldn't disclose any detail to anyone. Then he/she tried to get information from my daughter but failed. Finally he/she said it must be someone with the same name from another area code they are looking for and ended the conversation.

These people have been calling me for two weeks, about every third day… it's always went to voice mail and they would leave a message with a "case number" for me to call them back. I never did call them back, as I have good credit to this point in my life. Today, I was free and answered the call… I can tell you 100% this is NOT a legit company. He KEPT asking me for personal information, my birthdate, address, home phone number… when I refused I said that I will physically GO TO MY BANK and if something is wrong, they would know… he got very mad, said that I should just write down the "account number"… and every time I he started telling me what it was I cut him off. I hung up on him, he called right back, he yelled at me and then finally I said I was going to call the police if he called one more time. He told me I can call the police but they won't do anything, and that the calls will not stop.

If this was a legit thing, if I owed money to someone… I would have heard from the Business LONGGGGGG before it ever went to a credit collection agency. Think about that before you give ANY info to these people!
And if it was legit they would NOT be so unprofessional about it!

A little less than 2 years ago, I started getting calls from a number that my caller ID told me was registered to 'PIC'. They left voice mails, sometimes human, sometimes electronic, always fairly polite, but they would make it clear that the matter was urgent. Not being aware of any debts I owed, I ignored the calls at first. When I finally spoke with them after several months, they informed me that I had an outstanding balance from February 2012 on a Toronto Hydro account at an address that I hadn't lived at for almost 4 years. I realized that I made the mistake of not closing the account when I moved out, and my ex-roommate, who had continued living there after I left, had been paying the hydro bill under my name. She must have moved around that time and thus had never received that final hydro bill, and neither of us were there to receive any payment notices that may have been sent. PIC suggested I call Toronto Hydro to sort this out. They confirmed that I did indeed owe them for that one month, at which point I paid Toronto Hydro directly and asked them to make sure the account was closed so nothing like this would happen again. I stopped receiving calls from PIC.
Until a couple of weeks ago, when I started getting calls from a man calling himself Al (his voice mail states his last name is Bores... sp?). He says he is from Partners In Credit and gives me a toll-free number to call (18887306333) and an extension (2514). The toll-free number is the same as is listed on PIC's website, and my caller-ID also indicates PIC, just like last time. After several voice mails where he said we're running on a limited time frame and he wants me to have full understanding of the issue before they "move forward" (never mentioning what they were moving forward with), I picked up the call. He informed me, again, of an outstanding balance with Toronto Hydro from the same address, this time from March 2012 and for a slightly differing amount. I was outraged because I thought I had fixed this problem, and why wouldn't they have told me there were further outstanding payments last time they called? He said he just wanted to help me, and that if a previous payment had been made, he had no current record of it and couldn't access the archives to check. He said the best way to go was to make the payment right away if I could so as to not affect my credit, and get the money back from my ex-roommate. At this point I became suspicious because he told me to put 'Partners In Credit Inc.' as the payee, whereas last time I paid Toronto Hydro directly. Good thing I didn't actually pay them, because when I spoke to Toronto Hydro they said they had received my previous payment a long time ago and there were absolutely no other charges under my name. They did not understand why PIC was calling me, and I told them to relay that information to PIC and make sure I do not receive any further calls. However, I received another one this morning, asking me to confirm my payment to them. I am currently trying to get this guy to send me something in writing so I can expose his scam. He's probably using me to fill some sort of quota and earn some easy cash, picking my file because I was cooperative last time.
