- Meggie replies to MollyNothing WILL happen, but not because he works for the Government, but because it's an offshore call and the U.S. can't enforce U.S. law overseas, for the most part.
- Meggie replies to David"One other thing, does a "real" goernmant agency know about this group?"
Yes, most [or all] of them do. And it isn't "a group." There are multiple perps in many countries around the world following some version of the same script. I've collected lists of phone numbers that probably numbers over a thousand to send with a report to FTC, but I gave up after I got five separate [but likely somewhat overlapping] lists of "202" area code numbers. [Willing to research and spend some time on that, but unpaid time: not to compare lists. But they want the numbers [our Feds] to try to trace.]
I've pinned down India, Nigeria [only a few 'cause THAT government has cracked down and most scammers fled the country], Korea, Viet Nam, Jamaica, Thailand, and Peru with likelihood of China, Canada, and Pakistan as origination points., If it comes in over a "domestic" number, it's spoofed through technology and actually has an overseas origin. Usually. A few may still be domestic, but a lot of those people have been caught, so probably not so much nowadays.
Dept. of Treasury and FBI know about this scam, and probably FTC. Oddly, Interpol only has the e-mail solicitation on its FAQ page so far, not the phone one.
You can file a report with your local police/sheriff's department and request they send a copy to Interpol in D.C.
AT the federal level, file a report with FTC, though if you suspect a connection to an Internet inquiry or transaction as the source of how they got your number, you can file an advisory online with the FBI, also.
Generally, they only allow you to file online not talk to them 'cause they're too busy chasing down these perps. But I got to speak to one FBI agent and one Dept. of Treasury Public Info person, as it happened. And it was the FBI agent who told me 'we're too busy chasing them to talk, as a rule, with the public.'
However, they also use randomization techniques for the phone numbers, so any particular recipient may have done nothing to result in the call. - Meggie replies to HowardYour strategy no longer works. There is a version where they pose as Dept. of Treasury [and a couple of other federal agencies or phony ones that sound like they are] and in THAT version, they actually give you a number to call back as part of the spiel, right off. They tell you that's a call to their "supervisor" or "manager."
Were it not the case that I can trace this version to starting much earlier than the date of your post, I'd almost suggest you gave them the idea.
Problem with this is not just criminals being two steps ahead of law enforcement: they aren't domestic, not subject to our laws. They are using spoofing technologies to hide overseas origins of calls that appear to be domestic. I've done a lot of research: one of the ONLY two groups I've found reported as domestic has been apprehended and brought to justice. [You have to wade through almost 30 pages of Google search to find those two.]
